  2. That Burris card is weak. The guy led the Mets in wins, which, granted, was as impressive as Daniel Murphy leading them in homers. It was nice of Joel Youngblood to come down from the mountain for that photo shoot. What a Beach Boy that guy was. He's like Mike Love's lost baby brother.

  4. I am SO HAPPY!
  5. Valdy is trying to set a record in the category of hits:meaningful hits ratio.
  6. Fman with a re-write of my post. Alex Cobb, afraid to throw a strike to Nieuie. Hey, didn't he direct Sid & Nancy?
  7. Mets are into the pen with nine outs to get. Over/Under on the number of pitchers it'll take to get there: 4.5. Mets, we need runz.
  8. His name am Jon Rauch He big as a couch Lord help him throw it To the guy in the crouch
  9. edit, Whoa, check out Scott's line in that game: He started, went 1/3 of an inning and surrendered 7 runs on six hits and a walk. I kinda remember that debacle. Look at him, though. He's pitching scared.
  10. That sucks. And he gets no less than two cards with two faces for his five lousy innings with California in the second half of 1984. It's amazing how little productivity the Mets got out of Swan and Stearns from 1981-1984. Those two and Apodaca a few years earlier --- dissolving into the sunset on an eternally rotating rehabilitation program.
  11. The 1970 Ohio Bobcats had Mike Schmidt. I imagine he could have taken a team from The New School to the NCAA finals. I think that 1986 Maine team featured Mike Bordick.
  12. Donruss 1982: "So the crossfire had me and Rick pinned down. And wouldn't you know it but we start hearing the unmistakable sound of TC's chopper. Rick looks at me and I knew we just had to hold them off for three minutes. Longest three minutes of my life." Where the heck is 1975?

  14. 1974: "What? Me? I was hoping you wouldn't notice me."1976: "I don't like this job. They make you work."1977: "Merely seconds later, but I'm already starting to shed my winter weight!"1978: "I'm handsome, tan, in shape, nice haircut, no 'stache. Is this even actually me? It's Steve Austin in my uniform or something, isn't it?"1979: "Don't make any loud noises. Me and Nino got wasted last night."1979: "That guy had 177% more wins than me. I have 177% more mustache."1980: "Here I am, captured in action. I know. I'm surprised too!"1981: "Mental note: Take it easy on the ribs. I'm starting to look like a fucking whale."1981: "Stop counting my chins. I'm a guy who likes to party. I LIKE to party. That's all there is to it."1982: "This all came so easy until Hodges hit me with the fucking ball.1983: "I love being a pitcher. But the pitching part of it is starting to be a real pain in the ass."1984: "What the fuck is a Donruss? That's not really a real thing, is it? For serious?"1984: "We've been coming to the same party for 12 years now, and in no way is that depressing."1984: "I suck. Gimme that damn ball before I get released."1984: "Clean slate time. You release me. I release my mustache."1984: "My shoulder is for shit and somebody still wants to give me beer money. Psyched!"
  15. Craig Swan is a guy who I like almost none of the available photos. The childish goodtime grins clash with the adult mustaches for a perpetual losing team to suggest to me a guy who parties with Ron Burgandy too much, and doesn't take his job particularly seriously. I liked Swan, I just don't like his photos. Ron Swoboda, on the other hand, rarely took a bad photo. But really, of all the great shots available of Mookie, they really got a dog there.
  16. Collin tackles the age-old question, and begs you to stop asking it. Good use of the word "volatile." While fans can listen to the these claims and enjoy the drama of the minor league soap operas, the players cannot (for our own sanity) get caught up in it. If we gave validity to every claim that was made about our careers, most of us would cry ourselves to sleep at night from the brutality of people's words. The rest of us would be eternally bitter at our stagnate progress. Either way it ends up hindering our careers. Needs a hug, he does. Anyway, Collin had something of a rough go his last time out at Harrisburg, but has generally been real effective (2.39 ERA in 11 starts), and I'd be wondering when the phone was gonna ring if I was him.
  17. And Dustin Martin farmed out to Bingo.
  18. Bay is playing some sort of playground baseball where there aren't enough fielders to cover the whole diamond and everything to the right of second base is a foul, right?
  19. MFS62 wrote: Does the Trop have a full time dome, or can it be retracted? I'm leery about how the knuckler will perform in conditioned, windless air. My knowledge is that the knuckler performs well in domed stadiums, riding the current of criss-crossing wafts of air conditioning. Joe Niekro's flutterball certainly did yeoman's work in Houston and Minnesota. Well, Houston, anyhow.

Problem is the relievers still seem to put you on base for free. Yankees are another low-batting average team that strives on making each hit count. Walls are a little more distant down at the Trop though at least. Absoultely. But my plan is to not use the pen until the starter is unconscious.
  21. A team that does it with low batting averages, though, may play to our strengths (starters [post-Pelfrey] who don't put you on base for free, and our weaknesses (lousy-assed D). That said, we still have to find a way to get it done offensively. And I have no idea how. Really surprised to see Davis still on the team. Also impressed with Alderson's trade aversion. Look your guys in the face, and say, "You better figure your shit out, because damned if I'm going to mortgage the farm to bring some hotshot in here to do your jobs for you."
  22. Oh, I do too. I'm prone to any habit-forming behavior. And habit-forming, life-destructive is the worst. Any gambling I do is in the spirit of staking stuff I don't mind giving away anyhow. And buying lunch for a co-worker is a pleasure, and actually takes the edge off any hard feelings over the loss. And graciously collecting on a lunch does the same I hope, for them.
  23. Well, it's just a sandwich roll and a Fresca. I don't FEEL dirty.
  24. Lefty Specialist wrote: A guy who works for me is a huge Yankee fan. He came into my office on Friday and asked if I wanted to bet on who'd win the series. I said no, the Mets were going to get swept. He looked at me oddly, with that Yankee fan way of being unable to comprehend that you expect your own team to lose. So on Monday morning, instead of being razzed, it was, "wow, you were right." Unless blood is on the line, you gotta take that bet every time. I throw down a lunch bet every Philly series with a my Chase-loving co-workers. Makes for good relations and stand-up fanhood. Mutual respect grows, and self-respect flourishes.
