Yeah, they do shag, but not competitively. Fielding grounders and covering first is part of what they do for a living. It might be worthwhile for a manager to take one or two spry young starters and suggest they take infield practice at first on their off days instead of shagging. And then when one of them pull a hammy or shatters a shinbone, they come and beat me down for suggesting it. Anyhow, I played it that way in an internet simulation and R.A. Dickey acquitted himself admirably.

You won't hate yourself for watching it. You won't hate yourself for missing it. For research purposes, you get a good weird shot of Robert Downey either at the end of the dark years or the beginning of his revitalization. It's as much a filmed play as a film, so you may like it.

Let's check 1991-2000 for gigglez: 1991: #11 --- Shawn Estes (7.4 career WAR) #60 --- Chris Pritchett (-0.8) 1992: #11 --- Derek Wallace (0.0) #60 --- Ritchie Moody (0.0) 1993: #11 --- Daron Kirkreit (0.0) #60 --- Brad Fullmer (4.4) 1994: #11 --- Mark Farris (0.0) #60 --- Jerry Whittaker (0.0) 1995: #11 --- Mike Drumright (0.0) #60 --- Jeremy Blevins (0.0) 1996: #11 --- Adam Eaton (0.8) #60 --- Randi Mallard (0.0) 1997: #11 --- Chris Enochs (0.0) #60 --- Jose Nicolas (0.0) 1998: #11 --- Josh McKinley (0.0) #60 --- Jermaine Van Buren (-0.6) 1999: #11 --- Ryan Christianson (0.0) #60 --- Ryan Ludwick (10.7) 2000: #11 --- Dave Krynzel (0.2) #60 --- Freddie Bynum (-1.4) Wow! What a miserably un-meaningful data set I selected! But to the extent that it can be construed as meaningful, #60 wins, 12.3 WAR to 8.4! Congratulations to all Draft Position #60 supporters everywhere!

Dumb question: If you were forced by an extra-inning war of attrition to put a pitcher in at another defensive position, is there a reasonable case that can be made for using him at first base instead of at a corner outfield spot? I mean the skills more resemble what he's regularly called on and trained to do --- field short-hop grounders and take throws at first while finding the bag with his feet --- as the fifth infielder that he usually is. The usual move of sticking the guy in left is largely a manager's bow to his own sense of mortality --- he can't hurt me if he doesn't have to field the ball and the leftfielder is less likely to field a ball. But while that's understandable emotionally, is it the only option? Does your answer change if the alternative is to put the pitcher in the outfield and to move to first an outfielder with no professional experience there or anywhere in the infield?

And it was a homerun. Guy batted .063 with runners in scoring position. That's 1-16, but his one hit still didn't plate anybody. On the other hand, he did have one walk, one hit by pitch, and two successful sacrifice bunts.

Looked it up. Ruddy Lugo was a paper Met. Got a callup, but not an appearance. How did I forget that?

Wish You Were Here: Continuing Careers of Ex Mets - 2013
Edgy MD replied to a topic in New York Mets Talk
Wow, Giants have a great strategy, sending guys to the Mets, watching 'em stink, and bringing 'em back on the cheap. We tried that play years back with Shinjo, but it didn't work so well. -
I guess I'm his GM. Unlike Sandy, I kept him around for 2013. Near the end of the season, I realized his poorly rated ass never got used by Kingsport and their bloated roster. I briefly promoted him up to Savannah to get his five plate appearances in. Now he has a southern fried RBI to tell his kids about back in Antwerp.

Well, my testosterone levels are falling even as I type this, but if you're looking for video sexuality, some younger and hornier folks than myself find that Brooklyn Decker and Rhianna push their buttons just fine.

