  1. #949: Anthony Recker, trying to protect the dish, offering hope to a largely hopeless cause. It really is hard to believe we could do better than Nickeas when it comes to handsome backup catchers, but a fact is a fact.
  2. Sweet play by Uncle Scott.
  3. it was an elegant miss. Really, the outfielder probably should have been positioned deeper. Especially him.
  4. Well that's the added challenge of the situation. He might certainly have been farmed out if the team wasn't starved for options. Valdespin has plenty of experience but has established himself as erratic at the position. Turner has nice footwork around second and a decent stick but has very little horizontal range or much of an arm. Quintanilla is a defensible backup, but has little with regard to a future. Flores is reported to have Turner-like range. Havens is probably a little more stable, but not so good that he'd be anything less than a disaster if his bat doesn't turn it around. Brandon Hicks is huffing DL fumes, Adams isn't activated, and Bixler is riding AAA pine. Not much better in terms of options at Bingo or St. Lucie either. The plan is for him to hold down the fort there, and any decision they make is going to be with the long term in mind.
  5. He made a slick game-ending play just after I submitted that question, so I can only conclude that I motivated him, somehow.

  7. Gotta be something we don't know about Ruben, right? Somewhere among the dreadful spring, the brief period when the Mets were reportedly considering farming him out to start the season, and the head-seemingly-not-in-the game start he's having to this season, is the answer. What's going on, Ruben?
  8. Gowkill hits the homer he was supposed to hit with two out in the ninth yesterday.
  9. Let's lock it down and keep pouring it on.
  10. To me, the greater issue remains pulling effectively pitching starters, but it's early, it's coldy, yadda-yadda.
  11. That's probably tee'd up for a celebrity fashion rip job by Perez Hilton or some other professional snark machine, but outside of the highly indictable shark hat, I like that look right there. And I'm the furthest thiing from a Drew fan. I mean, it's a mess, but it's a comfortable fun eighties mess. I've danced with that girl. I think I went to Reggae Sunspassh 1988 with that girl. Wasn't Alyssa Milano a Marlin-lovin' big shot before she was a Dodger-lovin' big shot?
  12. Ceetar wrote: (sorry, separate second guess here) No, that's good. I'm kinda hoping this thread can be the season's catch-all post-game second-guess forensics thread. Stuff you may be still chewing on hours later or the next morning.
  13. Two out in the ninth and a pinch-hitter needed as the tying run. Why Turner and not Cowgill? I mean, if you want the better hitter, 'Gill's the one who is supposedly the starter. You're looking for the big blow, Terry's expressed enough appreciation of Cowgill's power for me to think he's more impressed by that aspect of his game than he is by Turner's. If you want a baserunner to get on and set up a good matchup for Baxter (as Gary suggested), well, Cow' has been the leadoff hitter. Turner's got two arguments going for him: (1) three hits the day before, and (2) perhaps his veteran aplomb will leave him less shaky than Cowgill as the potential last out of the game. Both are legit arguments, but I think Terry <3s Turner too much.
  14. Blue uniforms.
  15. That's some spicey sauce from Kirk.
  16. Man, the Mets really want me to buy Cholula sauce.
  17. He may have left the bases loaded, but... well he's really playing like a grinder. Tejada on the other hand...
  18. The 3-1 pitch was the opportunity.
  19. Absosnootly losing it.
  20. Ramos suddenly losing it.
  21. But the Metzkoviches are down 1-0 in the second. LOSING IS ALMOST NEVER A GOOD IDEA!
  22. There were others. Unpleasant others.
  23. Mike Morse has four homers in four games for the Mariners, or one more than he hit in 106 games during his first run with them from 2005-2008. It'd be kinda cool if the Mariners could turn things around quickly. If he, Kendry Morales and Jesus Montero can all get a little locked in, Felix Henandez could win a lotta lotta games.
  24. Word is that Hamilton was cheered wildly... after striking out.
  25. I just realized that the G-FaFiF run ended last night. Good job, Greg. Positively Siddyllic. But now we must move onward. When they tell the story of this winning streak, they will use these names in recounting its humble beginnings.
