Well, who are your TWO replacements: Niese and .... ? Figueroa? There are too many bodies in the bullpen now. Two pitchers out, a pitcher and a bat back in makes sense to me. Meanwhile, Murph with some more leather. I can't bear to watch anymore. Oy, the carnage.
  2. I watched sporadically and played board games with the wife after the kids went to bed. But not much to see. I was struck by the eternal optimism of Fboy. When the Braves went up 6-0 after the McCann HR we went into the bathroom, to brush his teeth and get ready for bed. When we came back out he was excited that the Mets had gotten two outs. "They're that much closer to winning now!" is what he told me. Gotta love that.
  3. In my premature curmudgeonness I will admit that I hate everything on TV, new shows, old shows, dramas, comedies, all of it. But, seriously, is there any programming less necessary than the ESPYs?
  4. Tonight's game is later because they are going to retire Maddux's number in a pre-game ceremony.

  6. You can't stop Alex Cora, you can only hope to contain him. (Yes, he sucks. All heart, no bat.)
  7. The perfect 'day after the ASG nothing on' thread! So, which big shot brings the most to the Mets as an organization? Not necessarily the funniest Met lovin big shot, or the hottest, or the most famous, but the best, however you wish to define it. Putting choices up there from that spun off thread, feel free to nominate your own if you don't like those which came up already. Maybe, the question to ask is, which of these big shots would be the best add to the CPF (assuming they're not already here incognito)? Vote and expound please.
  8. ="Edgy DC":1wweomsw]They have developed their own Halladay and his name is Bobby Parnell. Edgy DC Jul 15 2009 10:42 PM Call my bluff and start him. MFS62 Jul 16 2009 08:00 AM I agree with Edgy - let's see what Parnell can do as a starter. Also Halliday, Holliday, Shmaliday, Shmoliday, Joel Sherman put his two cents in intimating Minata hasn't been trying: http://www.nypost.com/seven/07162009/sports/mets/holliday_slumber_shows_omars_failures_179579.htm?&page=0 Later Ashie62 Jul 16 2009 08:11 AM ="Edgy DC":3f7k326p]Call my bluff and start him.[/quote:3f7k326p] Edgy. I was actually joking..Earlier in the year I posted giving Parnell a shot as a starter but the common response was he couldn't bring heat for more than an inning or 2 and he didn't have enough pitches. If the season gets uglier come late August I'm all for starting him for a 5 or 6 start sample. Edgy DC Jul 16 2009 08:26 AM I don't recall that exchange. I understand steering guys with a limited array of pitches toward the pen, but there are plenty of guys who've succeeded as starters with only two pitches. There are plenty more who throw their third or fourth pitch only five times a game. Centerfield Jul 16 2009 09:31 AM If you're a two pitch starter, but pitches are plus pitches. Parnell has a good fastball, ok slider. I see him in middle relief. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Jul 16 2009 10:07 AM Parnell's slider is just okay. Iffy command, middling movement. Also, he didn't throw nearly as hard when starting (91-92 rather than 95-96). Since his slider is 86-87, that would make his speed differential just about 5 mph... meaning that hitters wouldn't have to adjust their timing significantly to hit his "off-speed" stuff. Unless he does some serious workshopping on the slider and/or a third pitch, and that work proves successful, there are significantly better options in Niese and/or Holt for late-season show-me starts.

  13. ="themetfairy":17rucwsm]From The Daily Show - [/quote:17rucwsm] With all apologies to Jerry Seinfeld (who hasn't done much since his TV show ended) and uber-hot Julia Styles, Jon Stewart is America's best Met Lovin' Big Shot. He'd fit in perfectly here. (Merged from Stewart Split, 7/17/2009) Edgy DC Jul 15 2009 12:47 PM Pbbb. G-Fafif Jul 15 2009 02:09 PM Any doubts I may have had about Jon Stewart's Met authenticity (and I didn't really have them) were allayed when Kevin Burkhardt interviewed him at Citi Field and he mentioned what a great home the Brooklyn Dodgers have here, or words to that effect. 14. Still have not seen this -- I don't get to the movies much anymore. But the book covers in depth not only Dillinger, but Nelson, Floyd, the Barker gang, Bonnie and Clyde and Machine Gun Kelly all with great detail and minus the inaccuracies and liberties taken by the filmmakers in the name of dramatic license. I'd recommend the book to anyone -- very enjoyable non-fiction.
