If You Had The Power to Reorganize Baseball
dgwphotography replied to Valadius's topic in New York Mets Talk
1. eliminate inter league play 2. eliminate the DH. 3. institute a world-wide draft - I'm tired of this free-agency free for all where the best foreign players only go to a handful of teams. 4. add a review system for umpires with real teeth in it - Umpires with a failing review get sent down to the minors or outright fired. 5. Fire Angel Hernandez outright. -

You're Entering A World of Pain (2009 Injuries)
dgwphotography replied to a topic in New York Mets Talk
From Adam Rubin's blog: Johan Santana and Oliver Perez will undergo their surgeries Tuesday. I can see them operating on Santana's knee, and Perez' elbow.... -
yeah - I'm a spaz - I woke up from a nap, and I thought it was today's game... Mets up 2-1... Nice to see a smiling David Wright in the dugout...

I'm watching this, and this is sad - Soriano gives the Mets a 2-1 lead in the 8th with a couple of poorly played balls in the outfield, and then he taketh away with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 8th - 5-2 Cubs...

You're Entering A World of Pain (2009 Injuries)
dgwphotography replied to a topic in New York Mets Talk
It wasn't until about two weeks ago that I realized that there would be no miracle comeback, so I don't blame Santana at all for pitching as long as he did with this. -
The only one on that list I would want is Bay. Perhaps this is a good year to tighten the purse strings, because no one else on that list is worth overpaying for, which is what will eventually happen...

I realize that he started off on fire this season, but didn't Santana "tweak" the elbow in spring training, because he was trying to get ready faster for the WBC? -

Sheffield wants out? (split from 8/20 IGT)
dgwphotography replied to Benjamin Grimm's topic in New York Mets Talk
It was reported last night that it was the Marlins who claimed him, and that Sheffield would have been happy to go back, but the Mets couldn't agree on a deal. http://njmg.typepad.com/metsblog/2009/08/the-sheffield-saga.html Now Tim smith chimes in on the Mets holding Sheffield "hostage" - WTF? http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2009/08/21/2009-08-21_gary_sheffields_.html -

Bases loaded, a pop up to a vet player at third and infield fly rule is called and he catches it. Batter is automatically out, of course. Has anyone ever seen someone let it drop, fake boot it, or something else to see if he could get some young player off base enough to get another out or get some of the guys on base running or thinking about running out of not knowing the rules to heart? metsguyinmichigan Aug 18 2009 07:22 PM Hang on, guys!!!!! Frayed Knot Aug 18 2009 07:23 PM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Aug 18 2009 07:44 PM I did it in a softball game (and, yes, it worked). Frayed Knot Aug 18 2009 07:38 PM ="Kong76":121v2d6d]Frayed Knot, wily vet.[/quote:121v2d6d] The other one we used to do was watch when a batter didn't run following a pop up with only runner on 1st. Then we'd intentionally let the ball drop and get the DP while the batter was walking back to the bench assuming he was going to be out on the catch. Man did that piss people off! They'd be so embarrassed they'd try to claim it was illegal but a smart ump wasn't buying it. Nymr83 Aug 18 2009 07:42 PM no the best is when someone doesnt run out a grounder because htey think they're out... then you ROLL the ball to 1st base for the force. Church didn't get much of a hand or anything, although that partly may have been due to Diaz having just hit a 3 run bomb. Frayed Knot Aug 10 2009 07:59 AM But can't you just picture Johnny F trying to cultivate at least the beginnings of one in Jr High? The Reds - despite the mascot - were long a conservative club with 'no facial hair' restrictions going back even before the Schott era. I suspect he wasn't clean-shaven there out of choice. Edgy DC Aug 10 2009 08:10 AM And, in fairness to the Reds, all of baseball was pretty much facial-hair-free for about 50 years leading up to the Swinging A's era. [/quote:8wq591f4] Reds just kept that policy going much longer than other clubs. It was some mgr/exec from the Cincy org that switched over to StL at one point during Keith's time there who made him shave off his 'stache. Edgy DC Aug 10 2009 08:44 AM And to be honest, I kind of liked the policy. Yeah, it seems starkly retrograde, but I like anything that makes teams culturally different from one another, even if it's something I wouldn't like on my team. Maybe especially if it's something I wouldn't like on my team. dgwphotography Aug 10 2009 01:29 PM I remember seeing both Kranepool and Harrelson sporting mustaches... Farmer Ted Aug 11 2009 09:25 AM Bobby O last night said that Pelfry's form on a bunch of pitches looked lazy and he wasn't waiting for Santos to finish giving signs before he started his windup. In Pelfry's defense, the guy was just with his wife who gave birth. So, he's up for how long during that process? Then the Mets shove him onto a plan, across the freaking country, and pitch with his head obviously in a fog. Farmer Ted Aug 16 2009 01:08 PM Switched over to NESN in between innings to catch a Red Sox score. Frank Viola doing color and sounds pretty good. Any openings at SNY? It did sound nasty... The last 20 minutes just cemented a thought I've had for a while - I would tune in to listen to Gary and Ron (and Keith) just shoot the breeze about baseball even if there wasn't a game on. It's the fact that as good as Ron is, Gary is just one of us. I loved the story he told about keeping score until the 25th inning as Hank Webb threw a pick-off throw away, and Bake McBride scored from first....

As Chuck said, Dallas Green set the team back years...
