  1. Noah Syndergaard's apparent contract with Anaheim not only brings to a close his Met tenure, but ends his term of service under the rights the Mets acquired for him when the dealt R.A. Dickey to the Blue Jays. This is the last such potato from the blockbuster trade to finish his term of service, making it as good a time as any to review the trade. fWAR isn't everything. It's not the bottom line, but it tries hard to be. There are certain things it measures and certain things it does not, but treating it like a bottom line here, it's hard to argue that the trade was anything but a windfall for the Mets, judging by fWAR or fWAR/$$. I don't recall if the trade only was complete after R.A. Dickey agreed to a two-year extension, but I'm considering those two years plus the option year as part of Toronto's acquisition. It doesn't make much of a difference. R.A. Dickey did a great job holding down a spot for the Blue Jays, but his All Star form was gone. It can certainly be argued that none of the four acquisitions for the Mets was particularly close to a best-case outcome, but it nonetheless comes off as a Mets win coming and going. His pay for those two months is also included. Another way of measuring this could include half (or some fraction) of the Dilson Herrera and Vic Black ledgers, acquired for Buck and Marlon Byrd, but it's hardly necessary to get too granular over that, as the result would still show a lopsided Mets win.
  2. I wonder if Syndergaard and Bauer will share an apartment.
  3. If research on first-rounders has taught me anything, it's that the odds of anybody becoming an impact player/All Star are against you. You're not paying for wins, but for the likelihood of wins. But that's the nature of speculation. A thing doesn't have to be guaranteed to produce to have value. It only has to be a little bit more likely to produce over the long haul than another thing. But, you know, Syndergaard hasn't been a big producer the last few years.
  4. He looks a lot like Matt Lauer in that profile shot — which, I guess, doesn't fit particularly well into the don't-hire-a-sexual-miscreant agenda.
  5. Scoscia and Eppy were widely reported to have clashed in a power struggle back in Anaheim, so I don't think he'll be bringing Sco in. A one-year manager, Tyler Skaggs, Matt Harvey — that was a tough sunset to Eppler's reign in Anaheim.
  6. Lefty Specialist wrote: Many moves are needed. And all without a GM. Ya know, for less than a $3 million difference, Thor could have stayed and built his value here. This kind of reinforces that the Mets are not a destination people want to go to. It also ups the ante for spending this offseason. I wouln't make much of that. Re-signing with the Mets wouldn't have made them a destination so much as a continuation at the same stop. Familiarity equals contempt, but it's more like $3 million = $3 million. The guy may never sign another contract and I'm sure he's been told that. Gotta gets that money while the money is good.
  7. Bob Alpacadaca wrote: Did the Mets even get a chance to make a counter offer? Or, is this something that happens when you don't have a GM in place? I would guess that President Sandy had (or assumed) the authority to deal if that was what he wanted. I would guess, but I don't know. Syndergaard in Anaheim is kind of funny, as (a) the name evokes Norse mythology* giving him ample opportunity to advance his dumb Thor brand, and ( it's a good setup for the film career he's angling for. * In Michael Chabon's Summerland, one of the characters is an MLB player — a Cuban defector who starred for the Mets but signed a big contract to jump to the Angels, and is having a mid-life crisis, feeling like a soul-less fraud living in a gated community and DH-ing for a living. His home turns out to be the end of a branch of the great tree of existence that is Yggdrasil.
  8. Back in action and welcoming Bob Alpacadaca to the leaders' board. Third place! This game is great! My next guess is Jason Tyner. Well, that's well played, because Tyner gets you within a point of third place, to where you had backslid! And you are within spitting distance fo the top! 9. I wish Blomberg used his model-in-front-of-a-fan shot from his 1976 Topps card when his career was over and nobody knew it yet. [fimg=360]https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/OyoAAOSwy9Rhi9Qp/s-l1600.jpg[/fimg]
  10. Knowing as little as I do, I'm all for it, I guess. Background in scouting, commitment to analytics, connections in Asia, experience in New York, and has a relationship with the two best players in baseball. Played the game, hires folks from traditional and non-traditional backgrounds. Turned down outreach for the D-Bags job. These aren't non-qualities. And clearly there will be layers of leadership. Most importantly, as soon as he gets on board, the organization can unfreeze.

  12. Obviously these things have niche appeal, and their publishers probably expert at printing up just enough for their market size and laser-marketing on the only potential readers, but I've always felt for the editor-guy whose got to come up with a title for a guy who has got notability but not much of a hook beyond that. [FIMG=300]https://g.christianbook.com/g/slideshow/4/446724/main/446724_1_ftc.jpg[/FIMG] I'm not sure I want to be converted to a whole manifesto, but hey, Matheny never had a losing season among his seven with the Cardinals. (Not so much with the Royals, but that's a tougher gig.( My big takeaway when I saw this is that I had always been spelling his last name wrong. [FIMG=300]http://www.joanryanink.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/feature_molina.png[/FIMG] You didn't know you wanted this book until you saw it, right? You see "Molina" and you figure "Which one?" No matter which you guessed, you were wrong. I'm thinking about how he is there wearing Cardinals pants all those years ago, when I realize ... HOLY SHIT! This book is claiming to be a New York Times bestseller! Are these lists getting more granular than just "Fiction" and "Non-Fiction" or have I missed this book becoming a phenomenon? [FIMG=300]https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51VYSY1DJ8L.jpg[/FIMG] I always like how this title makes it sound like he just snuck up on you. "OMAR! You SCARED me!" I was going to make a crack about how Bengie Molina is in a v-neck undershirt on the cover of his book, but I figured he was probably raising those sons in challenging circumstances and doesn't have a whole lot of photos from back in the day, so why be a dick? But what's Omar!'s excuse? [FIMG=300]https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61HUe0CfefL.jpg[/FIMG] I'll be honest and admit I'm always at least a little bewitched by a cover designed to look like a period baseball card. Blomberg's previous book was called Designated Hebrew, deftly playing on the fact that the two things anyone knows about him are that (1) he was Jewish and didn't hide it, and (2) he was baseball's first DH. But apparently not all the material got into there. We're now 32 years past Munson's death, "The Captain" has long had a very different meaning in Yankeeland, and Blomberg's Yankee run ended a la Ed Lynch, with his tenure coming to an end just as the Yankee dynasty was coming to its fulfillment, but some publisher decided there was still milk in that cow. [FIMG=300]https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/AAYAAOSwPrdhb5Wv/s-l640.jpg[/FIMG] [FIMG=300]https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/ZpoAAOSwcsJf~o-e/s-l500.jpg [/FIMG] Others may feel differently, and that's OK, but you were to ask me how many different windows into Paul O'Neill's family I need, my only response would be "How many do you got?"

PORT ST. LUCIE — Pedro Feliciano has been shut down because of an irregular heartbeat discovered during his initial team physical. After being sent to New York for a follow-up MRI, the left-handed reliever was back in camp Saturday, but will undergo more testing and will wear a heart monitor for several days. "He has a heart condition that could possibly be very serious," Terry Collins said. "That's why while we are waiting for further results. He is not to be on the field." Feliciano, 36, was caught off guard by the news, saying that doctors had told him he has a small "hole outside" of his heart, causing an irregular heartbeat. Feliciano said he did not believe it to be a life-threatening condition, but it is serious. "It's scary, I don't know," Feliciano said. "I am waiting for the doctors and for them to bring the monitor down here and then more tests."
