  1. Jackson is right handed. If Joey Bats goes, they're going to need someone who hits from that side. Hell, they probably could use someone even if he stays.
  2. Reports are that the Mets have signed Austin Jackson to a Major League contract. https://www.sny.tv/mets/news/mets-sign-veteran-outfielder-austin-jackson/287610834 Probably a sign they're planning to move Bautista.
  3. Given the way the team's fortune has been going, frogs, lice, boils and locusts are not out of the question.
  4. Hand, foot, and mouth disease?????? The team has cornered the market for bizarre ways to get on the DL:
  5. It was OK, but not up to the standard Brad Bird has set for himself. In that was, it was like Early Man, where Nick Park did a perfectly good movie, but one that just wasn't up to his best.
  6. The Cyclones were in town last night, playing the Tri-City ValleyCats and I managed to get to the game. Great seats, too -- right behind home plate (you could see the scouts with radar guns watching the action). The Cyclones won it 11-5. Jose Medina had two home runs and Anthony Cirocie was 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Christian James gave up a three-run homer in the first (negating a three-run top of the inning, where the ValleyCats starter couldn't find the plate and was pulled after 2/3rds of a inning), but nothing else. The Mets scored four in the fourth, with Medina's first HR (3 runs) the big hit. I had a great time. It was a perfect night for a game.
  7. The fundamental fallacy behind the "baseball is boring" is the assumption that action is what makes a game interesting. Baseball has never been about action. It's all about suspense. Each pitch raises hope. Will it be a ball? Will it be a strike? If the ball is hit, where is it going? If there are men on base, the suspense is even greater. Too many strikeouts? No one complained when Tom Seaver struck out ten in a row.

  9. smg58 wrote: He's actually under contract for over a million dollars this year. I thought that was a joke, but it won't be if he's reinstated. He is singularly unworthy of a major-league deal at this point. Mejia signed a one-year contract this year. He is not eligible for free agency, so he'd have to be re-signed, and will go into arbitration this winter, probably taking the maximum cut possible. If the team doesn't just release him, of course.
  10. After we trade Cabrera, Familia and Blevins (presumably for prospects and suspects), and Syndy and Vargas get back from DL: DL: sp-Syndegaard sp-Vargas* rp-Ramos c-d'Arnaud Lf-Cespedes Cf-Lagares Rf/1b-Bruce* 2b-Rivera ss-Cecchini 3b-Wright Our DL team is way better than our current roster. You left off Montero. . . .
  11. Cespedes is injured and takes longer than expected to heal: "What a wimp. He's dogging it." Syndergaard is injured and takes longer than expected to heal: "Poor Noah. I hope he gets ready soon."
  12. It definitely falls to the failure of the farm system, especially for position players. Alderson has concentrated on pitchers and has not been going after position players who could make a difference. Conforto and Nimmo are fine ballplayers, but they haven't had the impact that some of the young players on the Yankees have. Rosario is still not ready, and Dom Smith seems to be a flop, especially if Alonso comes along, giving him no place to play. The sell-off last year brought back nothing but middle relievers. Because the team insisted the other team take all the salary, they weren't even top prospects. Alderson should have been looking for position players. This year's free agent signings have been disastrous, but that was due to injuries. No one thought any of the signings were bad ones at the time. Even Gonzalez was considered a smart decision. There's a difference between a move not working out and a move being bad; the decisions were made based upon the best information known at the time. You don't have a crystal ball.* The fact that the farm system hasn't been producing is the bigger issue, and that's all Alderson. *One reason I don't think the Ryan for Fregosi trade was a terrible decision. If you were to ask anyone at the time who had a shot in the Hall of Fame, everyone -- GMs, sportswriters, fans, and even Sabermetricians (if they existed) -- would say it would be Fregosi. But Ryan learned how to use his talent, and Fregosi was hobbled by injuries.
  13. The team's worst month in 1962: April. 3-13 .188 The Mets in June 2018: 4-17 .190 The Mets need one victory this week to (barely) beat that record.
  14. So how will Drew Smith be billed on the back of his uniform? "Smith" is already taken and "DSmith" creates confusion. "Drew"? "Drew Smith?" "The Guy WE Got for Duda"?
  15. Connors is fondly regarded around Schenectady. He grew up here and was part of the 1954 Little League World Championship team.
  16. “With Brandon Nimmo in right field, we just didn’t feel we had a need there,” Alderson said at the Winter Meetings. Maybe he wasn't joking.
  17. Edgy MD wrote: And since the Mets have his UCL and his rib, they can clone him if necessary. Yeah, but if you clone him from a rib, you get a woman. There is precedent.
  18. The rationale of getting Plawecki and Mesoraco in the lineup is reasonable, but not at the expense of kissing Conlon goodbye. There was no way he was going to get DFAed and still stay a Met.
  19. Things are not starting out well.
  20. Must be figuring that since Lobaton wasn't claimed the last time he was DFA'd, he won't be claimed this time, either.
  21. Do you think one reason they're holding on to Reyes is hoping the Wright comes back so they can play together again?
  22. smg58 wrote: Our new call-up. Don't know that much about him (is he even on the 40, and if not, who get's the boot?), He's not on the 40, but the obvious answer is to move Lagares to the 60-day.
  23. I was surprised at first they were bringing up Nido; he's not major league ready. But I suspect they're DFAing Lobaton to clear room on the roster. They'll need another outfielder if Lagares is out. Though why they don't just put Lagares of the 60-day DL is hard to figure.
  24. Not a big fan of either, but I prefer the more dynamic drawing in 1976. I actually have that yearbook, even though I never got close to Shea Stadium that year. I think that was when I hosted a sports call-in show.
