  2. Oh, it opens with the two as children, featuring Mickey Rooney as the child "Blackie Gallagher" who grows up to be Clark Gable. That could... happen...
  3. Having worked our way through The Thin Man series, we settled this film also featuring Myrna Loy and William Powell, with a side dose of Clark Gable thrown in to make it love triangle with skinny mustaches on two of the corners. Two orphans grow up as unrelated brothers. One plays it straight and studies hard and becomes a virtuous DA with a bright future in politics. The other becomes a gambler, a stylish lowlife, a criminal, a rake. Despite their divergent paths, they retain their mutual affection, and one woman loves them both. Um... this is what movies used to sorta be like, but...
  4. Byrd's had some nice hits, and maybe that looks like a nice start, but it's feeling like fool's gold to me. Yesterday's hit was largely (mostly?) a byproduct of Mike Redmond's questionable management. His big knock on opening day was a pitch hanging in the strike zone after he chased two saptraps low and away. A better indicator, I fear, is his general participation in the strikeout parade in the middle of the order.
  5. Mets seemed to have a crap record last year (to my memory, anyhow) on Sundays. I associated this with the propensity to wear alternative uniforms for Sunday day games. It was as if going out dressed in something ill-considered (or at least unfamiliar) sapped their morale, and perhaps dampened the spirits of their supporters, who rooted for the Unfamiliarmets far less vociferously and helpfully. And of course losing on Sundays and frequently getting Monday off to spend a day as a loer (or even just hopping on a plain for a quick turnaround, but leaving town a loser) takes an additional toll on morale. It's one of those stupid ideas that has barely a grain of solid reasoning, but just enough that I can't let it go. So it's nice to see them get off to a good Sunday start this year to get me away from that fifty-cent logic and perhaps back toward the realm of ten-dollar logic. Brainthinking.
  6. Rainy-Assed Lara is starting 2013 the way he ended 2012, with six scoreless innings against Rome. He gave up a mere two hits in the 4-0 Savannah victory, striking out six Romans and walking one.
  7. We start off 1-for-1 in games Chris Young would have started.
  8. It's all hap'n'n' in Savannah this year.
  9. Great to hear that there were two baserunners in the Forum contingent.
  10. Really satisfying win, but I have to say that I very much disagree with Ronnie's comments in the ninth. The way to have a good season is not to win the one-run games and occasionally beat the other team's closer, as he asserts. The way to have a good season is too win the beatdowns. The former is commonly received wisdom, but I think it's been shown that the data doesn't back it up.

Do you remember when they used square plastic stickers for the NY on the batting helmet (like the ones on giveways in the 70s) and you could see it was a cheap decal/sticker? Late 70s I'm thinkin. Horrible. No, not a funny. I just saw it catch the light in a certain way and it didn't seem like fabric at all.
  12. Which way does your heart go in such a situation?
  13. Totally slept through my Laffey.
  14. Gee 3.54 Buck 2.55 Turner 1.47 Lyon 0.88 Edgin 0.62 Tejada 0.53 Rice 0.42
  15. HOLY CRAP?!! Mike Redmond, thank you!
  16. Look at that aggressive baserunning!
  17. Gimme a rally, and let it begin with Ruben.

  19. Beedi-beedi... get 'em, Buck!
  20. Man, some heartrending empty seats in the background.
  21. Did Tejada get a neighborhood call on that DP, there? Really cool to stay away from Stanton. Here's hoping the Fish don't have enough pen to get six more outs cleanly.
  22. Sometimes you can and should whine and get tossed. Sometimes its worth it. Gotta pick your spots. As a catcher I think Recker was wise to....JWA. Oh, sure and a borderline big leaguer at that. I don't think he should be arguing that call (though it was a ball). The rules are clear that you have no right to protest, but I think that the lateness of the call is something Terry might want to ask Wolfa bout.
  23. Man, memories of Rauch's tatts.
  24. Jim Wolf punching out Recker with a strangely late (and questionable) call.
