1. https://media.gettyimages.com/id/1239268308/ja/%E3%82%B9%E3%83%88%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF%E3%83%95%E3%82%A9%E3%83%88/bullpen-coach-dom-chiti-of-the-los-angeles-angels-poses-during-photo-day-at-tempe-diablo.jpg?s=612x612&w=gi&k=20&c=1JU-8YWFwkdv5mpNq3iaaZn7lVmfL7RqSBLGPY_yvZs=> Dom is a legend for that year he had the Knights buried in last place at mid-season, turned around the season after adding a mysterious slugger they found in the bush leagues, and ended up winning the pennant in the last turn at-bat.
2. The Mets have a couple of hard roster pinches coming up, and appear to have a couple of more approaching at the end of Spring Training.
3. No, you're an actual Uncle Steve. You've earned that.
4. Whatever his plans are, I hope they garner him a better nickname than "baseball's new George Steinbrenner."
5. Yes, Peterson and Megill are definitely wild cards. Please don't take "meaningful chance" as an indicator of where my chips are.
6. He seemed kinda really Baltimorish to me — but that's likely colored by all his seasons down here. He's from Tampa, and went to the same high school as Pete Alonso.
7. I feel like I recall a year in between his Met and Brave tenures when Joe Torre was an Angels broadcaster. Then I remember that there was no break for him in between the Mets and the Braves. Maybe it was after Atlanta. Or maybe it was a dream I had last week. OE: Looking it up now, it seems he spent six years in the Angels booth between the Braves and the Cards. Wow.
8. Hagin to Randazzo gave them some nice Wayne continuity.
9. With the Padres reeling in Seth Lugo, it's seeming like a real meaningful chance that the Mets could open the season with no home-grown players on the entire pitching staff.
10. Browning almost tossed a second one in 1989. I also remember him for going up to the roof of one of the buildings across from Wrigley to watch an inning or so of the game with Cubs fans, still in his Reds uniform.
11. Like many American families, we kind of sound Irish.
12. Legends should be written about he and Gselly bailing out the rotation in 2016. More sober analyses should be written about how they couldn't hold down rotation slots in 2017. Sad-but-illuminating novels can be written about them being frustrated in their bullpen assignments thereafter. I guess part of me thought he'd end up with the Cubs. It tends to sort of be where Mets starters who have been frustratingly consigned to the bullpen ultimately end up going.
13. Radio is dying space. Howie can gracefully fade out with the institution, but if you're under 60, you've got to take the first chance you get to jump to telecasts in whatever market you can find.
14. Talk of Rusty's second career as a restauanteur put me in mind of this ad.
15. It's interesting. When the Sox were at the top of their game in the early part of the century, the players who made a big name for themselves there but were trending downwards seemed to end up on the Dodgers. The manager too. I can't say that the trend is reversing and the Sox now end up with the Dodgers' castoffs — I'd have to squint real hard to look at Justin Turner alone and see a trend — but the Sox offseason has sure been puzzling.
16. This is great. First this forum impacts a moon mission and now we're going to impact the number of a Mets starting pitcher.
17. Let him know!
18. He certainly chose the right year in which to have his best season.
19. From The Days of Kashiwada, the Mets seemed to have some intention of fielding at least one Japanese player a year. In more recent years they've added to their total with players — Shingo Takatsu, Daisuke Matazaka, Norichika Aolki — making a partial season cameo after being grabbed in a pinch, with a little less intentionality, and subsequently with fewer Metly associations in the public mind.
20. metirish 1st!!
21. Baseball-reference refers to Kodai Senga as Koudai Senga. That needs to be sorted out and it may take a few more weeks.
22. Such a strange offseason when the first five guys in the Mets pen all hit free agency at once. I remember him for stripping 65 off of Robert Gsellman's back. Who the heck fights to wear number 65? Even offensive linemen don't get that animated over the number. For a name bullpenner brought in on a multi-year deal, he didn't seem to get the game in his hands all that much.
23. I get it. They're looking for a short-term hedge against Álvarez' development rate and a mentor for Álvarez all in one. Better options rarely come on one-year deals. Spend a few moments with the current alternatives — Kurt Suzuki? Sandy León? — and this deal might look a little better.
24. It's American League rules. Benches don't really matter much anymore. Beyond that, benching a better hitter and starting a lesser hitter to make sure the hitting quality is high on your bench is a little backwards, isn't it?
25. It was all so much clearer when HVAC Guy at Shea was posting.
