1. yak. me no likey. i'd rather include heilmann than zambrano, imo. granted, i'd rather include nobody for reasons stated elsewhere by posters aplenty.imagine the cries of metfandom if soriano came here for the price of, effectively, scott kazmir and a very promising future pitcher, and then played at shea like he's played on the road this year.sheesh. there'd be a riot. can we get a first baseman instead? i mean, its the position at which we're more sorely in need of an upgrade, isnt it?
2. i was gonna post that. i was waiting for the KTE.re: the article:jeez, bitter much?i guess boras clientship has that affect on people...
3. cammy and soriano also rate 10 win shares apiece for 2005, granted cammy's in with less playing time.
4. soriano also has a lower fielding percentage than kaz matsui! granted, his zone rating is better, while still only midpack.so he's basically a lower-third defensive second baseman. while he would add power to the lineup, he doesnt necessarily help us in any other appreciable way.id much rather we go another route, that lands us either with no significant changes, or a power first baseman, with good OBP ability.
5. ah. i had it in my head that 1.2 * OBP + SLG was it, but i couldnt think of where i'd seen it, or where the correlation is made. anybody quick enough to pull up a link for me to peruse?and i think that while he can be a bit too much of a yankee fanboy at times, and the fact hat he has a very difficult-to-listen-to voice wherin there's just something wrong with it, but i cannot put my finger on it, he is a good listen.that he's not so high on soriano only boosts his relative standing
6. STAND PATstop trading away new, dashing prospects, and teambuild!
7. mlbaseballtalk wrote:For the Mets anyway.Maybe the only NYC media guy not pushing for a variation of a Soriano trade, but Max Kellerman on 1050 ESPN Radio actually says Mike Cameron is a better offensive player, right now, than Alfonso Soriano.Guy is a Sabermetric guy so he used all the splits, new stats and such to evaluate both players and tried to prove that Soriano A) right now is a product of a band box in Arlington and B) wasn't really that great of a postseason "clutch" guy that Yankee Colored Glass wearers want you to thinkI swear it was like I was reading one of the Listserv@aol.com Met list digests (that mailing list is heavy with Sabermetric guys who are anti New York media who of course are anti-Sabermetric) the way he was making his argumentPersonally, not sure if I'd go with Soriano either. More for the distraction in the clubhouse, the fact that he is two years older than he was supposed to be, and that he seems very much like an older version of Carlos Beltran, same type of stats as wellStevesoriano scares me. i can't put my finger on it, and im not sure why, but he scares me. granted, i've heard kellerman make a wildly ludicrous claim, in support of another ludicrous claim, recently, that OPS should be supplanted by O2S (OBP + OBP + SLG) since OBP is twice as important as SLG, and that because of this, jason giambi is one of, if not THE, BEST hitters in the game right now.
8. how much does hte RFK of today differ from teh RFK of old?also, boy, i was just in DC for about 48 hours, and decided to go to a nationals game. if that park don't make shea look like a thing of beauty, i don't know what the hell will.i wonder, also, what the air currents are like in the outfield...edit: also, boy, do those national fans really hate christian guzman! wow! there's real disgust there. they booed him like new yorkers boo roger cedeno!
9. i've given up trying to guess, and have decided to see if i could root out the answers before others actally guessed them.in doing so, i've come to question the answer for Cleveland:Ricky Gutierrez:March 29, 2004: Sent to the New York Mets by the Cleveland Indians as part of a conditional deal.
10. did we trade scott erickson to texas, or did they pick him up after he was released? or did he not go to texas last year after we were through with him, and i'm smoking crack?and on another "i'm not really sure..." didnt we get brady clark from colorado in recent years? (edit: yeah, i really wasn't sure. cincy from above. damn. i suck)
11. how bad must the team be? i mean, we've got cliff floyd as our 5-hitter, and david wright as our 6/7 hitter! that must be a pretty good lineup!i shouldnt mention that floyd has more at bats in the 4-spot than does piazza, nor should i mention that piazza has more at bats in the 5-spots than he does in the 4.nor should i mention that piazza should be knocked down (at least) a spot in the order because of a better option named david wright. so the fact that we do indeed have two better options than piazza for the 4-spot means, what? nothing?
12. so, is piazza a better hitter than cliff floyd and david wright, suddenly? and carlos beltran? holy cats, indeed!how do you reconcile this with your hatred of the fellow?
