  5. Brownie, you're doing a great job.
  6. Yesterday's report had a scout calling him the best outfielder in the division. Not that we want to carry a bat that's utterly unready, or hamper any possible development he's got left by putting him in a position to fail, but a superior defender in the middle could help mask a lot of defensive flaws in the team's lineup.
  7. Yeah, the run-differential-based tiebreakers have led to a lot of nonsense. During one of the qualifying games, a team scored a run to go ahead with two out in the eighth, and then realized they put themselves at a disadvantage, because they needed to win by six or something to advance, so they needed the bottom of the ninth.
  8. Since we all opted either to not pay attention or not comment, let's let Adam Rubin catch us up. Mets 9, Astros 6: Another highlight catch March, 9, 2013 MAR 9 5:45 PM ET By Adam Rubin | ESPNNewYork.com PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Lucas Duda went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Jeremy Hefner tossed three scoreless innings as the Mets beat the Houston Astros, 9-6, Saturday at Tradition Field. Marlon Byrd, Duda and John Buck all doubled in a three-run third inning that chased Astros starter Alex White. Game tidbits: WEB GEMS: Matt den Dekkers collection of highlight-reel plays, which included taking a homer away from Washingtons Anthony Rendon earlier in spring training, has a new addition. Den Dekker slid on the warning track in left-center to rob Trevor Crowe of an extra-base hit in the third inning. Although den Dekker is very likely ticketed for Triple-A Las Vegas to open the season, a scout assigned to the Mets said the prospect might be the top outfielder in the NL East -- from a defensive perspective. Or, at least on par with B.J. Upton and Denard Span. Like Ozzie Smith out there, the scout said, referring to the defensive prowess of the Hall of Fame shortstop. Smith, it turns out, was one of den Dekkers favorite players growing up. I think it was the flips that he did, den Dekker said. Meanwhile, Crowe had an unlucky day. In his next at-bat, he appeared poised to single to right field. But Ike Davis ranged to his right to stop the hard grounder. Davis then shoveled the ball on his backhand while on the ground to Darin Gorski covering first to retire Crowe. HEFTY PERFORMANCE: Hefner erased a Fernando Martinez single in the first inning by coaxing a double play from Carlos Pena. He allowed only one other batter to reach, on a walk, in three scoreless innings. Hefner appears destined for the Opening Day roster -- and a spot in the rotation if Johan Santana has a prolonged absence. The Mets do not need a fifth starter until April 7, buying time for Santana to be ready without breaking camp with the team. Hefner now has a 2.61 Grapefruit League ERA. Obviously it hinges on Johan, how he feels and that type of thing, Hefner said about working out of the rotation. I can only control me and control my approach and my bullpens. And thats what Im going to continue to do and let Johan rehab or whatever he needs to do to get ready to pitch. HERES CARSON: Left-handed reliever Robert Carson surrendered a leadoff walk, then a two-run homer to Pena in the fourth. Pedro Feliciano is the primary contender to join Josh Edgin as a second lefty in the Mets bullpen. The likelihood is Carson gets more seasoning with Las Vegas regardless of Felicianos fate, though. With Frank Francisco likely to open the season on the DL, Bobby Parnell will close. Parnell should be joined in the bullpen by Brandon Lyon, LaTroy Hawkins, Scott Atchison and Edgin. The Mets may carry only one left-hander (rather than Carson, Scott Rice, Gorski or Aaron Laffey) if Feliciano does not make it, which could pave the way for both Jeurys Familia and submariner Greg Burke to make the Opening Day roster. Regardless, scouts have raved about Familias conversion to full-time reliever and feel like he is a near-lock for the Opening Day bullpen. Having abandoned starting, Familia is now exclusively working from the stretch and has found a consistent release point. OOOPS: Parnell, working consecutive days for the first time in spring training, was poised to again post a 1-2-3 inning Saturday. However, on a would-be game-ending play, Parnell committed an error and ultimately surrendered an unearned run. Terry Collins continues to rave about Parnell, including the fact that he sits in the bullpen all nine innings of Grapefruit League games, trying to get in the mindset of a closer. ON TAP: Bill Parcells is due to attend Sundays Mets-Cardinals game in Jupiter. The Mets plan to present Parcells with a signed jersey as a gift for being selected to the NFL Hall of Fame. Collins said the Mets will start having pitchers hit Wednesday, after a team day off.
