  1. Please don't sneeze at a 10-point opportunity. Thanks for answering the 1986 question. There were, in fact, more than five brothers of 1986 Mets who were drafted and played pro ball.
  2. If Hubie Brooks can outpace the field far enough to win a Silver Sluggerino in a half season of play, so can Jacob deGrom. If any human being can achieve any outcome, so can Jacob deGrom.
  3. Favorite things about the Astros (No particular Order): Rainbow unis. Numbers on thigh on rainbow unis. Bagwell's taking-a-poop-in-the-woods stance. Beltran's catch on Tal's hill. Trying to find a way to win in the Dome. Four different looks from Ryan, Niekro, Knepper, and Richard on one staff. Bill Doran always getting MVP support despite no standout numbers. Beating them in 1986. Favorite things about the Braves (No particular Order): Aaron. The Aaron-era unis with the sleeves not matching the chestplate. In 1981, they had Phil Niekro AND Gaylord Perry — the two greatest junk throwers in history, both 42 years old. Dale Murphy's mole. Glenn Hubbard's beard. For decades, their shortstop always seemed to be name Rafael. Every hitter on their team this year seemed to be an MVP candidate, having the year of his life, and if any of them weren't hot when the Braves and Mets locked up, they were hot by the end of the series. A few years ago, in the Kimbrell era, that was what their bullpen looked like, too. Bob Horner's ass. His white hair and his big ass. Their turnaround from 1990 to 1991. I appreciated them not only hiring Torre in 1982, but hiring most of his Mets staff, which was, to some extent, still Gil Hodges' staff. The marathon Independence Day game. Beating them in 1969. I'm a Mets fan, so the list of things I don't like about them is certainly longer. I think I'm going to pick the tomahawk choppers over the garbage can bangers. I just see Senator Cruz and President Trump wrapping themselves in an Astros victory and I can't abide that. I'm putting Houston fans in the MOST LIKELY TO START A FUCK JOE BIDEN! CHANT category. If I'm wrong about that, and Braves fans start with that shit, I will switch allegiance in one second. If both fan bases do it, well, you'll have yourself an embarrassing problem, Commissioner Manfred, and America.
  4. =Marshmallowmilkshake post_id=80190 time=1635196924 user_id=119] Out of the basement! Your bonus question: How many players drafted in the first round by the Mets retired without ever playing for them? Making some assumptions here, I'm guessing you are saying guys who went to the minors but didn't get to the majors with the Mets, as opposed to guys like Kumar Rocker, who didn't play at all in the Mets system --which would be a trick question. So, in 56 years, knowing most of these guys with the Mets don't make it, I'm guessing 30 of the 56.
  5. I'm not on a National League-or-bust thing, but I'm OK with it. If you get knocked out in the first round of a tournament, there's a satisfaction in seeing the team you lost to win it all. That allows you to kid yourself that, hey, you were theoretically better than most or all of the field, and it took the best to take you out.
  6. I wouldn't worry about that. If they are able to recognize the right guy, there are hundreds of right guys out there. I think a greater concern is the effect the front office job search might have on delaying the Mets in the player market, which is a much more finite field.
  7. Nope. Nor Al Shirley, Bart Shirley, Shirley Jackson, Goose Gozzo, Goose Goslin, Goose Tatum, or Geese Ausbie. Questions on the board for Frayed Knot, Chad ochoseis, ashie62, and Marshmallowmilkshake.