13. the problem with brian fuentes is... who else on the rockies is worth a darn?their catchers are nothing to speak ofhelton is no better than the 4th best 1B in the leaguetheir 2B's are pitiabletheir 3B is no better than the 7th best in the leagueclint barmes had to go carrying deer meat, otherwise he'd actually be a good candidate at SSand in the outfield, only preston wilson is in the top 10 offensively for the respective position.jeff francis is their only starter with a winning record, at 8-5, but he's got a 4.74 ERA. oddly, he has a 3.18 HOME ERA, and 6.34 on the road. how the hell does he manage that!?and in the pen, you've got brian fuentes, who has 6 holds, 11 saves, and only 2 blown saves and a 2.48 ERA, and jay witasick with 10 holds and 1 blown save and an ERA of 2.60of all teh relievers with at least as many save opportunities as fuentes, only 5 have better ERA's, and he does it in Coors.so that's about as weak a justification for him as i can come up with. and there ya have it. either brian fuentes, jeff francis, or todd helton is your colorado representative this year. boy do they suck.
14. " For Chrissake, they still have Piazza batting 4th because they have no better options when everyone on this forum now can see that Piazza has no business batting sixth on a contending team, much less fourth."i think everyone in the free world would agree that piazza is batting 4th because that's where willie keeps pencilling him in, not because we have no better option.
15. i kinda liked the alternating home/road staves, myself, with each tailored to their specific tasks - namely, take a bunch of pitchers who seem to be effective at altitude, and keep em there. go on the road, and use your sea-level pitchers. and of course, mix things up come extended home or road trip.would it work, prolly not. but itd sure be different.
16. well, i guess its an upgrade over marlon byrd.. but damn, that's an expensive upgrade!
17. well, seeing as he's still a hall of famer, first ballot, and is still the best-hitting catcher in the NL, and therefore seems to meet most people's all-star criteria (seeing as most people dont give enough credit to defense, except, you know, mets fans in relation to mike piazza and rey ordonez), he's still the best candidate for all-star status in the NL.he's no longer a Star player, and he's no longer a feared hitter. but he's still a good-hitting catcher, and when you're the best hitting good-hitting catcher in a league, you tend to find your way onto an all star roster.now, of course, if you wanted to be fair, and select who actually is the best catcher in the league, then you'd have to give brian schneider the nod, as he's basically on a par with piazza offensively based on year-to-date production, and is reportedly one of the better defensive catchers in the league.
18. hardcover came out a year ago, paperback came out in april.http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1400078679/qid=1120827662/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-9890835-6055307?v=glance&s=books
19. zero game is very good. they twist things up right in the beginning even!i think it was my second meltzer book, and it won't be my last.edit:i'm now reading:which while well written is coming along rather slowly. ploddingly i might even suggest. its not so much that the book itself isnt interesting and doesnt draw me in, its just that i've no real current vacation time during which to read, and i'm not riding the bike as much in the gym, so i've little reading time right now. but it is an interesting story of the fledgling new amsterdam, of its chaotic and fitful start, and of its possible influence on the shape of america to come, what with such nicities as religious tolerance and meltingpotness, etc.
20. "mets suck"??damn, where the hell does that come from? and, damn! what a fucking RIPOFF job off the bosox.what next? are they going to have a rally chimpanzee? a washington whacko? a monument park of their own?build yer own damned history, folks. no need to steal somebody else's.
21. ScarletKnight41 wrote:On the local news last night, the DC sports reporter was practically giving an on air blow job to Hernandez. He was also bitching and moaning incessantly about how the Expos (oops, I mean the Nationals) were screwed by only having two all stars named to the team.did we ever kick up an all star thread? i cant seem to find one, but may be too blind...
22. if jete's doesn't make it, do ya suppose they'll hafta change the ads?
23. "(The only classless part was that they IDed Malzone as a shortstop for the Sox in the 50s and 60s--I promptly said "Bullshit, he was a third baseman, a terrific third baseman" to my kid.)"i've just got this feeling that if the mets had done something like that, it would have been considered to be indicaive of some systematic balh blah blah.also, mets let kids and old folk run and walk the bases, respectively (tho i doubt they'd push along a slow kid, or trip up a feisty geezer), and i've gone around the warning track of shea for prolly hte past 4-or-5 years now. and today at shea, they had a gen-u-ine hero out there getting some recognition - a real live WW2 medal of honor recipient, NYC's last surviving, apparently, and teh first pitch was tossed by a former ticketbooth guy turned NY's Finest who stopped a robbery at a dunkin donuts while off duty and got stabbed for his trouble (raising the pair of questions - 1. who would be so stupid as to rob a dunkin donuts? and 2. who knew cops went to dunkin donuts while off duty, too?)i guess it all matters on what day you get there. hope the grass stays greener for you at fenway.
24. "And Tango Makes Three"a touching childrens story about a pair of gay penguins, who build a nest but cannot fill it with an egg, and the kindly zookeeper who helps them in their quest to build a family, introducing shell-bound, and titular, "Tango" to their life. a briskly entertaining read that teaches us understanding and apreciation of alternative aviary lifestyles, and also that "Wasabi" is an awesome name for a penguin.
25. i wish davey was batting 5th or 6th today...
