  1. While it is statistically untrue that all innings are equally important, it is true that it's counterproductive to not use your best weapon for the highest leverage situations under the rationale that you need him to get those situations.
  2. I think it's obvious to everyone else posting in the thread, and I hope that includes yourself, but listing a statistical indicator of the player's success is not evidence in support of the poster's characterization of the player's effort, which is what the poster criticized. I don't know why we have to have semantic conversations, indulging a poster who is simply playing stupid as a way to avoid accounting for himself. It's really, really easy to do better.
  3. Meet the Mets' newest minor league free agent! https://www.gosportscards.com/cdn/shop/products/henryhenry_23sanantonio_7aaaeb99-0dfe-45b5-9081-aa956ef1439b_grande.jpg?v=1687927244>
  4. My feeling is that designated closers are are always a invitation to sinking ships. Just go with the pitcher who looks like your best bet for the day and have somebody ready behind that person. Sometimes that guy may be the same guy for most of the season, and sometimes not, but be honest with yourself. Last night's meltdown was mostly a product of (a) not sticking with Ottavino who had about as ideal an eight inning as you can ask for, ( placing the redemption of Díaz ahead of winning the contest, and © not having somebody ready behind him (which was a byproduct of . All pitchers fail, and putting a guy struggling through a current pattern of failure in such a spot was trying to show leadership by courting disaster.

  6. Ottavino throws six pitches for six strikes, getting three outs. Yes, go to him to open the ninth.
  7. I think the evidence suggests that Burger's cleats beat the throw, but his foot did not.
  8. Ottavino coming on for the bottom of the eighth, which kind of suggests that we're going back to Díaz in the ninth.
  9. Garrett certainly looks sharper when he enters at the top of an inning than when he comes in with runners on. Just need one out from him here and two runs are home.
  10. At 3–2 with the bases loaded, my wife remembered that I hadn't taken the chihuahua out. Bases were loaded, but the family comes first, so I left the Mets to the fates, and out we went, in the rain. I came back in and as I came up the stairs, I was thinking, "It had BETTER be 7–2 now." And hey! Look! It's 7–2!
  11. The Mets are going so rough offensively, instead of hitting a deep drive and trying to wave it fair, Lindor was reduced to using his magic waving skills by hitting a foul pop and trying to wave it out of play. For what it's worth, it did go out of play and he drove in a run with a groundout later in the at-bat.
  12. "You can't be too Larry Fine." — Keith Hernandez As Miami scores their first pitch on an 0-2 pitch. Shoulda been Larry Finer, I guess.
  13. I'm enjoying our new leadoff hitter, even as he chases for strike three.
  14. I was familiar with this song, which features references to Big Shea and Butch Huskey, but I hadn't seen this video (I'm not particularly confident that it's even original) that features beautiful if indifferently lit overhead shots of the World's Fair at night, plus action at what looks to be the earliest years of Shea Stadium. 15. The enemy shall be vanquished. A new dawn shall arise. Relatedly, Nimmo is back!
  16. Some mascot characters are more inspired than others, and there is nothing offensive about this guy in concept. But in execution, come on. Isn't the main point of mascot figures that they should be soft, inviting, padded, and huggable? Not rendered in hard edges and molded plastic? How many eyes have been lost to this guy? Even his waistline looks like something I could hurt myself against. https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/724729761830854656/QWN_vosH_400x400.jpg>
  17. I couldn't find a TWIB thread for this almost-completed week, but it's going to be season-ending shoulder surgery for Jung Hoo Lee after coming down hard trying to make a leaping catch at the wall. On the other side of the dial of fortune Paul Skenes no-hit the Cubs through six at Wrigley, striking out 11. Pittsburgh then pulled him, because of course they did. Alas, after adding over 500 players, that column had exactly zero data in it. So it is with great joy that we add Nick Bautista III, our 504th player, but first to include data in the Name_Suffix column. Don't believe for a minute that yesterday was a total loss.

  21. You're all missing a game here. And as of 20 seconds ago, it became a game that the Mets are trailing by four.