  8. Not Goose Gossage. Not Rich Gossage either!
  9. The judges turned in a few more scorecards while we wait to see if the Knot is still participating. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Nimmo We've got to at least get our Sandy Alderson #1's all on the board and Brandon was Sandy's #1 #1! Three points for you! This pulls you away from the field and toward the leaders, giving you some breathing room in sole possession of third! Your bonus question: Who ended George Brett's 30-game hitting streak in 1980? Chad ochoseis wrote: Zack Wheeler A giant of a pick by a giant of an organization, Zack's trade to the Mets allowed Carlos Beltran to go west and do what he does, going a Beltranian .323 / .369 / .551 // .920 down the stretch for the 2011 Giants, who somehow missed the playoffs anyhow. But your post is about Zack Wheeler, and Zack's status as a San Francisco first rounder has earned you five points and pulled you within seven points of the lead!! Your bonus question: Which first round, before 2017, produced the lowest average career bWAR among all draftees? Philip Humber Ashcroft gets on the board with Humbelina, who threw one complete game in his whole career and it was a perfecto! Your bonus question: Which team, besides the Mets, drafted and signed the most future Mets in the first round? My next guess: Tom Veryzer! Veryzer well done! The Detroit Tigers made Tom the #11 overall pick in 1971, and hat's five points for you and 37 years after his last game (and seven years after his early death), TV is still helping win games, garnering five points for you and boosting you out of the cellar into seventh place, where all the cool kids hang out. Your bonus question: How many players drafted in the first round by the Mets retired without ever playing for them? Scoring Lefty Specialist: 31 Chad Ochoseis:: 24 Ben Grimm:: 16 Frayed Knot:: 13 Seawolf:: 12 Gwreck:: 11 Marshmallow Milkshake:: 8 Johnny Lunchbucket:: 6 ashie: 3 (Click a section of the chart below to see a larger version of that portion of the chart.) 10. Longtime occupant of my short list. Or my http://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=30792&hilit=oquendo#p78984medium-length list, at least. I tend to think he suffers from Willie Randolph Syndrome. When a guy has got buzz for a few years, but doesn't get hired, he tends to fall off everybody's list, because folks broadly think that, if he had a bunch of interviews back in 20??, and didn't get hired, why should I waste my time? Thus, the buzz that is initially working for him ends up turning around and working against him. Ultimately, didn't stop the Mets from hiring Willie, of course, but still, momentum is a thing.
  11. Lolich came out of retirement after a year to pitch relief for Roger Craig's San Diego Padres. Craig apparently wasn't Craig yet, because Lolich might have been an early version of one of Craig's veteran reclamation projects. Retirement was a big decision, because he had potential HoF status within reach. One more big year or two or three solid ones and who knows?
  12. Hard to argue with the success he's had. I'm not sure if people look at the Giants organization as a distinct model, but maybe they should be trying to.
  13. Documentary chronicles the head-scratching career of the enigmatic band Sparks, following Ron and Russell Mael from their Beach Boys-esque SoCal childhood onto UCLA film school (somehow not running into Morrison and company) and into a fascinating-but-hard-to-access goofy art rock act, that somehow becomes (a) briefly a teeny-bop British sensation, and later ( the missing link between nu wave cinema and nu wave music, no matter what David Byrne might say. 14. We have two bonus questions still on the board, both for the same competitor. For Frayed Knot: How many siblings of 1986 Mets were drafted by an MLB team? For Frayed Knot: Which Mets first-round draft choice (not necessarily a Met) was the first such draftee to receive a bonus valued at over a million dollars in 2021 figures?
  15. This is fantastic. So much cheesy production. So much videotape-quality video. So much bad synthetic music. So much gay subtext. So much gay supertext.
  16. "Yeah, maybe one of the fans can play second."
  17. George W. was the one who was Rangers co-owner and managing partner in the 1990s. George H.W. is dead at the present time..
  18. Chad shows some good spirit and mindfulness, But 1994 is a later date than we are looking for, and Edith Wilson is a later first lady than we seek. Edith Wilson was an educated and distinguished woman, an alum of Martha Washington College, appropriately enough, but she wasn't even Wilson's first educated first lady. Woody's first wife Ellen graduated secondary school and even went on to co-ed study at The Art Students League of New York. Sorry if clarity was lacking, but by "formally educated," we speak of attendance at institutions of primary and/or secondary education — not necessarily university-level l'arnin'.
