  1. Yeah, whether you like the song or not, searching for one that will help capture the imagination, serve the subject, and trigger unexpected memory responses from the reader/listener gets points. You know, if you're going to pick a Billy Joel song, picking "You're Only Human" or "I Go to Extremes" may get you farther with me than "Piano Man" or "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant." Or maybe not.
  2. Certainly. Good scansion matching. True rhymes. This is part of quality. How much? Can't say. There can be cleverness in displaying the failures as well as the successes.
  3. Garrett Olson: has put up some hefty ERAs for Baltimore. And did a strange photo spread with Felix Hernandez.
  4. Heck of a career Ramirez has had himself in his tour of the NL Central.
  5. Indeed. Catcher Lucas May (Kansas City) Good powa! Questionable defense! Lefty Garrett Olson (Pittsburgh)
  6. Minor league deal, maybe.
  7. The Mets have apparently claimed righty starter Jeremy Hefner from the Pirates less than a month after the Bucs claimed him from the Padres. Report has them signing two minor league deals too, but I have ESPN blocked at work (good move, new employer!), so go see for yourselves and let us know.
  8. Yeah, I think "available data" is a good standard by which to pick your adoptees.
  9. Manny Acosta, also a candy date for a non-tender.
  10. Had a good season for Bingo, and followed that up with a pretty lousy showing in the AFL. But no matter. It was all part of his strategy of getting teams to pass on him in the Rule V draft and getting him returned to the loving bosom of Wally Backman with a trip to Buffalo. Collin's a righthander, gets more than his share of strikeouts, does OK in the walk front, and gives up as many flies as grounders. He's a southerner drafted out of Braves territory who went to Berry College (??). He throws hard stuff in the low to mid 90s and a curve and change, but got the cutter working real nice for himself this year. Collin has a boss blog, a buzzy bride, a balladeer brother, and suddenly a real good chance to make it to the show, after making the tough jump from A+ to AA and making it with panache.
  11. Braun is appealing, with a statement from his spokesman claiming there are "highly unusual circumstances surrounding this case which will support Ryan's complete innocence." Any predictions on what the "Highly unusual circumstances" will turn out to be? The mind boggles at any new angles they might come up with, so I guess they go with the old I-was-doped-against-my-will standby.
  12. In addition to Pelf and Paulino, I guess Torres has to be offered a contract --- and presumably will. Adam Rubin notes that a non-tender of Paulino would get the roster down to 40, which I guess they have to get done in the next few days in order to add Rauch and Francisco.
  13. Mike Silva interviewsformer Met nemesis John Rocker. No surprise that even in his older, wiser, more reflective mode, he's still insufferable. Big scoop is that he tells of being pressured to take a 'roid test in the aftermath of the Pearlman article, succumbing, and failing it, only to see the league bury the result.
  14. One truth doesn't make another truth less true.
  15. Exactly. It's all part of my nefarious plan to get Willie Harris his first MVP.
  16. Interesting thought. Probably something to that. More importantly. It's been a week. You, you, and you --- tell me you're not moving on.
  17. Not for nothing, but seeing as how is reputation is in a thousand little pieces, he'd do well to make a huge conciliatory gesture and personally turn that trophy over to Kemp.
  18. Am I crazy to think we have a lesser crop of players than usual? Are we using the top 500? The 610 or so who have scored top-30 in at least one season? All 1000 or so? I mean, Raul Gonzalez and Lee Gutterman? That's scratching some bottom in Round One. Not that folks aren't making lemonade, because they are.
  19. I don't think that's actually the choice we're confronted with.

  21. As of now, he's helping Murphy with fielding and hitting lefties at second, but he's not really that much better than Murphy at either of those things for me to think a platoon will last long. But Murphy's perhaps keeping a spot warm for Reese Havens, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Murphy flipped for pitching, sooner or later. I get the idea Mattingly sees a little of his own young self in our Daniel, and envisions him as someone he can work with. Murphy has pretty similar career numbers to James Loney, interestingly.
  22. I set the poll to allow you to change your vote, if you see fit.
  23. I don't think he opens the season in the three hole, but if the year goes anything like the last few, he'll find his way there eventually.
