  1. Let's talk about that 50-game suspension, Marlon. It was Tamoxifen. Tamoxifen combats gynecomastia, Byrd said Friday, referring to the ailment that involves enlarged breasts in males. The way that it was written last year by everybody, everyone called it a steroid. It is a banned substance. It was something that I took, not knowing because of the name that I was taking, me not checking the [banned] list for the first time in my career. Ive said it before: I think you have to be an idiot to test positive. And I was one of those idiots. It was something stupid. I was not trying to cheat. It was a banned substance. It was not a steroid. But, again, you take something on the banned list, youre going to get caught. Oh, that's OK then.
  2. While that's certainly true. If he logs 215 innings, he will certainly have had a productive year, and the Mets would likely have had a profitable year. He still would be unlikely to be worth that money, but the sting would be lessened.
  3. If he pitches 215 innings, a lot will have worked out well, and it'd likely be a good problem to have.
  4. "And we're so happy today to have Mike Piazza! ... and his pack o' mooks!"
  5. Yeah, Perfect Game it is.
  6. Jim Duquette and daughter recovering well.
  7. I don't know much about media strategy, but I find Sandy's highly technical ambiguity to be fascinating. Putting little to no personal stock in any of it, I find that it reads as sort of an Ivy League version of Stengelian doublespeak. He stuffs a bunch of learned polysyllabics into a paragraph that amounts to "It could certainly go this way, but I wouldn't expect that if I were you, because you might find it goes another way. We have a number of very specific things intricately mapped out and might do none of them, which would certainly be the result of a cohesive and comprehensive strategy. Was that helpful to you?"
  8. Well, you were directing it at me and I'm really fatigued with being addressed like I'm his surrogate.

A new scoreboard? Maybe they used the new found money designing those neat Mr. Met hats. Is bitter sarcasm just the only way you address me any more? Yes, as you acknowledge more politely to Grimm, for some reason, the team can add salary through a trade. That can happen before July.
  10. Every year, I think about this a lot, and every year, I think I more or less have everybody in place, and every year, am disappointed to realize I have everything utterly and completely wrong. Going with my guesses in the roster thread, the only guy I got right was Anthony Recker in 20. Now I have to seriously update over there. Josh Satin and Omar Quintanilla should have been layups, but no! Damn you, new equipment manager guy. Congratulations to Ben Grimm. I don't know how the heck he got Jamie Hoffman in 80. Spring usually has poor sadsacks dressed in the 60s and 70s, but the only guys I think of getting wide receiver numbers are guys who weren't initially invited to camp, but get to float up for one day near the end of camp to round out a travel roster. Dylan Owen --- there's a guy who'd look good in an 80-89 jersey. Travis Ozga and Mark Cohoon, too.
  11. They can certainly add payroll or invest in the team otherwise before July.
  12. A year is still the standard, but pop culture bios often have a short enough shelf life as it is, so that figure could be contracted, and the paperback version could very likely be out by Christmas. In the age of digital publishing destroying the book, "standard" isn't a very meaningful term. Everybody is trying to find a new model.

  14. Yeah, I agree that the cordial gentlemanliness may have been a mask on a more conniving and entitled person, but it makes whimpering about situations years (or even decades) later --- with the benefit of reviewing several rounds of proofs for consideration of how they read --- more perplexing. I mean the period when you're waiting for Hall of Fame enshrinement is generally the time an athlete who came across as petulant and self-centered during his career puts on a suit, smiles, plays charity golf tournaments, says nice things, and tries to establish himself as a man of character in ways he never bothered to doing during his career. Piazza appears to be turning that paradigm on its ear.

  16. That just comes out as somebody else's voice, doesn't it?
  17. Creating, what's known in the design world, as the "infinite regression."
  18. Seeing as how Wright has explicitly taken pains to model himself after Jeter, it's unavoidable.
  19. Strange turn of events, with the closer coming up hurt the day after Parnell gets a vote of confidence as a potential closer. 20. We keep coming around to that. I know folks want the Wilpons to be divested under any circumstances, but that doesn't make the situations the same from Bud Selig's or baseball's perspective.
  21. I don't think the book hurts him. I expect the writers to be as lazy as ever and not string Piazza up, seeing as he didn't do what they were hoping he'd do and save them the trouble by stringing himself up. He admitted what was already known, if not widely circulated, and reverberations so far have been minor. Unless somebody has the noive to take him to task for being an anti-immigrant tool, or he makes a nuisance of himself by campaigning like Gary Carter, he's in on next year's vote. Book it.

  25. Yeah, if you're going to have interleague play, best to have if all year. You have to with odd numbers of teams in each league.