  9. Mets signed Jenny Finch. You must've been ooffline.

Yeah, if that doesn't explode this, how about Torre's explanation that Hosner was already in Arizona? You wait for this opportunity for three years, commit all this money and resources trying to convince fans that it's meaningful, and you let three extra hours on a plane stop you? Meanwhile, Howard is having a torrid spring, with a 1.116 OpS.
  11. Documentary about a team of teenagers recruited to join skateboarding team in the early eighties, their beginnings just as the burgeoning pro-circuit is collapsing, and their re-inventing the sport as a skater-controlled punk underground scene, until the sport's re-emergence at the end of the decade. 12. Doing some digging, the suspension this winter was for not running a ball out. Dean Treanor was manager and he himself was replaced before the season was done. The 2009 suspension, I haven't got beyond "not following team rules." His manager was Edgar Alfonzo. The tee-shirt incident and subsequent tantrum, I think, we know all there is to know.
  13. You're struggling to understand why you should move past feelings that you've never held. That's a challenge for a writer.
  14. Thing is, if you read that article, DiComo is trying to build a case that Vds is moving beyond his past foolishness, getting money quotes from Wally Backman about how he's matured, and giving Jordany all the chance in the world to say the bland right things about doing what he's asked and working hard and anything to help the team and blahblahblah. So he's hardly being lazy, but the case against Jordany isn't his angle, so much as the case for him.
  15. There's nothing non-factual in d'Como's report. If you'd like to know the specifics of his infractions, I'd suggest you write d'C and ask, but it is an historical fact that he's been disciplined on more than one occasion. I hadn't known he was lobbying for a job in the organization.
  16. Specifics of minor league disciplinary actions generally don't get disclosed unless someone is willing to dig or press the point. Minor league beat reporters generally are on a just-get-me-the-game-facts-by-the-deadline mission, and the big-league guys who read the report of a the action coming over the wires have bigger fish to fry unless they recognize a name-brand prospect, which Valdespin never was. He had a two-week suspension from his Dominican winter ball club in December for insubordination. Particulars beyond that were undisclosed. Back in 2009, he started the season in Savannah, then was demoted to Gulf Coast and Brooklyn. He received a suspension that year also from Tony Bernazard.
  17. D'Arnaud has d'parted after getting plunked'.
  18. Well, I kind of think we got the serviceable major league catcher in exchange for a partly serviceable major league catcher (Thole) and an un-serviceable one (Nickeas). Don't forget the Wuilmer Becerra sauce, too, though, This trade is challenge enough to weigh without Martino trolling the waters with Niese. His source being two un-named foks, without even hinting as to their affiliations, doesn't give me confidence. Even the one quote he gets from the two sounds highly speculative.
  19. Or be superior at some level: a .333 batting average or a .410 OBP.
  20. I'd say a fair amount of the 1984 Cubs and 1988 Dodgers pitchers were having something akin to their career years.
  21. What about the waking up and finding out it was all just a dream or computer or something, only to have that final moment where a prop or character from the dream appears in the new supposedly authentic reality, so maybe it wasn't a dream at all! That's sort of the Time Bandits ending. Sort of. You get into TV, you get into every other Twilight Zone episode, seemingly. How 'bout that one where Picard lives a whole lifetime as a flute player in the space of a few seconds?
  22. That piece has a high pop culture reference-to-paragraph ratio.
  23. Toilet House is correct. Thirty-one-year-old John Tudor threw up 10 shutouts for the 1985 Cardinals, despite having only thrown four to that date in his career, with only two more waiting for him in the future. Fully 62.5% of his career shutouts took place in Whitey Herzog's power-mad blitz to the division and pennant. Even more, in fact, as he chalked another in the ill-fated World Series effort against Kansas City. Among the many amazing things about Dwight Gooden's amazing Cy Young Year of 1985 was that his year was so unimpeachable that he swept the voting, despite truly spectacular efforts from Tudor and Orel Hershiser.
  24. vtmet wrote: I thought that wins (for pitchers), runs/RBI (for batters) were "team" stats and the individual player/batter has no bearing on these outcomes... According to whom? Of course they have a bearing. These numbers are just deceptively circumstantially dependent, doesn't mean he or she doesn't have a big part in obtaining them, but players can only capitalize on the opportunities they are given, and these aren't equal.
  25. Last big leaguer to throw 10 shutouts in a season?
