It's raised a lot of eyebrows that the Braves have been really sitting out this offseason. But folks gots to recall the context is that the Braves have been locking up very young players with pre-arb extensions in the last year.

But Boras ain't mentioned no Mets, despite just being at the Nimmo press conference.

Are you ready for the storm? Brandon Nimmo meets press to discuss his long-term contract with Mets, but is more inclined to talk about the weather. Scott Boras joins the show, with cameos from from Chelsea Nimmo and Angela Showalter. Buck is great, because no matter how anodyne the words being spoken into the mic are, Buck sits there with a face that says, "Am I really hearing what I'm hearing?"

Interesting move. It certainly reads like the end of the (7) line for McCann. Wasn't expecting a new guy on an MLB deal, but getting one for a year is a good hedge. Narváez is kinda in the Álvarez mold. Medium size but really broad across. Not as meaty as Francisco, but kinda. Both are Venezuelan as well. Narvy is good when he's good, but stinky when he's stinky. Last year he was stinky, so cross your fingers.

As for blowing up the whole stadium, that might really be a surprise for the Seavers.

=kcmets post_id=114895 time=1671139921 user_id=53] And just a side note, I think Dominion Freight hauls the Mets stuff all over the country so it could very well be that ad was gratis. Insert Cholulu instead, 'El Schlitz de hot sauces...'

One of the moves I've expected this offseason is for the Mets to move one of their catchers — Nido or McCann — to clear the decks for Francisco Álvarez. Not moving one or both of them, or bringing in another vet catcher, I figured, was a sign that Álvarez would return to Syracuse to start the season. I didn't really expect this. But in the absence of any developments, I've thought about a third way a little bit this week. Maybe the plan is to open with three catchers, allowing Álvarez to initially split time perhaps three ways with his veteran teammates, while DHing against lefties, getting into the lineup 2/3 of the time, and hopefully more further down the road.

[TH]Advantages:[/TH][TH]Disadvantages:[/TH]

Lineup Strength!Álvarez available as a righty DH certainly means Les Ruf. Likely, it means far less Ruf. Isn't this really what we want?Lineup Strength! Three catchers means that much more of the two catchers who haven't performed with the bat. Is this really what we want?

Development! Álvarez gets to find himself against major league pitching as a hitter without worrying too much until later about bearing the burden of being a #1 catcher.Development!Playing 65-70% of the time in the big leagues is possibly less useful to his development than playing 80-90% of the time in AAA.

A guy sits out for a year to recover from shoulder surgery, having originally injured the shoulder following through on his swing. I'm not seeing him get an opt-out mid-contract unless the front-end salary is really team-favorable. He's a high-risk proposition.

I think he's more likely to get his game on with Milwaukee or Colorado, or possibly Seattle. He'll have his moments, but he won't be the difference-maker in a playoff drive or post-season run that has anybody passing the Mets. This I have foreseen.

=batmagadanleadoff post_id=114880 time=1671125853 user_id=68]But you can say this for every stat. A player doesn't get an extra boost to his BA or SLG or OPS or OBP just because his HR was a decisive come from behind walk-off HR. In the stats, that HR registers the same as a HR hit at the tail end of a blow-out win.

I remember, in the mid-eighties, a player interviewed who had recently jumped from one league to the other, asked about who was more intimidating to face, Gooden or Clemens. He paused a beat and just said, "Nolan Ryan." At the time, Ryan was something like the age of Gooden and Clemens combined.

I'm not actually offering a thesis, but expressing dubiousness toward one. With regard to your post above, however, I would actually propose that the risk of stealing against a wicked good closer in a wicked high leverage spot is, if anything, less, not more. The impact of the run expectancy difference is filtered through the reality that the potential first run may be far more valuable relative to the potential second run than it is in a more general situation. We intuitively know this, which is why we call stealing and related maneuvers "one-run strategies." Though I certainly don't think the matter is closed.

Looking forward to it.

But the relative value of a run does. And the relative value of an out. Please feel free to cite any studies or formulas you are referring to.

