  2. There are hundreds of guys that could manage a major league team. I think it's an open point how many or how few can do it successfully.
  3. On-base percentage has been around forever. And it's value has been well-known, if not frequently built around. It's just resentment of the opinions of mystery outsiders like James that leads anybody to still deride it. Trout is an excellent basestealer, a wonderful baserunner, an ideal on-base man, and a very rangey defender. The idea that these things have value isn't new, isn't esoteric, isn't controversial, and certainly isn't "new age." So, if you detect a value, it's the most natural thing in the world to try and figure out an objective way to measure how much.
  4. A ton of these guys are under 30, and a championship this year could lead to more. But the Yankees will soon need a shorty and would probably get something like a sure thing to replace Jeter than put a rookie on the spot. Peralta also has a cool name. He's my guy.
  5. As surely as the Mets believe the magic of one more reliever will guarantee their success, because every lead will be final and lasting, so the Yankees surely believe that the key to their success is to steal from the team that knocked them out the year before, because surely anybody who beats them must be invincible, right? I don't know who you are, Mr. Tiger2012/FutureYankee. Will you be worthy to war the same socks as Jaret Wright, as Randy Johnson, as Johnny Damon? I don't know. I just hope you cost a bundle and pay out in pennies.
  6. Remember how the Diamondbacks were made to almost apologize after winning, because they denied New Yorkers the storybook ending that they so deserved two months after the terrorist attack. This New Yorker already lost his story book ending a month earlier, and was more than happy for this paperback substitute.
  7. What makes this especially wonderful to watch is that, despite ample personal evidence that coming from behind was possible, Yankee fans went into game three almost hopeless and game four utterly and completely hopeless. They lost before they lost, and then lost again, because they had lost themselves. They weren't rooting for a comeback, and really, were almost rooting against a comeback, because they had already hopped off the bandwagon, afraid to lose, like utter losers do, and were actually throwing shit en masse at the bandwagon. The players had openly stated their relief at getting away from their own shitmongering fanbase. So what if the Yankees had won the first two games in Detroit? The fans would have had to climb back on, sit in their own impacted shit bombs, and then probably lose anyway, while they all climbed over each other in a panic to bail off the wagon again before the loss was complete. Watching this terrible fanbase demoralize their own overpaid and ridiculously stacked team and drive them to failure, as Detroit's fans act all human and lift their team to victory. Holy shit, that's satisfying. I wanted to run outside and burn a police car in celebration.
  8. Yeah, the News front cover and the Post front and back covers all leave me with a bad taste in my mouth. The Yankees losing in the playoffs doesn't make them beneath their fans, and it's the typical cheap pandering populism of the tabloids to suggest otherwise. Three and half million saps walked through the turnstiles and dated the team this season and I imagine as many or more will next season.
  9. What in the world are they planning to do this offseason? They've got more hateful dead wood than a Victorian mansion. Their brand took such a tarnishing tonight. The Mets are a team made low by the owners investing all their money in Bernie Madoff. The Yankees are looking for all the world like a team made low by the owners investing all their money in the Yankees.
  10. Best Yankee beatdown since the Jay Witasick game,
  11. And we have an A-Rod sighting. And we have an A-Rod out.
  12. A little early for Scherzer to run out of gas, I fear.
  13. Detroit sure looked like an excellent team coming out of spring training. They were never the league's juggernaut this season, but they finished strong and sure seem like one of those teams that chose the right time to peak. Wow.
  14. Me too. By the way, the "not the most feared hitter on his team" argument could conceivably apply to Cabrera and Fielder, no? Most valuable --- it's not that complex.
  15. Ceetar wrote: Now it's clearly one of the worst Mets contracts ever but this is far beyond even what people against the signing thought would happen. He could somehow produce next year, but as we stand now, it's number one with a bullet, no?
  16. Detroit, I salute you. $99-119 million left on that man's contract.
  17. Benching A-Rod... great strategy until you realize... nobody else in your lineup will hit for you either. Girardi either has some dirt on the guy or has a chip on his shoulder the size of Texas. What a maniac.
  18. Avisail Garcia singles in run number two. Assist to Yankee defense. Jeter wouldn't have let that happen. Sure.
  19. Tuning in from Niamey looking for American glory. Miguel Cabrera sometimes looks like a Venezuelan Don Zimmer.
  20. 100% of players say they want a good situation. 90% find a way to convince themselves that the situation is right if the money is right. Of the remaining 10%, I would guess that 9% have no clue what a good situation looks like no matter how serious they are. If Sandy can put together the right packages for Wright and D'KAY, I'm sure he can paint a rosy enough picture of the future to accompany the offers.
  21. I like how the URL betrays that the original headline writer didn't know what team Trout played for.
  22. 27. Short Cuts (1993)-- Raymond Carver stories set in a sprawling Altman film? YES, PLEASE. Long, but worth it. Girl I absofuckinglutely should have been with in college, but wasn't because we were never available at the same time, gives me a call. I'm working in Chelsea, and she just started a grad program that has brought her back to the city. Can we get together? "Hells YEAH!" I say, but cooler than that. (I work in Chelsea, after all.) I tell her I'll head up to her place after I get off at 5:30. "Great!" she says. "Great!" I say. A half hour later, she calls and says she wants to get some lab work done. Can I kill some time and come up a little later? "Sure! I'll duck into a movie after work and get the A line up there after it lets out." "GREAT! Looking forward to seeing you!" I duck into... Short Cuts! By the time I get up there seventy hours later, pulled and stretched to my limits emotionally, GIASHBwiC is absofuckinglutely asleep. My love life once again resumes its struggle to survive like it's being sprayed from overhead by ominous helicopters. To this day, my one-item bucket list reads "Punch Matthew Modine in face."
