  1. I'm not that sure that it should be impossible. I mean, it may take eight or more starters to get there, but...
  2. There's never been a baseball book called Home of the Brave, and it's strange that nobody picked up on that before publication of Piazza's book; I mean, if you're going to criticize an ex-teammate -- and probably a fellow Hall of Famer someday -- you'd probably want to make sure you get something like that right. Probably not as strange as all that. I'm really starting to wonder if this book is 100% nonsense.
  3. I figure d'Arnaud being a catcher with knee injury history should curb at least a little of anybody's ranking enthusiasm for him.
  4. That's Anthony in that scary photo, yes.
  5. Anthony Recker's airbrushed wife-to-be Kelly:
  6. Kirk and the future missus, Bethany Bridges:
  7. It's a big tank these days.
  8. It's all unfolding perrrfectly.
  9. I left boy scouts before doing the requisite work for my Eagle Scout promotion. #VinScullyIsCrushingMe
  10. Way to represent, Mets fans!
  11. Can't stumble across a Mets article by the Wall Street Journal's Jared Diamond, without briefly forgetting that he's not that Jared Diamond, and I'm not about to read about the Mets in the context of evolutionary anthropology or some other multidisciplinary scientific construction. Funny thing is that even after I realize it's a different cat, I'm still inferring an increased level of gravity thanks to the big-thinking cap I put on as soon as a I read the byline. Anyhow, Jared writes this morning that the key to a good bullpen isn't investing money, or directing your best young arms there, or sharing closer duties, but rather getting as much as you can from your starters, and so leaning into your relief staff as little as possible. I agree! And I would have agreed if he had any other name. (Well, maybe not Bill Madden.)
  12. The buzz makes it sound inevitable that the captaincy is going to happen this spring. Only open questions seem to be who signs off on it and whether he wears a C.
  13. Donn, Clendenon, though, faced him at 10 years old.
  14. I would think that 20 teams down there, each with 200 or more players to look after, would pool their resources, buy an MRI machine, and set up a central clinic or two to share.
  15. Swan Swan H wrote: I have no idea what will happen between now and April 1, but a guy like Wheeler making it onto the Opening Day roster is just the kind of feel-good story that a team like the Mets can use. Set expectations low and you'll never be disappointed. Yeah, I always thought announcing that a guy wasn't expected to make the roster was doing just that.
  16. Maddening that teams still send these guys home.

  18. Do you really believe his decision was based on personal physical cowardice?
  19. It's notable to me that they remember who else got booed. That's hard.
  20. Yeah, I wouldn't read that as carved in stone.
  21. I'll never forget last year when I got booed on Opening Day. Jason Bay and I got booed on Opening Day, and I'm thinking, 'Man, this is what it's come to, I guess.' You're not human if it doesn't bother you." --- Mike Pelfrey
  22. Go shatter a glass ceiling in honor of Edith Houghton.
  23. David Wright on why labeling him "our Jeter" was too kind. I got a chance to pick his brain a little bit. He was awesome. It solidifies the reason that I kind of look up to him the way that I do, is the way that he treated me during the WBC. Don't eat the fruit in the basket, David! It'll make you... intangible!
  24. Why should he care about book sales? He got his money. The publisher, on the other hand, should care for the same reason... Could you imagine anybody anywhere who wouldn't have bought Mike Piazza's book, but for the promotional uptick he got from doing a hostile interview bomb with Murray Chass? That guy so needs a hug.
