  1. Hi, I'm Carlos Delgado and I'm 34. I worry that the TV station will be filled with dumb stuff, and the substance of Mets brand will degrade as much off the field as it has degraded on. New stadium (probably corporately named), new batting helmets --- lots of potential for dumbness. And well, yeah, it sounds like I want to live in my conservative littel bubble, but I fear much conservative dumb corporate structuring: "We're rich, we can afford to make decisions based on proven models."" Carlos was looking 24 for the first two months and he's looking 44 for the last one. That's up in the air but he seems likely to remain a solid asset through this year at least. TV station filled with dumb stuff: check. But less consequetial as the team has been solid programming. Plus they put G-FaFiF on. Bonus New stadium plans have been introduced. Most objecitions are minor, but lack of a signature idea outside of the Ebbets faade is disappointing. I was right about the helmets carrying over into the season. Conservative and progressive corporate marketing dumbness has downgraded the brand --- the helmets, the (ugh!) theme song, "Professor Reyes" on the Diamondvision, contiuming to play the same songs at Shea that they play everywhere else --- but not nearly as much as the on-field play has upgraded it.
  2. As noted in another thread, I worry that David Wright can't be all that.
  3. Wow. I'm going to have to stay late now.
  4. Part of the magic I guess is that, as a character, he's (seemingly) so shallow, but something in his condition touches people so deeply to turn him into a metaphor for anything. McLean's tribute is all the more touching in light of his career trying to --- like Reeves --- show people he's more than the larger-than-life role he played early on, with an epic 8-1/2-minute. number-one song.
  5. When did that appear? It sort of makes it like a sports uniform, like he has to be indentifiable from all angles. "Son, that guy over there freezing the Bulletteers with arctic breath. Check the program and see who he is. He's got an S inside a diamond shape on his back."
  6. Somebody agreed with me about Supe III.
  7. Without giving it away, did they satisfactorily handle explaining the odd coincidence that the five-year absence of Superman and the five-year absence of Clark Kent coincided?
  8. By the way, as disappointing as Superman III and Superman IV were, so much so that this film is a sequel that pretends that they didn't happen, the opening scene of Superman III is wonderful, and it may be the last excellent thing that Richard Lester ever did. Richard Lester (second "by the way" here): Still Alive.
  9. My only nit is with the casting of Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane. While she and Routh have obvious chemistry, she just seems to be too young for this role. At this point in time, Lois Lane is supposed to be a fierce, pulitzer prize-winning reporter with a five year-old son, but at times I couldn't get past the fact that Bosworth was only 23 here... My local free paper said she gave the effect of a prom queen with a fake ID.
  10. particularly those with an unstressed or weakly stressed first syllable That's not usuually the distinguisher, it's more typically words with slender vowels --- a short e or i or y, which those examples have. We go back to M*A*S*H* here. Hawkey once tried to phone a supply order, disguising himself as Charles, and embellsihed Winchester's upper-crust Boston Brahmin accent by including "an harmonica." This, of course was a word with a broad vowel, which caused BJ's face to grow puzzled, leading Hawkeye to re-iterate, "Yes, I said 'an harmonica'."
  11. See, controversisal.
  12. You're right, before a pronounced "h" I should have used the article "a". Thanks for the reminder. No, stick to your controversial gay guns.
  13. Good point, Monk. Don't think I didn't also notice your controversial usage of an in "an historic."
  14. I worry, and I worry that I will constantly worry, that the last good start from Martinez or Glavine will be the last good start from Martinez or Glavine. They'll have to hit their way out of this.
  15. There are backup plans, and there is enough fuel in the lineup that Valentin can't crash this plane all by himself. So, for now, I'm enjoying the ride. Somebody find out what inspired him to bat lefty against a lefty.
  16. A lousy dozen games bench riding. Ouch.
  17. I don't understand why some people want Cliff on the bench when Nady comes back. Who is advocating the benching of Floyd?
  18. I don't get why the majority of people want him on the bench when Nady comes back. Who wants who on the bench?
  19. Tradeys are on the board but the Keepeys are still up 12-2.
  20. I think, with the Mets making a championship run, if they traded a guy who could help them make it this year, for future considerations, those prospects better have bionic limbs, because that GM will be risking a whole lot.
  21. Four out of ten. If I voted again, I might have gone three. May have felt differently ff I hadn't watched it with my she-partner, but stupid self-serving guys acting stupid and self-serving embarasses me. I think Ms. Portman has turned in some performances since then. You want an early peaking career, look at her co-star. Timothy Hutton won an Oscar as a teenager (didn't he?)and has been a poor man's Mickey Rourke (which is poor indeed) ever since.
  22. Lastings Milledge can't bunt.
  23. The thread has doubled in size. 338. Al Leiter wasn't re-signed because he changed Lastings Milledge's station on the radio.
  24. How is 79 not a winner? That guy deserves some sort of scholarship, at least.
