  1. Terry Collins took the mound six times as a minor leaguer, and walked away with a 1.00 ERA over nine innings.
  2. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Some ankle sprains can take 5 or 6 weeks to heal properly. It's crazy how they took out Reese Havens with the first swipe of the knife. Also chiseled off Josh Satin --- who I tend to believe would at this point in his career have the same big league job security as Turner had his timing been more fortuitous. It's funny how many big league managers, so many of whom were marginal but versatile infielders, fall in love with their marginal but versatile infielders. I like those numbers you put up, and I think he'd get there given the chance, but I also suspect this sprain can futz up the first half of his season, and by that time he'll be passed on the depth chart by Valdespin and Flores. Terry is a duck of lameness and he can afford only so much loyalty. .244 / .292 / .368 // .660 in 75 plate appearances.
  3. It's a big coupla days for him. If his ankle doesn't respond, he could be on the DL to open the season. If it does, he'll likely make the team. If Wright or Murphy can't get on the field --- especially Murphy, who hasn't appeared yet --- then Turner opens the season in the starting lineup. It's like football camp, where you don't have to worry about trimming the roster, so much as letting attrition do it for you.
  4. This is going to be one strange opening day in New York. Both teams are at home and the highest-profile healthy dude will be... C.C. Sabathia? He's starting late, too, though. I guess it's Cano. But he still has to get through spring training without getting suspended. Plus he has to survive the deadly World Baseball Classic.
  5. It can take a long time to beat into submission. There are likely some bumps ahead.
  6. I'm with the Kev. I think Valdy and his junk pretty much cemented their place on the roster today.
  7. That winter, the Mets acquired George Foster, and the Yanks acquired Ken Griffey and Dave Collins. The Newsday backpage headline at the start of spring training: "NOW PLAYING IN NEW YORK: REDS."
  8. OK, Marcum, Familia, and Murphy I'm accepting as more likely than not out for opening day. Wright, I'm waiting 'til tomorrow on. I'm trying to remember the last Met player who looked as much like a coach as Atchison will if he makes the team. Is Familia's overbite really that glorious? 9. I just want to apologize for all youse who posted in this thread. Frayed Knot, themetfairy, Ashie... even Willets who posted though you may not have seen the film... I'm sorry. You told me this plane was going down and going down hard and I climbed on board anyhow.
  10. Turner's a big admirer of Jeter.
  11. How about films where the environmental reality is pretty much stable, but the protagonist him- or herself turns out not to be who they think they are? Examples include... spoilers... Angel Heart The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Maybe Blade Runner if you believe one or two of the eleven cuts circulating of this film are meant to imply in the end that Decker is a replicant. Maybe Total Recall, depending on your read of the ending, but I guess it qualifies one way or the other.
  12. Poo-poo ka-ka. Robert Zemeckis may want to reconsider Back to the Future IV. Go for it. I mean... it would be a better idea than Flight II.
  13. In Miami, dozens are reported dead after a spontaneous and toxic airhorn burnoff. Officials are reluctant to release a specific death toll, but are quick to blame a Bronx-based baseball fan posting on the Internet.
  14. Agreed. What's a truer representation of America than people who aren't in shape?
  15. Yeah, and break up the Royals already.
  16. And I mean to suggest that Tejada fills those needs at a comparable or better level to Harrelson's fulfillment of two generations ago. We certainly have the tools to compare players across eras.
  17. Suggestion is that he first contracted it in Connecticut.
  18. I don't mean to suggest he was all that similar, tool-wise. I only mean to suggest contemporary haters have less tolerance for players who persist at a position on solid but un-spectacular defense and modest but consistent offense.
  19. This is interesting, and yeah, scary. I got the idea that he didn't seem much like himself the last year and had just concluded that his natural guardedness had grown to the point where he had lost interest in being publicly engaged. My friend has been going through later-stage Lyme Disease and it sucks, because parts of her personality are just unavailable from day to day or week to week. She's smart and fun and attractive and can't sustain a job or relationship. Darn ticks.
  20. It is fucking April, David. In fact, it's October for America. Anytoots, why isn't Ben Zobrist in there? Willie Bloomquist is a nice guy and all, but... And what's the deal with Longoria? He discover he has an uncle in Poland or something? DO I HAVE TO START PUNCHING?!
  21. Also two hit batsmen and three wild pitches. It was a Zambranoesque nightmare of a start. If Gee doesn't play out, he doesn't, but you had better have a more ready-to-wear backup plan than Snydergard.
  22. If Buddy Harrelson was the Mets shortstop today, he might get hatfuls of hate.
  23. His comparables through age 22 include some darn good players, including 2/3 of a poem. [*:39g4mdc4]Ozzie Guillen (963)[/*:m:39g4mdc4] [*:39g4mdc4]Mark Lewis (960)[/*:m:39g4mdc4] [*:39g4mdc4]Joe Tinker (958)[/*:m:39g4mdc4] [*:39g4mdc4]Granny Hamner (957)[/*:m:39g4mdc4] [*:39g4mdc4]Johnny Evers (956)[/*:m:39g4mdc4] [*:39g4mdc4]Mike Caruso (954)[/*:m:39g4mdc4] [*:39g4mdc4]Bucky Dent (951)[/*:m:39g4mdc4] [*:39g4mdc4]Donie Bush (949)[/*:m:39g4mdc4] [*:39g4mdc4]Alfredo Griffin (949)[/*:m:39g4mdc4] [*:39g4mdc4]Whitey Witt (946)[/*:m:39g4mdc4][/list:o:39g4mdc4] Not exactly Ernie Banks and Robin Yount, but not the kind of players you sneeze at either. And of course, the first guy is the one who was so utterly lacking in Ruben's best asset --- a good eye for the strike zone.
