  1. obviously, part of the consideration process is how much of a letdown there is between the starter's and the replacement's offensive capabilities. in terms of green and chavez, its a bit of a wash, with an argument that chavez is actually a step up offensively! (personally i think that holds true for the short term, but that chavez might get overexposed given a full season, and so is more valuable coming off the bench, and as an occasional starter) other factors worth considering are how soon the starter's spot in the lineup will be coming up and the abilities of your pen - flyball pitcher necessitating better outfield defense? strikeout pitcher? righty/lefty?

  3. but, we like you, cooby.
  4. once the no-hitter is off the books, i'm happy with pulling him there. give him a great start to build off of, rather than yanking him after he starts to tire, and has less of a good feeling going into the next game. especially since the rap on him is that he needs to be better focused (and i think that might tie into confidence a bit), its a good move to build up your young starters in april. besides, willie had said in pregame interviews that he wanted to get burgos into the game, and that he would've preferred it not be too much of a cookie, either, meaning that he would've like there to be pressure on burgos when he pitched. i guess he'd take it the way it worked out as well. but you could tell in the post-game interviews that willie really wanted to get him in there in a live situation, instead of mop-up duty in a blowout, so that he could see what the kid's makeup is
  5. i've given loduca a total of 2.3 points thus far, making him my 6th highest ranked met. am i considered to be under 20? if so, then, um, thanks. can you buy me a beer? (i moved a year ago, and the liquor store i shop at now doesn't card me. it makes me sad. my old liquor store used to card me...)
  6. what i mean is that it seems as if the voters vote for the pitcher on an absolute scale - "how much schaefer is a 7-inning 1-hitter worth? five? ok, i'll give him five" - and from there, they divvy out the remaining points to the relievers/defense/offense, on more of a relativistic scale. never (rarely) does the fact that the offense had a great game take away from the contributions of the starting pitcher, whereas the contributions of the starting pitcher regularly takes away from the contributions of the offense.

  8. so... we're going with a "vote the pitcher, and to the hitters go the scraps" strategy here?
  9. the big hurt has a really shitty staircase railing, doesn't he? it wobbles and shakes with every freakin' step! i mea, he's a big guy, and really lays a big hurtin' on those kids, but, damn, you'd think he could afford better carpentry!
  10. bbbbbbbbbbb-but he sang a song that we sing!
  11. if the discussion is no longer about why (or if it never was...), then i guess it simply comes down to looking it up. not that i'm volunteering...
  12. it is far easier to prevent runs from being scored than it is to try to score them. therefore, the more you can do to assure that you remain in the run prevention business, the better, particularly when you have a narrower lead. if you're in the latter stages of a game, and you have the lead, you are better off playing to ensure that you keep the lead than you are in strategizing what you need to do once you lose said lead. defensive subsitution is the move for a team with a smaller margin of potential victory, as the gains from having a superior defender are more important to your chances of winning that game than they would be with a larger lead.
  13. yup. merely meant to provide actuals to back up the theoretical.
  14. do you care what the score is when a hitter drives in runs? if so, wouldn't you also care what the score is when a pitcher allows runs?

However many games you expect Wright to play, divide by three and there's your number for the difference of ABs between batting #5 and batting #2.league-wide, the difference between plate appearances for a #2 and a #5 is 53. for the mets, it was 60. How ya figure? Every team plays 162, and every lineup slot removed from #1 subtracts 18 Abs, so why would it differ from team to team?sorry. meant to say "in 2006..." i went to ESPN, looked at the team stats for 2006, and clicked on the pulldown menu to filter first for #2 hitters, then for #5 hitters. the league-wide average plate appearances for a #2 hitter was 750, and for a #5 hitter was 697. for the mets, it was 754 and 694, respectively. 750 - 697 = 53 754 - 694 = 60

  17. my super-complicated uber formula almost gave him a 6. actually, about the only way he didnt get it was because there were some sip-worthy players who came in to releive him. there's only 10 points to go around, afterall.

  24. could be... right now, i'm at 130 - 189, pitcher points versus hitter points. mets pitchers have allowed 177 runs, the hitters have scored 144. i think the low scoring is hurting the pitchers in that there are fewer points available for wins, saves, and holds... also, there were a lot of one-inning outings, being that it was spring, making it hard for a relievers to really accrue points. and because of the shortness of the outings, starting pitchers had fewer innings available to them, and virtually no quality starts. meanwhile, position players typically played deeper into games, and therefore had a better chance of piling up marathon points.
  25. y'know, i don't know for sure that i've ever seen the natural in its entirety... and i call myself a baseball fan!
