  1. Doing some bouncing around, I just stumbled upon the unknown (to me) factoid that Bowie Kuhn was named The Sporting News Sportsman of the Year for 1983. I'm sure Kuhn was a lovely guy who loved baseball, but I can think of few moments in his career where he was much more than a reed blown down buy the winds of time. I imagine a career as long as his had its highlights, but what happened in 1983 that made his legacy suddenly stand up above, I dunno, Cal Ripken, Dale Murphy, LaMarr Hoyt, John Riggins, Tony Dorsett, Phil Mahre, Eamonn Coghlan, Bird, Magic, Dr. J, Larry Holmes, or Wayne Gretzky? Was that the beginning of some awesome new contract that promised to end labor strife forever? Was that the year that he appeared to eradicate drugs from the sport? Was he just really really cozy with the editors and/or publisher?
  2. Mets, having fielded their share of offers for Dickey, have supposedly returned to the negotiating table with him, sources tell ESPN. If I were Jon Niese, I'd be climbing Kilimanjaro NOW!!!! OE: Jon Heyman and CBS Sports has them only six million apart, which is the kind of gap that can be bridged by a performance bonus or two.
  3. I don't know if any ballpark can be friendlier to Nick Swisher than YSIII. The Orioles are pursuing him also, so he's just a blessed hitter when it comes to finding friendly parks. But seriously, based on his propensity to slump away every post-season with the Yankees, baseball fans everywhere should celebrate Nick Swisher Day. I hope he signs with the Orioles and brutalizes the heck out of the Yankees and adds a post-season for the ages on top. (Unless he's playing the Mets.)
  4. Or absorb all the DH's into a new Apollo program.
  5. I know it's hard to look directly at that photo, but look again and check yourself for a pulse. White shirt is a chick --- former Solid Gold sweetie Lucinda Dickey.
  6. Regarding Reynolds, I'm a little curious where the Orioles are gonna turn for firstbasin'. Chris Davis lost the job last year, but ended up doin' a lot of DHin'. Maybe Davis returns to first and Lucas Duda ends up at DH with a bird on his hat. I dunno. It'll be curious to see if the Orioles go for Morse or LaRoche.
  7. Ho, ho, yes!! Take it with a grain of salt and a stocking of coal, certainly.
  8. Clarification seems to suggest I have the lineup wrong Santa: John Franco Elf: Ike Davis Elf: R.A. Dickey
  9. Ike Davis (our first Jewish Santa?) is getting the call this year as the Mets' Father Christmas. Adam Rubin reports that Reindeer Antlers Dickey will be riding sidesaddle, somehow breaking Anna Benson's mark as the sexiest elf in Mets history. If you're of a mind to believe "home for Christmas" = "home for the year," you are free to conclude that hard-partying Ike and lame-duck R.A. will survive the offseason.

Yup. - it could mean that the Rangers need to now trade for pitching since they didn't get the pitcher they wanted - or it means they really want to trade for pitching so they'll have the cushion to trade away other pitching for the likes of Upton - or it means they'll be more likely to throw the money not spent on Greinke towards resigning Hamilton and will have less need for Olt's bat Or maybe it means none of that. What do I know? It may also mean that Dickey's agents have just seen a whole bunch o' dollar signs, and their bargaining with the Mets just got a little harder. Or it may mean that a team may be less inclined to grab a Dickey, because signing an extension with him just became a tougher proposition. Or, it may mean that a team might desire Dickey more, because you feel even more intensely that you've got to take a Cy Young winner for a single year at five millions whenever you can, and worry about the future later.
  11. Good job. Sorry I failed to participate. My moving cut into my time when this started, but I should've gotten around to it. Has a save leader ever done so poorly in our rankings?
  12. Wiggum. I say Wiggum.
  13. I actually just sat through The Spy Who Loved Me a few weeks back. As Bond has too often been about the lastestness in style, almost all Bond films seem dated years later. While most agree that the Connery ones are the best, I think it's more that Connery was the coolest cat to play the roll, but the films themselves seem boring on review. I remember the Moore ones being funnier --- Roger playing against the absurdity of the character --- but most of the zexy ladies come across years later like overpainted tarts. And the cuts back from action to romance seem bouncy and haphazard. I guess you're supposed to get caught up in the event --- this time we go to Paris and Honolulu! --- that you're supposed to forgive how stupidly convoluted the plots all are. But years later, when there's nothing cutting-edge about the style, the cars, the chicks, the wierdo villian or anything --- the emptiness of the plots is just disengaging. Old Bond films --- like decades-old mildewed copies of GQ and Vogue --- are best viewed as curiosities.
  14. I'm getting that "Arthur Christmas" is a weak pun on "Father Christmas" --- Santa Claus's more popular British title. Tell me please that the film has a higher standard for jocularity than is indicated by this title.

The inclusion of the toilet in the bathroom self-portrait is just one of the many things wrong with this picture. The fact that he couldn't get a shot of himself in a mirror without avoiding the toilet and shower tub tells me that he's showing off his manflesh to the ladies while in the lower minors, living with someone on a fixed income --- the handle in the shower stall suggests a semi-handicapped senior --- forced by circumstances to take jackass, flat-brimmed Mets borders in.

As Jordany's former adoptive parent, I have to be honest. This isn't the first douchey-self-portrait-in-a-non-Mets-cap of his I've found laying around.
  17. There isn't a worried little aardvark?
  18. Man, Young and Texas belong togetta.
  19. Yeah sheesh, I'm sure there's little point to them to go cooking the books on their stats. I'm not really arguing for WAR, but just pointing out that a modest investment can buy them a game or two, which still is the idea.
  20. Agreed, but then it's still a question of Thole and who else.
  21. I don't think that the Mets are going to see a difference between being a winner or a loser based on which catcher they attain for 2013 vs 2012...but still, they have got to come up with a plan for the future at that position...Mets catchers have pretty much sucked for a long time, with no end in sight...They've been so bad that Omir Santos offensive/defensive stats from 2009, look pretty solid in comparison... I see it as the relative failure of the Mets catching delegation makes it even more likely that it's a place that meaningful improvement can mean a real difference to the team. I mean... what I means to say is... check out the bb-r WAR numbers for the Mets catching staff. Josh Thole: -0.1 Mike Nickeas: -0.9 Kelly Shoppach: 0.1 Rob Johnson: -0.2. In theory, just by getting replacement level production from behind the plate, the Mets are already 1.1 wins better than 2012. If they get somebody in a Mets uniform playing decently back there, maybe two or three wins. That's a pretty short road to a meaningful improvement.

    What's nonsense and foolishness?
  23. We can improve on Nickeas 2012. Maybe we already have. But if we don't think we can do that, there's little reason to get up in the morning. For Terry, for Nickeas himself, or for any of us.

Except the baby's black. If this was a script treatment, tell me that three or four studios wouldn't pay good money for the option.
