  1. We haven't had a good wrestling thread in a while.
  2. Dude, you're dating a waitress form Harpo's. Dress like that means something.
  3. [code:12ybhx07]ok, some of these are less than a decade[/code:12ybhx07] Yeah, well that's my point. A decade at the top of the rotation is more that can reasonably be expected of anybody. Things fall apart.

  5. My last Natcast. Haven't looked at them since then, except to confirm that Harper is still out, Strasburg is still looking for himself, and they haven't yet made the run at the Braves they hope to make. And that the fan base is still inflated with false entitlement. Important to confirm that, too.

Too much chance involved. That said, I had no idea Mike Pelfrey had formally changed his name. How sad. You know, thinking about this, it all depends on how you describe "decade" and "front of the rotation," but I think it doesn't take too much generosity to get to the point where Jerry Koosman and Sid Fernandez qualify here also.

Jon Olerud was benched in game three of the 1993 World Series. In a season in which he hit .363, reached .473, and OPS'd 1.072, they sat him during a World Series Game. One of their best players was DH Paul Molitor, and they had to play him somewhere during the National League games. Rather than say, "Hey, Ed Sprague, it's hard to be you," Cito Gaston got a little more democratic, benching Olerud one game, and Sprague the next two. Robbie Alomar got no games off and neither did Molitor. Olerud had the dignity and the humility to take that crap with nary a peep. But he couldn't find the grace to tolerate his neighbor's tree?
  10. These aren't large sample sizes. He's played convincing (sometimes superlative) big league shortstop, and he's hit like one. That ain't for the shitpile. It'll take more than one shortstop to get the team forward.
  11. Quintanilla has lost the job? I thought he had a nice series. As nice as you can do when you're oh for your last 13.
  12. Still: youre going to miss Marlon Byrd when hes gone. And who thought that was even possible back in March?
  13. Good news. The Nats don't have a sponsor for this series. Your redemption is at hand.

Keith/Tony Perez/Bill Terry Crappy neighbors all, I'd wager.

Put Jon Olerud on the 1973 Mets, and you'd be selling them real hard. But he's a damn crappy neighbor.
  16. Certainly. One thing he's done that makes you hope he can re-assert himself is achieve a .360 on-base percentage at the age of 21. You won't find too many shortstops in the history of ever who can claim that. (I be surprised if you found five.) It was only 376 plate appearances, but that's enough to me to suggest that ability was real. Hold his job? No, make him show you something. Make him earn it or Quintanilla lose it. It's a competitive world. But there's a compelling interest for the Mets to be rooting for him.
  17. Certainly, it has its weaknesses, but zero-sum theory has be be part of the conversation.

    Yeah, thanks. There's that.
  20. First base in 2013 has been covered by Ike Davis (52 games), Daniel Murphy (7 ), Justin Turner (7 also), Lucas Duda (5), and Josh Satin (another 5). All appeared in previous seasons, and by my reckoning, all debuted before Rottino. Lutz did, too.
  21. 1985 Royals weren't lucky? Sereiously, a division full of terrible teams where everybody's around .500 looks a lot like a division full of great teams where everybody's around .500. Sure, one can feast on those 72 extra-divisional games, but in general, t's hard to tell the difference.
  22. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Is there a fast way of telling, though the IMDB, what the earliest date is from which that the Mets have a .500+ record? I'll have to think about that. Maybe. (I'll assume you mean the UMDB, by the way.) I do, but if there's any Tom Cruise data that you find, let me know. Benjamin Grimm wrote: The Mets lost 3-2 to the Dodgers in Los Angeles on May 8, 1979. Since that loss, the Mets have a .500 regular-season record, 2,714 wins and 2,714 losses. GREAT! Let's keep pushing that back.

It makes lots of sense. First base may be the position that handles the most chances, but it's clear that he makes the least difference defensively of anybody on the field. Ergo, the least talented defenders (Lucas Duda) gravitate there. Put the worst shortstop --- say, Justin Turner --- at first, he's more or less going to handle it. Put the best firstbaseman --- Hernandez (there is no argument to made on this subject) --- and it's a long, long night ahead.
  24. Vic Sage wrote: it's still the big leagues, and you still have to play until your asses fall literally off "Literally"? Their asses have to fall "literally" off? Well, that's a game I'll happily miss, Harvey or no. The support underwear keeps things in place and spares you any eye-averting moments. Except with Valdespin, who flies commando. That could get ugly.
