  1. So you take an 83-win team, subtract Nimmo, Diaz, Alonso and McNeil, add Williams, Polanco and Semien, and expect to compete for a playoff spot? Um, no. Missing 2/3 of an outfield, at least one rotation arm and half a bullpen. Plus too many infielders, even after banishing the Squirrel. Just don't see how any of this works.
  2. The Mets certainly have the salary room to make additions. But the fact that they haven't signed anyone big seems to play into Stearns' aversion to long-term deals. They seem to be waiting like they waited for Alonso last year, hoping the market will come to them. I don't think that's going to happen. Could be a game of musical chairs where they're the ones left standing. Yeah, if 19 things all happen, they'll win 95 games. If they don't, or if only a few happen, they're a sub-.500 team.
  3. Sounds like a younger version of Tomas Nido.
  4. I like the Weaver signing. Firms up the bullpen a bit, and in typical Stearns fashion, it's not a long-yerm deal.
  5. Padres have leverage, too. Stearns has pretty much whiffed this off-season and the pressure is on him to do something big. Uncle Steve's looking over his shoulder. I would really hate to lose Tong- I think he's going to be something special with a little seasoning.
  6. Another confusing move from Stearns.
  7. That's a Jeff Wilpon plan. I've already seen that movie and know how it ends.
  8. Nothing less than a WS title, because then he will have been right and we will have been wrong. Currently, this is a 75-win team.
  9. Made it! I'm in New Zealand cuŕrenty, so I have to turn the phone upside down to read things. Otherwise, no worries.
  10. Glad we're not talking about Ty Subtractcock.
  11. Came to this late, but I will gladly pay whatever it takes to keep this place alive. I have Venmo, and I'm not afraid to use it.
  12. Don't agree at all. What doomed the Mets in 1987 wasn't a lack of Ray Knight. It was Doc Gooden being found in a crack den. What doomed the Mets in 2025 wasn't a lack of Jose Iglesias. It was the slow, painful collapse of the pitching staff. Neither of these things could have been fixed by having a 'good clubhouse guy'. In fact you could make the case that the Mets won in '86 because they DIDN'T rely on a good clubhouse guy. They were a bunch of *******s. *******s who won, but *******s nonetheless.
  13. Yes, parking will be a nightmare. But I've been taking the 7 line most of the time anyway.
  14. Yeah, that's where I am. I like Williams as the 8th inning guy, not the 9th inning guy.
  15. I'll miss him. He wasn't the greatest ever, but he was solid enough. Had his moments as noted above, and he always felt genuine to me. He ran to first on every walk, even when his foot hurt. Was a Christian but wasn't in your face about it. Always smiled like he meant it, too. You got the feeling that he felt lucky to play a kid's game for big money. Yeah, his contract will age badly, but so will Semien's. I hope he has an awesome year for the Rangers.
  16. So at least Mauricio has one more option so you can stash him in Syracuse. Acuna's out of options, and frankly hasn't shown anything offensively, so he's probably a toss-in as part of a bigger trade. Then you've got Baty and Vientos. Who plays third? Baty's still unproven, but he's a better defender. Does Vientos slide over to first if Alonso doesn't sign? You won't get value for Vientos coming off a bad year. Maybe they can trade for a third baseman to make things even more complicated.
  17. I dunno. You've already got 4 people who can play second (McNeil, Baty, Acuna, Mauricio) so you get ANOTHER one? One who's 35 and hit .230 last year? What am I missing here? If there's one person who doesn't need to do a salary dump trade, it's Uncle Steve. Unless this is part of a bigger bunch of moves on the chess board, this seems like a dumb deal.
  18. Whew. Lefty Specialist Dec 02 2024 06:14 AM Re: Frankie Montas: Signed Hope Stearns knows something we don't, because on the surface this is a questionable move. Montas isn't that good.
  19. Considering that they have virtually no bullpen at the current time, signing Diaz is doubly important. You can fill in the other roles once you have a closer. It's much harder to do the other way around.
  20. I went with a 4 as well. Of course, things are better than the Wilpon days. I'd like to think that the money spent behind the scenes will pay off with better outcomes as the pipeline improves. Stearns hasn't produced a 'complete' team in his first two tries. Things are a little top-heavy money and talent-wise, but there are too many gaps, and trying to fill those gaps at the deadline last year blew up in his face (Cedric Mullins et al). They need to figure out what to do with 4 people for the 2b/3b positions. They need to find a real CF who can cover the position and hit at least a little bit. They need a real bullpen. And they need to decide what the starting rotation is going to look like. Plus, they need to resolve the Alonso/Diaz situation. That's an awful lot. Unlimited money is certainly nice. But they've yet to prove that they can make the best use of it. They need to do better than 83 win seasons with the kind of resources they have. I know they'll be competeitive every year, so that gets them a 4. But it's a huge gap between a 4 and a 5.
  21. Being able to bet on the outcome of a pitch is just an open invitation to this sort of thing.
  22. Just burp him a few times and he'll be fine.
  23. I like Bellinger's flexibility. He's cut down on the strikeouts, too, in recent years. You can sign him and still go after Pete.
