So here's how we're doing the bonus questions: We have fifty. We spin the wheel and whatever comes up, comes up. As folks answer any questions correctly, I've been adding new onez to keep the number at fifty. Part of the idea is to return to some of the more enigmatic questions so incorrect answers can lead to correct ones. So, yeah, it's probably not a good idea to look up a question a colleague missed when we may get that ourselves question later. Good on Chad for passing honorably. Chad's new bonus question: Most first rounders in recent years still have most of their futures ahead of them, but some classes are never going to pan out. Which first round, before 2017, produced the lowest average bWAR among all draftees? As far as the Rookie of the Year question, I'm sorry, but the answer we're looking for is more than nine!

Well, with this offseason market not having unfolded at all, yet, the starting point would have to be the Lindor deal.
-
Or, if it's boondoggle, it's one more thing to worry about and address.

Chad ochoseis wrote: John Stearns The second overall pick taken in the 1973 draft, courtesy of the Phillies. It took 17 rounds for him to go in the stupid, stupid NFL draft. This is five points for you, moving you squarely into fourth place!!! We spin the wheel of 50 bonus questions, and … amazingly, you get another repeat question! What city has the largest Francophone metropolitan area? Frayed Knot wrote: Royce Ring Royce Ring is currently a Mets pitching coach and was once the return on a trade by the Mets of Hall-of-Fame second baseman (and currently mysteriously banished from MLB employment) Roberto Alomar. He was also a #18 overall pick by the White Sox, and that means five points for you!! This deposes Chad ochoseis from his brief reign as fourth-place holder, and it earns you an exciting bonus question! Your bonus question: How many siblings of 1986 Mets were drafted by an MLB team? Kris Benson. You know how to pick ‘em. You get five, rather than three, points for naming a Met first-rounder selected by another organization, and you get an extra three points for naming a #1 overall pick. Eight points! That's enough to bounce you into fourth place (our third change in that position in a row!), and you can get even more if you correctly answer a bonus question! Your bonus question: What date marked the first appearance of a first-round draft pick in a Mets uniform? (I'm pretty sure that's come up before, but hey, answer it correctly, and you'll never have to see again!) Chad ochoseis wrote: Supplemental picks that teams are given at the end of the first round are variously described as first-rounders, 1a picks, or sandwich-round picks. For the purposes of this quiz, we will treat these as legit first-rounders. Just noticed this rule. Cap'n David Wright. Chad, depressed about falling out of fourth, is not ashamed to take a big ol' bite o' some low-hanging fruit. That three-point EXPLOSION not only knocks you back into a tie for fourth, but really gets things jammed up in the pack behind leader Lefty Specialist, with five players sitting within three points of each other. But you, Chad, you don't want not three points. You're here for the bonus money! Your bonus question: How many Mets were MLB Rookie of the Year winners, no matter which team they were with when they won it? (Another returning question? Another returning question!) Let's see that scoring! Scoring Lefty Specialist: 31 Ben Grimm:: 13 Seawolf:: 12 Chad Ochoseis:: 11 Gwreck:: 11 Frayed Knot:: 10 Johnny Lunchbucket:: 6 Marshmallow Milkshake:: 3 And let's see what we have so far? What this buzz does is underscore how much the are up against the wall in trying not to put the cart before the horse, to mix a metaphor into an unsightly scene. This window of exclusivity is an opportunity and an asset you hate to just let slip away, but how do you make yet another commitment for $300 million + that locks the direction of the team more firmly in place before hiring the person that is supposed to steward that direction? It's not only unfair, but it's kind of unfair in a way that may turn off potential hires. It's just kind of reckless. On the other hand, how long can you operate on automation, performing only the most perfunctory of player transactions, while you have to hire a president of baseball operations, a general manager (presumably), an assistant general manager (less presumably, but still) and a field manager? They also need to assemble the lion's share of the coaching staff. Obviously, a team has to step on the gas with player decisions before all of that can be done, but they have to wait until at least some of that is done, and, unfortunately, wait until the post-season is over to really do most of it with the required formality. It's a real delicate balance. It's a delicate balance in being up up against the wall in trying not to put the cart before the horse.

