Rico Brogna and the Long Sunset: Mets in Retirement, 2012

G-Fafif wrote: That bike was presented to him by Tug McGraw, who arrived on it with the visor down on his helmet so it came as a surprise to John and the crowd. Nice moment for sale. Mets sponsor for years was Hempstead Harley, which might have had something to do with John getting something he'd find no use for. In 2003, the Mets honored Gary Carter's induction into the HOF with something similar. Gary being Gary said, graciously, something to the effect of I've never ridden one of these before...but oh boy! Gary Carter's bike being auctioned off for charity. -
John Paul Ricciardi --- extended three years. Gulf Coast Mets --- re-established.

Vic Sage wrote: The movie is based on Goodwin's TEAM OF RIVALS, and only deals with the last 4 months of his life. I think that keeping the focus that narrow will allow for more interesting story-telling rather than trying to cover the full scope of his life. In fact, they are more likely to convey the full scope of his life by keeping the focus so narrow. Well, that's just great. But then, I wish they hadn't called the thing Lincoln. It's funny how large-scope historical films have to have larger-scope titles. And so Pearl Harbor and Titanic and Capote end up promising in their titles more than they even hope to deliver. Funny to see Tommy Lee Jones, a Texan who rarely tries to sublimate his accent much, playing a northern arch-abolitionist.

How much can they cover about one of the most covered figures? The backcountry formative years? The young lawyer? The gay innuendo? The Lincoln-Douglas debates? The hotly contested Republican fight for the nomination? The war, the war, the war? The agony over McClellan? Gettysburg? The madness of Mary? The second inaugural? The cost of victory? The plot against him? The assassination? All this in one narrative? Any of those subjects could be a movie (or more) in itself. Edited by Michael Kahn? Music by John Williams? Those guys are legends! The greatest! But they have enough years on them to go back to Lincoln's time if you put their lives back to back, I think. Can they still split a rail?

The greatest superhero of all time comes to the big screen. (Superpowers: wrasslin', railsplitting, and incredible world-on-his-shoulders gravitas.) Steven Spielberg directs. Daniel Day-Lewis stars. President Obama basks in reflected glow. [youtube:1uiw531j]xWEghYJSqtg[/youtube:1uiw531j]

OK, we're beginning the heavy transactional portion of our spousal offseason. Kristen Bay, we hardly knew ya. Kristen and Jason leave us as the parents of two kids, one of which was born in New York City during his Met tenure. The couple took up residence in Larchmont during the baseball season. Megan Burke joins us as a self-made woman. In fact, Greg relocated to be near her during the offseason, moving to the Baltimore area where she ran a pretzel franchise.

Resuming Baseball Activities: Injuries in 2012
Edgy MD replied to Edgy MD's topic in New York Mets Talk
I was kinda counting on him to help me move. -
There's also --- and this is quite speculative --- maybe a cautionary tale about entering the market with one foot. Omar set his sights from the beginning on the second-best slugging outfielder that offseason, perhaps hoping there'd be a less aggressive market for him and the Mets could get 85% of the production at 70% of the financial commitment. The Holliday/Bay Case (and wouldn't we all like to visit Holliday Bay?) might be cited in suggesting to a future GM that if you're going to be a bear, be a great big bad-ass bear. Maybe one with wings and gills to breathe under water.

I remember a two-homer game against the Bronx Menace as well.

Originally drafted by the Mets back in 2000. Apparently Steve Phillips' people left that file laying around. What's his wife's name? What's she like?

Ooooh. More conflation.

I conflate: Walt Weiss and Mike Bordick. One was a first round draft pick, the other a rare big leaguer who initially signed after going undrafted. Yet I conlate.

Yeah, I mean, he shouldn't walk away with any less, but buyouts happen all the time, and somehow both parties are able to convince themselves it's to their advantage.

More interesting than memories is what this ultimately means. A pessimistic point of view: Resigning Wright and Dickey was explicitly laid out by Alderson as priorities 1 and 1B for the offseason. Maybe moving on to this complex maneuver suggest negotiations are going nowhere on those fronts. An optimistic point of view: Demonstrating competitive seriousness was certainly hinted at by both Wright and Dickey as something of a pre-requisite for getting them to sign. That's largely a cliche that most everybody invokes, but maybe shedding Bay is Sandy demonstrating the organization's competitive seriousness.

Well, one might argue that they never really had Bay fill anything in the first place.

Well, Josh's life sure looks like 100% blast. Of course, best wishes to her and her cheeky bff when they hit 30 and realized youth and beauty are fleeting and the party has to end, but they sure look to be having a time of it now, or whenever, you know, back in the MySpace days.

So somebody decides it's a good idea to remake ...
Edgy MD replied to Frayed Knot's topic in Film Review Forum
I would think that, unlike the Soviets, the North Koreans would have a hard time occupying a portion of the US for very long. The Soviets were an empire. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is a heavily militarized, but otherwise small and very undeveloped rouge state that we could devastatingly counter pretty quickly. I imagine the Chinese, Japanese and South Koreans would privately love it if NKs provoked the US. A Chinese invasion repelled by the cast of Friday Night Lights --- now there's a solid jingoism movie.
