  1. Meet Jim Malone, our totally badass new strength and conditioning coach. http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/mar/27/padres-malone-coaches-bodies/ He'll make you sorry you were even BORN! I've met a lot of fools in my day, Rick Flair, but trying to take food off Jim Malone's table is a the sort of stupid that gets a man turned into a pretzel! Listen Flair, you can talk all you want to, but if I were you, I'd be working on your running skills, because when we meet in the ring at Wrestlemania XVI, running is going to be your only choice, But don't you worry. Malone is gonna CATCH YA!
  2. And one a muckraking novelist who blew the lid off the meat packing industry.
  3. "Read it and hope he's right about a change in ownership" suggests you do care.
  4. Upton is everybody's favorite flavor of ice cream these days, isn't it?
  5. So he's not a financial analyst and it ain't the Wall Street Journal publishing his account. We'll see. Obviously, there's broke and there's broke. Myself, I'd love to be as broke as a Wilpon.
  6. Bizarre that the Rays are taking steps to replace Upton with Upton.
  7. A special welcome back --- to the shores of St. Lucie at least --- to Rebecca Nickeas. Rebecca, you may recall, is the young lady who was stood up for at her wedding by the able and affectionate Blondie, Curly, Pearlie, Squinty, and Blackie. She works as an Account Manager/Technical Recruiter (which sounds like HR to me) out of the Atlanta area, and has apparently been featured in the role of "Bartender" in the 2009 feature, The Vicious Kind (2009).

  9. Foolish, I think, of him to commit so early to this being his exit year.
  10. i don't know much about much when it comes to the NFL, but I paid attention back when Bernie Kosar was active. He was best his first few years but was regularly injured and if I recall correctly, frequently concussed. Like every year, or so I remember. The other thing I recall is that he married a woman with fantastic hair, and their daughter become an adult film star.
  11. The important thing to me is that Rosenthal is playing both sides of the question. The Mets, he seems to be suggesting, (a) would be wise to deal Dickey, ( would totally be douchebags anyway if they do. He gets to rip them after the fact either way.
  12. I'm willing to bet, should the Mets not land Dickey, that no senior members of Sandy's team will be found to utter the word "greedy." I mean, have they ever ripped a ballplayer a new moral asshole for signing elsewhere? Even Darryl? Even Hampton, who was taking it pretty hard in the court of public opinion anyway? Maybe there'll be alleged leaks that senior Mets personnel privately spit on the ground every time Dickey's name is mentioned. They likely will be no more substantive than the ones Rosenthal is working with now. Besides, if Dickey doesn't sign, the Mets trade him for some player or players they want and that remain under their control, and it's a win either way for a team that spun a little gold from the straw of a minor league contract to veteran. Why would they subsequently rip the guy? Makes no sense except Rosenthal must see pre-emptive baiting as a job requirement.
  13. Congratulations to Sherman for being the first New York tabloid columnist to write an offseason column suggesting a team shore up and trust the process rather than pursue high risk/high headline value transactions. Remember that offseason that every columnist in town insisted that the Mets get Alfonso Soriano?
  14. [*]And... Ike Davis sleepwalking through the first two months of the season. [*]And... Freddie Freeman deciding to put off getting better for a year or so. [*]And... Gaby Sanchez getting a blood transfusion from Jason Bay. [*]And... Allen Craig being held up until May 1 to get started. [*]And... Cory Hart spending 1/3 of this season in the outfield. [*]And... Anthony Rizzo spending an absolutely huge chunk of his productivity in the Pacific Coast League. [*]And... The league has a lot of good firstbasemen. Paul Godschmidt and Yonder Alonso too. Brandon Belt ain't bad either, but his ballpark dulls his shine. Things just really fell into place for LaRoche in a way I wouldn't expect them to again. But Davey Johnson sure gets his players to play.
  15. No, it actually holds together. Just took a while is all.
  16. Now that was a tough sentence to parse.
  17. Willingham and LaRoche were always great bats to have around. Always able to produce as long as you didn't ask too much of them. But pencil them in as the number six hitter or the fourth outfielder and they may well surprise you by the end of the season. How and when they became the best hitting firstbaseman and leftfielder in the league is a mystery to me. Good for them, and chalk one each up to Davey Johnson and Ron Gardenhire. Heck, Davey Johnson, special assistant with the Nats back in 2010, probably gets an assist for Willingham.
  18. The record suggests Reyes received an offer. It just wasn't a formal written offer on paper. It's exactly the sort of grass that Matthews would try to make hay from, but...
  19. Yeah, the Wikipedia entry says that Liam Neeson studied for the role for a while but then withdrew because he had gotten too old for the part. Neeson has just this year turned 60, which, by Hollywood standards, should have hardly put him out of the running when shooting started three years ago to play a latter-day Lincoln, who died at 56. More likely just as true that he felt too old to engaunten himself with a starvation diet, while Daniel D-L probably lives for that sort of thing. And then they have 66-year-old Sally Field ("hubba hubba" --- John Cougar Lunchbucket) playing Mary Todd Lincoln, who would have been 47 at the time her husband and president was killed.
  20. "The new CBA has accelerated the signing of players from the Draft," said general manager Sandy Alderson as part of a press release. "And with the continuation of two teams in the Dominican Summer League, we need more rookie level roster space for our young players. We are happy to be back in the Gulf Coast League while retaining our affiliation in Kingsport of the Appalachian League." The Mets nonetheless openly cited their financial constraints when they shut down GCL operations last year. The Mets are now (again) one of only three organizations with nine minor league affiliates.
  21. This comes out of the Bill Maher fund, I think/hope. I imagine they had to slash everywhere last year just to get through the season with some bank left over and now they think they can unslash a little bit --- run lean but not gutted.
  22. Hey, man, we got the baby-Mets back after a year without 'em. Big deal, I think. They may only have a few shillings to play with, but I'm glad now that they do, they've returned to re-investing in development where they were led to cut back a year before.
  23. Clearly what Minaya hoped for and what the Mets got diverge wildly, which is why one may glean a cautionary tale.
  24. Jackie Earle Haley as Alexander Stephens? I'm in!