Man, that near-sweep of Pitcher of the Month Awards by deGrom is incredible. Syndergaard was a hair better in September, if I remember, but only because he stepped it up. deGrom was just as good at the end of the season as he had been all summer.

Should we be talking about ... Jeff Luhnow?

Brett Baty reached in eight straight trips to the plate and is rocking a .444 / .565 / .722 // 1.287 through 23 plate appearances. Carlos Cortes (1.007 OPS), Wilmer Reyes (.862) and Hayden Senger (.708) are also off to strong starts. Bryant, Grey, Holderman, and METoyer have combined for a 2.25 ERA through their first five innings, striking out seven and walking four. Their team, The Glendale Rafters, are in first place at 4-1, and Baty is pretty much the league's MVP so far.

He made it as far as AAA while rarely seeing much PT (topped out at 272 plate appearances in 2017) and rarely hitting when he did. I'm going to guess he played the game the right way and will be heading into coaching — possibly rejoining the organization to coach all the guys passing him on the organizational depth chart.

Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: I'm strong behind the Braves in this series. They did what they needed to do, all year. They sent Minter to the minors to get his shit together in July, made the right trades when Ozuna and Acuna went down, they're all about Guillermo Heredia and d'Arnaud They really performed well, and the best hitter in their lineup this season has typically been whoever was coming up to bat. But I can root for the Braves right up until the first tomahawk thingie. Good God, retire that garbage.

Baseball Things You Didn't Know Until 2021 (or, at least, I didn't)
Edgy MD replied to Edgy MD's topic in New York Mets Talk
George Foster and Dave Kingman played in the same Little League. Lenny Dyksta grew up in a Brady Bunch-type family — a joined family produced by his mom bringing three boys to a marriage with a guy who already had three girls. -
That's certainly the idea. At least, it was with the last three GMs they hired.

Sorry! Spent the day on the road, and cleaning out my Mom's old place. Chad ochoseis wrote: Edgy MD wrote: Your Bonus Question: What city has the largest Francophone metropolitan area? You are effing with me. You are so effing with me. You want me to say Montreal, right? But I'm almost certain it isn't Montreal. 4 million in the Montreal area, and I think Paris is larger than that. But I don't think it's Paris, either. Dakar, Senegal. I like your logic and commitment to the question, but not quite. Dakar has the sixth-largest Francophone metro area. I'm glad to see you alive and well. Lefty Specialist wrote: Edgy MD wrote: Your Lefty Specialist Bonus Question: Who Is the earliest MLB first-round draft pick that is still active (or at least was at the end of the 2021 season)? Well, that's bad information. Robinson Canó and Miguel Castro have lost their faces also.

Lindy is signed through 2031. No options. No exit clauses. The guy is loaded. He got $21 million up front in a bonus, and $50 million deferred. This matters because bonuses and post-contract deferments get taxed in the state in which you live, and like seemingly every ballplayer he lives in Florida, where income tax isn't a thing. He's got four major sponsors and I think he's one of only three MLB players with a signature shoe. It's been a big year for breakthrough supastars, though, so that may have changed of late.

Please consider being discreet with regard to answering each other's bonus questions out loud. That could work against your interests, or the interests of an innocent third party. Still sitting on three Lefty Spec bonus questions. I'll jump ahead to a few more answers meantime. Lefty Specialist wrote: Michael Conforto... This is correct for three points! It strikes me that this question may well have a different answer before this kwiz is komplete.

Good call above by Coo. Meanwhile, AAA pitcher Trey Cobb is just barely hanging on after a mostly disastrous 2021, but the first line in his Twitter bio is "Follow the wifey," so he's OK by me. https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/1329969816048971776/X4RTpef0_400x400.jpg> Kaci Cobb is her name and they are parents to young twinz.
