  1. It's worth mentioning that the last two times the Marlins dumped contracts and lived on austerity budgets while rebuilding, they rebuilt well and more quickly than expected.
  2. Yeah, rollout is today. Santana stays in shape. I give him that.
  3. 1994 MIL 0-20, 8.85 1995 ATL 10-13, 6.13 That's no small amount of redemption with Atlanta, though.
  4. And Johan Santana is sporting the alternate blues. That sexy ASG patch gets more than a little lost in there, I think.
  5. Mike Kerwick: I'll show you how to rock a fedora, Martino.
  6. Oh, and maintaining our death grip on fourth place... looks totally do-able!
  7. I don't want them sending a counter-offer. I want them locked in a sweaty room making amendments in pen.
  8. Davey in the gravy. Amazingly never won the NL MoY, despite turning both the Mets and the Reds around. Won one for the Orioles in 1997, which was announced the same day he tendered his resignation under duress to Peter Angelos.
  9. So now they have Stanton, a bobblehead museum, and a couple of tanks full of fish. And fish food ain't free. On the other hand, they get Yunel Escobar, and he's Cuban. And the comely Minerva Escobar comes with the trade too, I think. So there's that. Marlins win!!

You are Jose Reyes...you spent the first part of your career in New York City, made a nice name for yourself and parlayed that into a contract that made you one of the wealthiest human beings on the planet, AND gave you easy access to the south beach lifestyle. You are turning 30 next year and are now being shipped to Toronto. In Miami (with its large Latin-American population) you could be king. In Toronto, you will be just another foreign shortstop with the Canadian equivalent of a green card. How do you think he feels? Later There are plenty of Caribbeans in Toronto. It's one of the most international cities on earth.
  11. I'm replaying the 2012 season in OotP Baseball and damned if I haven't weaponized this guy again. He was hitting about the same as his real-world sapsorrow .175 about five weeks into the season. I'd been starting him only against lefties and after we rub against a run of righthanded pitchers, he has the cheek to come into my office and say that he expects to be starting regularly. The gall! The audacity! The chutzpah! I raise an arched eyebrow, or arch a raised eyebrow, and have my finger on the button to release the player then and there. I long to tell him that he was the whitest of white elephants, that he has no reason to expect anything but tittering derision. But I keep my head and realizede I was short on righthanded options. Pascucci was hurt, slumping and unhappy in Buffalo, and the waiver wire and trading block aren't showing me any happy alternatives. So I throw him a bone, started working him in against righties, and the sucker finds his stroke. We're in game fifty and he just hit his seventh homer. He's at .240 / .310 / .490 // .801 and if I can get that out of him for the season, I'll be thrilled. Then I realize again that it's all fake. And in reality, he's gone, without any hint of a revitalization, and taken my team's money with him.
  12. Oh, chee, I read Nickeas but thought Thole.
  13. Kristan, we hardly knew ye'. That's mighty stylish of you the way you use that a in your first name. Kristan is the mother of three and a dedicated runner. Rob credits her with being the strength and inspiration that allowed him to go through four (!!) offseason surgeries and open the next year as the Mariners' starting catcher.

  16. The Portland franchise in the NASL was also successful --- perhaps second in fan support only to the Cosmos --- and both the name and the logo of the MLS franchise comes from the NASL forerunner. That team went to the NASL finals in year one and the excitement was so palpable that the city nickname of "Soccer City USA" caught on. Problem was that making the finals your first year can be a letdown when you never get that far again. Notable NASL Timbers included Clyde Best and John Bain. To keep this in the baseball forum, it's worth noting that among those trying to wreck their joy was Vancouver Whitecaps defender Mark Nickeas.
  17. Really? Jeeps.
  18. Great beyond great. And possibly the Athletics reclaiming old territory would be the first pebble moved to break the dam of territorial exclusivity. I believe that the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area is the US metropolitan region with the largest population to be represented by no major league sports.
  19. On the other hand...
  20. A Northern New Jersey team, a Brooklyn team, a Long Island team, and possibly a Conncecticut team too. Bad for the Mets and Yankees, and possibly the Red Sox, but good for just about the whole world.
  21. If the silly, scared, and grossly monopolistic territorial rights rules were lifted, there would be an initial instability as organizations rushed to fill opportunities that should have been filled decades ago. This would soon settle down and an honorable stability would reign. This would be more true if the parallel reform of the emancipation of the minor leagues took place. Even now the indy minors --- Eastern League, Northern League, ALPB, Can-Am --- should be flooding MLB markets and reminding them that they own nothing.
  22. On it, but... hard.
  23. It's easy enough to imagine Upton garnering his team more wins going forward. Every pitcher is a candidate for a disaster.
  24. If somebody from a major national newspaper really offered inside information that the game was done and the race was run and that the sale was imminent by X date, sure it's news. Else, it's speculation amplified by a wishful fan base, many of whom like to play journalist in the blogosphere.
