  1. Dislike. I know Benson's not Bob Gibson 1968, but Julio's too close to Other Bob Gibson 1984 for my tastes. Maine's the dealbreaker, I think. Too early to tell. I popped open real Bob Gibson's b-r.com page before submitting this... look at these World Series stats: 9 games started 8 complete games 81 innings (the one game he didn't complete, in '64, was Game 2; he went eight. He went ten innings for the complete game W in Game 5) 0.889 WHIP 1.89 ERA SICK.
  2. Perhaps we need to bring back smilies after all.

  4. If anyone wants one of the "OFFICAL" 1974s, there's one in an eBay store right now for $40.

  6. The back of Lisa Venafro's neck. Maybe. Wow. We're stretching.

Granted, he should give up less HR at an NL pitcher's park, but that would elevate his numbers up to mediocre, instead of simply awful. 2) Heilman in the rotation: I'll believe it when I see it. Plus, the one-hitter notwithstanding, he was a lot more consistent in the pen. 3) Pelfrey and Iriki: I'll believe those when I see them too. Iriki was serviceable in Japan, which is like being serviceable in Norfolk. Pelfrey hasn't played any professional ball yet. And why is he more of a keeper than Petit or Kazmir? 4) Maine: If only some are noting last year's regression, how do the others justify ignoring it? 4) (yes, he had two 4's) getting younger: Was Heyman critical of Jacobs and Petit for Delgado? Or signing Billy Wagner? I like getting younger when it also means getting better, or at least clearing out older guys who can't help the Mets win anymore. I'm not sure the latter is true for Benson. 5) I don't like Anna either, but she wasn't in the Mets' rotation, her husband was. 6) Julio is arbitration eligible next year too, so it's closer to $10 million. But the Mets aren't strapped right now, and they've made some rather large investments this offseason with the ostensible purpose of winning right now. Perhaps there's another deal forthcoming, but otherwise you're gambling that Heilman over Benson in the rotation gives more than Julio over Heilman takes away in the pen. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes. I don't like this deal right now.
  8. A google search for "mets caravan january 2006" brings me to Anna Benson's site, where she mentions she'll be there, January 23-26. So there you go.
  9. Anyone know when the Mets Winter Caravan is? I was kinda hoping it was today (they're having a baby shower for my wife today, so I'm looking for something to do), but there aren't any indications of it at all on the Mets' site.
  10. If it's anything other than Bob Murphy Stadium, it's a travesty. Hell, whatever it is, I think we'll call it Bob Murphy Stadium anyway.
  11. Yeah! Let's add more middle relievers! Maybe we can have an entire team of middle relievers, and every game, Willie can manage an inning at a time!
  12. Boggs had a clause in his TB contract, I believe. Winfield was a big deal too, but I don't remember if it was some shady deal with the Padres or bitterness over the Howie Spira thing.
  13. It's not that, BS -- it's just that I'm learning not to bite on the rhetoric any longer. It's all good. I still read it for comic value.
  14. We still love ya, BS.
  15. Edgy DC wrote: Google hits for "Duaner Sanchez" + "goofy" = 192 Google hits for "Billy Wagner" + "goofy" = 522 ="Elster88"]Well that's not much in the way of scientific evidence, that's because Wagner is so much more well known. Especially considering the esearch for "Tug McGraw" + "goofy" = only 328 hits. And the chair is named for him.
  16. Edgy DC wrote: Seawolf and Elster might want to consider saving some money by merging operatons. Nah. This is a business, man! My profits from my posts go to me and me alone. Besides, it scares me when Elster and I agree on something.
  17. I can't believe Wilpon is trying to run a business and make -- and save -- money. I'm going to go be a fan of the Boise Potato Fighters, because their owner wants to win. He gives away tickets for free to everyone, and pays his players eighty gazillion dollars every time they sign an autograph for a kid. Gimme a break, folks. Let Steinbrenner pay through the ass for Steinbrenner Field; it's still going to suck.
  18. On what are we basing Sanchez's goofiness? His goggles? Gonna need a lot more than that, folks. I was going to vote "university chair," but since that spot is vacant now, it stays vacant until we know these guys.
  19. Eh, too little too late. I think MLB really screwed the pooch on this one, top to bottom.
  20. Hey, maybe your rotisserie league counts that as a stat. Then that would really matter to you.
  21. I like to think of everything as being a CPF invention.
  22. I just do what KC implores me to do.
  23. I first saw the photo under the headline "No, This Is Not A Picture of Chastity Bono."
  24. No, that's right. He married his mother, Andrea. (Obviously, I'm kidding.)
