  1. And that's a big part of why I registered my tendency to disagree. While a homerun or double may happen whenever, a stolen base is a strategy targeted to a specific situation, and so taking it out of the game situation and declaring it to be worth X runs which equals Y wins isn't particularly accurate.
  2. Dansby Swanson is a fantastic name if you imagine hearing it yelled in a Bostonian accent. As for the length of these deals, I get the notion that, to the mindset of teams, length is just a way to defer salary. If I want a guy at $100 million over four years, but that's not getting it done, I can up the salary offer or I can go to, like, $140 million over seven. Most of that additional money is still for those first four years, but I get to hold on to it and let it make money for me in municipal bonds or pharmaceutical futures or whatever. If he still has something left in the last three years of that contract, good for us.
  3. I like when he piles all the merchandise in the woman's arms, he throws a clearance deGrom tee-shirt on top.
  4. Yeah, and I guess that's where I got the idea that Adonis was gonna be a guy. He wasn't much afterward, but he retained my faith. Lookit Stubby Clapp back there.
  5. Signed away under the radar to a minor league contract a week ago. The veteran of 14 appearances for the Mets now serves Brewer interests. [fimg=600]https://cdn.mlbtraderumors.com/files/2022/09/AdonisMedina-Mets-1024x683.jpg[/fimg]
  6. No, I wasn't. As for who would care, in the cases I cited above, fans cared. Some, anyhow.
  7. They could say, "We thought he was worth a lot of money, but he was as fragile as a Christmas ornament and there was just so high we were going to go." They could say, "We thought he was worth a lot of money, but with his weird thing for dolphins and My Little Pony tattoos, there was just so high we were going to go." They could say, "We thought he was worth a lot of money, but with all those incidents involving his wife and alcohol, there was just so high we were going to go." Much of the reporting after the Dickey trade and the Phillies signing of Wheeler led to accusations that the team was torpedoing both those guys on the way out the door. Maybe they were and maybe they weren't, but I understand avoiding saying much of anything at all, because there are only so many diplomatic ways of saying that somebody else thought he was worth more than we did. In fact, I understand very much the tendency to avoid saying much of anything at all.
  8. He's played a couple. And, of course, before boxing started paying off, Rocky paid the bills by being a lower-level mob enforcer. This may be his first time playing a capo-type, though.
  9. Awesome. Just awesome. I enjoyed that oral history of the Hundley sketch, but that ain't goin' to the moon.
  10. Was this past mission the one that launched you to the Moon?
  11. I think the article claims no homies in the regular starting rotation, not in the emergency starter role. I don't think it makes you an "emergency" starter if you enter the rotation after the first-go-around. Looking backwards, I don't think we'd tag the 2011 rotation (say) as not including home-grown players (though it did) because Dillon Gee didn't join the rotation until game 16.
  12. I don't think his nickname had a derisive origin, but was just a play on his name. It may have been given a negative connotation retroactively.
  13. Lolich and Ray Burris were the other ones who popped into my head. Burris, it turns out, had appeared in four games the previous season, and Lolich's ERA, while notably low from the perspective of 2022, looks less impressive in the context of the run-scoring environment of the time.
  14. As long as there's the cost-control mechanisms that keep pitchers more affordable until they get their six years in, teams will have a motivation to keep younger pitchers around for six years. But now the Mets have, perhaps, less motivation than other teams, and if they can assemble six starters they think are better than Megill and Peterson, they will, cost be damned.
  15. I would guess that only Mike Hampton ranks ahead of him among one-year Mets starting pitchers.
  16. The Chris Bassitt who publicly owned the responsibility to get on the same page with his catcher was a stand-up guy. I remember that well. He also improved immediately after that. The Chris Bassitt who publicly declared his intention to lie if ever tests positive for COVID, because his next start is more important than the health of his teammates and their families, was something else. I will remember that guy well also.
  17. It's probably pretty unlikely that David Peterson or Tylor Megill or José Butto or some combination of the three won't be holding a spot or two in the rotation at some juncture this season.
  18. I mostly jest too. I just felt really embarrassed for writing to correct something they actually did right, that I could've figured out myself, given a minute, only to have them respond quickly and correctly, if a little curtly.
  19. I tried to point out an error once and I heard back from them promptly. "It seems you have two separate stat lines for Greg McMichael with the Mets in 1998." "That's because he had two separate tenures with the team that year, Dumbass." "Oh ... yeah ... right. I mean, of course. Thanks for responding." "Fuck you."
  20. Two Questions: 1. If you're a team in the market for a shortstop, and you came up empty on Xander Bogaerts and Trea Turner (perhaps because you had problems putting their vowels in the right place), are you going harder after Dansby Swanson right now, or Carlos Correa? 2. Do you think anyone is looking at Luís Guillorme as a potential regular?
  21. The nature of numbers and their availability suggest that it shouldn't be a great feat to keep one out of circulation for an all-time team member who is continuing on with another club, if you smell a retirement in the future. The Mets equipment manager at the time of Seaver's departure (Herb Norman?) publicly stated that no other player would wear 41 while he had any say about it. Seaver ain't deGrom and deGrom ain't Seaver, but keeping a number on hold while a player continues elsewhere is easily workable. If I'm equipment manager, I pull a Herb Norman with everybody, and keep #35 on ice until Joe Smith retires and #2 in reserve until Justin Turner retires. It'd perhaps require a bunch of numbers to be squirreled away for a period, but any former Met who returned would have his number waiting for him.
  22. I think that, when the Mets state why they opted not to go as as high as another team, they tend to be accused of insulting the player with an ex post facto rationalization.
  23. Please remind me — is there no longer a posting system for players transferring from NPB to MLB, or does Senga's status somehow exclude him?
  24. Thank you.
  25. If anybody wants to cite their studies, please do.