Wait a minute... did you just use the term "lady love"? You're a little off with Big Fish. Billy Crudup plays the son. McGregor is Albert Finney's younger self. Otherwise excellent summations. Thanks. There's a handful of films here I haven't seen, but I feel like I did from the previews and their incursions into the general zeitgeist. It's funny how my readings of films I didn't see jibes with your summations after having actually seen them.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Its an Amazin gamble! The Mets owners want to roll the dice on building a Las Vegas-style casino next to Citi Field to recoup some of the $162 million for which team brass are still on the hook following the Bernie Madoff Ponzi-scheme debacle, plans obtained by The Post reveal. While team owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz are still having trouble opening their tight pockets for high-priced free agents, that didnt stop their development arm, Sterling Equities, from betting on a proposal that called for bringing a massive casino with gaming tables and slots, a 500-room, full-service hotel, 1.8 million square feet of retail and other amenities to the Willets Point development site in Queens. The Southampton-based Shinnecock Indian Nation signed on to operate the casino, and the Wilpons and partners even offered the city $100 million for the 62-acre site, according to the development teams proposal, which was first obtained by project opponents Willets Point United and NYC Park Advocates. This will be a place about fun for families, sports fans and thrill seekers alike, the proposal says. [it] will attract millions of visitors from the New York area and around the world and will serve as New Yorks newest and most unique entertainment destination. Even as he planned to let it all ride on the glitzy casino, Wilpons team has lowered payroll to about $93 million this season, down from $143 million in 2011, when the team lost $70 million. With live-dealer casino gambling currently illegal in New York, except on tribal lands, the Wilpons and partner Related Companies were awarded a consolation prize. In June, the Bloomberg administration handed them 23 of the 62 acres of city-owned land they sought in the September 2011 casino proposal most of which is now used for parking to build a $3 billion retail and entertainment complex without a casino. The revelation that the Mets owners want a casino comes as the state Legislature is considering a constitutional amendment to allow Las Vegas-style table gaming. And Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has begun talking up a casino at Willets Point or Coney Island. Gov. Cuomo has so far said hed support only three casinos upstate for the foreseeable future if the amendment passes. City officials pulled the casino from the Willets Point plan partly because they thought the government-approval process would take too long, sources said. However, a city spokesman declined to comment when asked if the city would push for a casino there if the state Legislature eventually backs it. The Mets declined to comment, but a spokesman for Sterling-Related said its focused on the project the mayor endorsed. Although Sterling Equities wouldnt directly operate or build the casino, any investment by the Mets owners in such a venture could raise eyebrows, considering Major League Baseballs tough antigambling policies. A league spokesman said that MLB would need to get all of the details of the agreement and that it would ultimately be Commissioner Bud Seligs call. Selig and Wilpon are longtime friends. MLB in December 2011 gave the cash-strapped Mets its blessing to take out a $40 million bank loan even as the team had to pay back a $25 million loan the league gave them a year earlier. The Mets have since settled its league loan. The Bloomberg administration says its all in on the current Willets Point plan, which isnt expected to break ground for at least a year. The developers first have to clear out a bunch of junkyards that are on part of the site. The submission that included a gaming use was quickly dismissed as unviable, a spokesman for the citys Economic Development Corp. said. A different plan is now moving through the approvals process for a project that will create a dynamic new destination, hundreds of units of affordable housing, and thousands of jobs. Geoffrey Croft of NYC Park Advocates is no fan of either version of the plan, saying the project is destined to plague surrounding neighborhoods with various problems including overwhelming traffic. Regarding the original 900,000-square-foot casino plan, he said, its hard to think of anything more corrupt than putting a casino in the middle of low-income communities. This is satire, right? That's some professionally cheesy writing. I can't believe I fell for a headline that says, "Mets Owners Want..." when the lede said "Mets owners wanted... ."
-
Rubin, in an article I can't read, reports that the Mets' owners want a casino next to CitiField. Without reading anything but the headlines, my first reaction is booo! Like Moss Eisley, a casino in New York would be a hive of scum and villiany. My second reaction is... booo! Baseball's high and mighty position with gambling is impossible to maintain when owners get their thumbs in gambling's pie, or when gaming and the games are held in such close proximity, or with related landlords.
-
Yeah, how 'bout that? A lot of cheesy action is pretty bunched up there. My main issues with Avengers are in the thread devoted to it. The battlefield layouts were confusing, there were plot holes that could have been easily explained with a tossed-off line or two here or there but they just didn't bother. The characters were just more appealing. There's a reason Iron Man got a lot more money than Captain America or Thor to appear. Poeple love those characters on the page but these actors haven't exactly caught folks' imaginations with how they've brought the characters off the page. They're glorified ink. The one other guy who kinda did was Norton, and he didn't come back. Avengers was certainly more ambitious and I give them credit for that, but well, so was The Hobbit. They just didn't get there for me.
-
I bet you didn't know, or more likely, briefly noted it and forgot it, but the Mets were the first big league team to sign a player out of Belgium. Unfortunately, after acquitting himself respectably in the DSL for parts of two summers, the team gave up on him a few weeks into rookie ball. I noticed him because he's got a profile in Out of the Park Baseball --- a bad, bad profile. I don't know what's worse, that the computer could imagine a ballplayer with a such a terrible future ahead of him (players are rated from 1 to 20 on their skills), or that once generating that profile, it could link it to an actual person.

Going to the bullpen puts Familia in a better position to crack the opening day roster, at least unless/until they sign that Lyon guy. Check out Mejia and Familia, born a day apart in the Dominican Republic. It's a challenge... comparable to the challenge in the second half of the sentence which you didn't excerpt, Johnny Sarcasmo. Rubin just posted a note that the team will be working Familia as a reliever and Mejia as a starter to start spring training.

More guys --- particularly reasonably capable ones --- are better, whether in the outfield or bullpen. I'd certainly not complain if they were to acquire a decent outfielder today. I imagine the challenge is similar to find an outfielder that outperforms Cowgill and to find a reliever that outperforms McHugh or Greg Burke or Elvin or somebody.