  19. It's sort of useful that one organization willingly plays the heel, (a) showing that the other organizations stepping up isn't without risk, and ( raising the profile of the whole effort, which might otherwise come across as a little begrudged, landing in MLB's post-season when little more commitment than a tweet is required, rather than a live statement in front of a crowd on television.
  20. Chad ochoseis wrote: While we're waiting, one more hotshot catching prospect that we got in return for a popular pitcher - Travis d'Arnaud. I skipped this answer earlier, and I shouldn't have, because it's GOOD FOR FIVE POINTS AND SECOND PLACE! Another bonus question for Chad: Which year's draft featured three consecutive first rounders who ultimately got to be Mets? Benjamin Grimm wrote: Randy Myers This answer provided endless handwringing back at headquarters, as we reviewed rule number three. 3. Not included will be first-rounders from the old January supplemental draft or other supplemental amateur drafts that have existed or not existed over that period. Junebugs only. Randall K. was a number-one pick in the now-extinct June secondary phase back in 1982, reserved for a constricted pool of players who had already been drafted but were not signed. This was indeed a supplemental draft under Rule 3 above, so we cannot allow this as a correct answer. This draft did, however occur in June, and we can understand how the final sentence under Rule 3 might be taken as conflicting information. There will therefore be no section of one point from Ben's score. Going forward, however, be forewarned. Supplemental and secondary phases dinna count, even if they are in June. Frayed Knot wrote: Ike Davis No such handwringing was necessary in scoring this one. Ike was the Mets' top draft pick in 2008, and his name gives you three points! This pulls you into a tie for third, as four players jockey with only two points separating them! Your bonus question Is good ol' #41: Which Mets first-round draft choice (not necessarily a Met) was the first such draftee to receive a bonus valued at over a million dollars in 2021 figures? We're looking for a guy who didn't necessarily get a million dollars at the time, but after adjusting for inflation and cost of living, it's 2021 equivalent would totally be over a million dollars. Mets! Economics! Math! Good luck! Chad ochoseis wrote: Big Pelf Ocho is so ON in this quiz that he gives zero shits about names and goes right for the nicknames! We should give him a nickname-based trivia question! Anyhow, he's right for three points, breaking further away from that third-place pack! Your bonus question: Who was the first US first lady with a formal education? (Click a section of the chart below to see a larger version of that portion of the chart.) Here's the scoreboard: Scoring Lefty Specialist: 31 Chad Ochoseis: 19 Ben Grimm: 13 Frayed Knot: 13 Seawolf: 12 Gwreck: 11 Johnny Lunchbucket: 6 Marshmallow Milkshake: 3 And here's something like the history of first-round draft choices on your team: [NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.01-4.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.01-4.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink][NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.07-2.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.07-2.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink][NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.13-2.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.13-2.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink] [NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.02-2.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.02-2.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink][NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.08-1.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.08-1.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink][NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.14-1.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.14-1.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink] [NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.03.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.03.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink][NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.09.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.09.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink][NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.15.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.15.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink] [NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.04.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.04.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink][NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.10.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.10.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink][NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.16.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.16.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink] [NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.05.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.05.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink][NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.11.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.11.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink][NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.17.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.17.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink] [NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.06.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.06.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink][NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.12.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.12.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink][NewWindowLink=https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.18.png][FIMG=300]https://metsinpeace.files.wordpress.com/2021/10/chart.08.18.png[/FIMG][/NewWindowLink]
  21. As for Conforto, I wouldn't be shocked. As for Baez, I agree. I didn't mean to suggest that he should get anything like Lindor's deal. I don't think Lindor should get Lindor's deal.
  22. Kunze Rocker Clusterfuck sounds like a buzzy new band on the cover of Hot Press.
  23. I think a qualified offer being tendered to and accepted by Conforto is probably as close to a certainty as there might be. It makes more than a little sense for both sides. Makes a lot of sense for the Syndergaard scenario to play out that way as well.
  24. Nope, the class of first-rounders that had the lowest average career bWAR came earlier than 1987.
