  1. Note to self: Become a billionaire so I can get a tax cut.
  2. Yeah, how were his college numbers, anyway? I feel like we should have seen this coming.
  3. Edgy DC wrote: I disagree that it's obviously prompted by religion. I think it's prompted by the organization wanting to be --- or wanting to be seen as being --- good citizens. It is a firm helping of both, but I'd bet it's balanced between the two.
  4. Hand vs Dickey. /giggle
  5. Regardless of when the national anthem started, we already have a patriotic song during the game, and it's silly to have a second one.
  6. Lefty Specialist wrote: I prefer 'America the Beautiful' as it's less overtly religious or militaristic than the others. I don't like patriotism forced on me. One of the bad legacies of 9/11 is that for a while there if you didn't stand at attention for every patriotic song you were viewed as un-American. I do not stand at attention nor do I take off my hat for God Bless America- in fact that's usually my bathroom break. I do stand for the National Anthem, because that's traditional and wasn't grafted on afterwards to prove we can sing louder than the terrorists. Agree wholeheartedly.

Frayed Knot wrote: I think the Yanquis also believe it gives them an added home-field edge (not the players necessarily but the dolts in the front office) both by reminding those poor saps in the non pinstriped unis that they're in a house of royalty and by making their pitcher stand around and wait just when he's getting ready to go. I think there's a decent amount of truth to this. I think it's schmaltz and needs to go. I have nothing against America, or the song, but it's unnecessary.
  8. That's awful. I remember as a kid being fascinated by "team leader" cards, and how you'd have a guy hitting .260 as the "team leader." (This was before I understood minimum PA requirements.) I always thought, "man, that team must have sucked last year if THAT guy led them in hitting." So our team RBI leader for the year is going to be somewhere in the mid-60s. Bleh.
  9. metirish wrote: Parnell throws 100mph plus so he has to be the closer Yeah, that's it, but I still for the life of me just don't understand why no team has been successful using a committee. If two big lefties are coming up in the ninth, then maybe your LOOGY is the guy you want, not your Closer. Meh.
  10. Bah. Added Batista to my all-time Mets card "need" list, and it looks like he doesn't have any certified autographed cards.
  11. Ceetar wrote: Marlins beat guy in front of me is almost done with his game story. The mets eliminated the marlins from the division today Hangin' in the press box?
  12. I think SNY forgot Orlando Hernandez in their trivia question. They said Batista was the third starting pitcher to make his Mets debut after age 40 (Hershiser & Spahn). What about Duque? He had to be 40, no?
  13. No, that was 1999. Mahomes wasn't a Met in 2000, was he?
  14. Rusch! He's the one I forgot. Jones, I think. Wright tattooed that one... off the wall. I know it's old, but boy, it's getting old.
  15. I kinda want to go, but I'm singing at our regular Sunday service that morning as well as at the community interfaith 9/11 service that night.

  17. Let him try it out in Buffalo for a year first, then we'll think about it for 2013.

Here's what I see happening....Ike comes back, running all out, no surgery required and then snap, something goes during the last week of spring training 2012 and surgery is needed after all......yyybbb time wasted. Fixed that for you. That's how we got to see Mike Jacobs for three weeks. remember that? Mike Jacobs never happened. You hear me? NEVER HAPPENED. /strikes out

  20. El Duque retired last week. http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/sports/128036413.html
  21. Ah, Heyman's a dick. He just wants to be able to say this offseason something like "The Mets can't expect too much from David Wright. Every team in baseball had a chance to claim him last year, and nobody did."
  22. Frayed Knot wrote: the sheer volume of players floating out there maybe disguises the handful of guys you really want to slide through. I believe that's been the traditional reason for doing so, yes.
  23. And besides, you gotta have a lot of catchers or you're gonna have a lot of passed balls.