The first two weeks of December have been a busy time for the Mets and subsequently a busy time for Mets Roster Central. Every time we'd get a new transaction plugged in, the Mets would make a further move. Compooters work fast, but programming them, not so much. And no sooner had the Mets signed Kodai Senga than MRC realized that baseball-reference.com had begun including data from the Japan Western League, which is sort of the AAA of Japan. Senga seems to have spent a part of virtually every season there, despite pretty much never having a bad year. #Mystery Anyhow, if you look below the transactions, the 2023 Mets have something that looks a whole lot like an opening day roster. Keysh has has the makeup and the minor league profile, but Brooks has something of an MLB track record. But that something isn't all that much. His defining period as a pro has been the five years he spent as a good-ish starter pitching in the KBO. And Dusan ain't Broadway. This is the offseason transaction that has been toughest to figure. Elieser Hernandez is knocked to the side by the José Quintana acquisition, and he joins the hopefuls at AAA. Elieser hasn't done much in the majors, but his minor league career has been stronger than Tylor Megill's, so don't give up on him yet. The Phillies were the busiest team in the Rule V draft, and Mets Roster Central likes to think that Trey Cobb, who has the name of a Hall-of-Fame legend plus and extra “re,” will be offered back at some time this season, and the Phils are just keeping him warm until the Mets need him. John Curtiss was signed hurt and spent a year rehabbing with the Mets, so they clearly want him to make the team in 2023. Their winter acquisitions seem to have taken away his space in the pen, though. I have him as out of options above, but as Mets Roster Central has been wrong about options before. We are working on installing a logic tree into our database to sort out whether a player has options or not, but as impenetrable as option rules can be in general, all the special roster rules for the 2020 season really add an extra layer of imperviousness to the logic. We expect to see Jake Mangum as Miami's regular or semi-regular centerfielder to start the 2023 season, joining Keyshawn as guys who have everything going for them except high prospect ratings, so it takes a Florida team to give them the opportunity they've otherwise earned. Maybe he's the next Justin Turner, but probably not. Zach Greene really knows his way around his photo-editor software: https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/1600691131595063296/--EjbjRI_400x400.jpg> The extra dips the Mets took into the Rule V draft probably are more about filing gaps in the organization than about snagging a prospect, but you may be aroused to find that Jonathan Araúz comes to the organization with 68 games of MLB experience yet was available in the minor league phase. I don't know how that works, but he seems like somebody who may get a call in an infield pinch. Also, Mateo Gil is the son of longtime big-leaguer (and current big-league coach) Benji Gil, so if pedigree is your thing, you ought to be happy. Maybe not, but if the deal is there, he could be a bargain for somebody. Conforto presumably gives them more versatility.

Bushy beards can make public recognition a challenge. Does anybody actually know what Billy Gibbons looks like? He could have been replaced in ZZ Top twice over by now and who would know?

Those two choices represent two pretty strong positions. There's room for him. Not a lot, but it's there, especially if Daniel gets Vogeled to another team.

Now you got me trying to dredge up a Yolmer Sanchez memory.

I thought he had more of a career before the Mets claimed him on waivers. A few years at least. But nope, only two pre-Mets appearances. I guess I conflate him with ... Lance Blankenship?

That's the shot shown above. His first and — thus far — only Major League homerun.

Infielder Travis Blankenhorn played a bunch of games with the injury-plagued mid-season Mets of 2021. But in 2022, he had but a single appearance, starting a game as the designated hitter for some still unfathomed reason. Infielder Travis Blankenhorn has inexplicably rejected the advice of wiser persons and signed a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals. Good comeback for LATE SHOW!

Well, I'm saying that X and Y do not have a constant value. The assumption, when constructing bottom-line stats like WAR, is often that homers happen when they happen, so there is no point in distinguishing between a homer hit when up 10 in the eighth inning batting against a position player forced into service on the mound (of infinitesimal value in the great scheme of things) and a homer hit when down three with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth batting against Kenley Jansen to close (of supreme value). The notion is that the situation in which you hit the ball is a random roll of the dice. One could argue with that, but I understand why that's the way WAR is built. In bWAR and in fWAR, a homer is worth approximately two runs (X ≈ 2), no matter how many were on when you actually hit it, no matter what the game situation. But it's different in stealing. Virtually nobody would steal up 10 in the eighth. But if you're the winning run trying to get into scoring position in the ninth — the very difference maker — the temptation to run is higher. There's a wicked closer on the mound who your matter has virtually no chance of squaring up for extra bases, but maybe they can squeak one through the infield and you can score from second. These are the factors that more typically occur around stealing. Steals and steal attempts are not randomly distributed across all game situations. So the difference between adding .31 runs (or whatever) by stealing second and losing .57 runs (or whatever) by being caught should not be measured against all situations for a strategy that is mostly deployed in a narrower range of situations. The game situation matters, and the difference between a runner on first and a runner on second is vastly different and the strategy selected defers to that. When stealing, the difference between a runner on second and a runner on first is typically more valuable than its general difference. And of course, the difference between a runner on first and a runner out has a different value. Sense? Does that make any?
