1. Ron seems to be trying to enjoy the same giddy happiness that has Gary and Keith so ticked, but he has a sad little secret that he just can't get his mind off of.
2. So, that "streak" of having no starting pitchers earn a win -- it's like at a month now, isn't it? Came within one pitch. My real problem with Terry is that he seems to accept and understand and even embrace his role as a caretaker so well that he doesn't seem to have the zeal to win the day. In that, he's like the exact opposite of what the media warned against.
3. Some absolutely stupid moments: 1. The entire opening sequence. Lots of WTF, but the most obvious one was, have they lost remote control technology? We could send a drone into the volcano today.
This is pretty true. I'm more calling BS on them hiding under water instead of just floating in orbit, or in the atmosphere at a discrete distance. 2. What exactly was the plan that Starfleet had to attack Khan? He's on the Klingon home world. Did he think they'd never notice a bomb going off? And who they'd immediately blame.
Well, I understood that the rogue admiral was intending to provoke a war. 3. Why send all 72 of the bombs when they only needed one? If the point was to get Khan to rescue his compatriots, why not make him come to them?
Moreso, if the plan was to kill all of Kahn's companions, why not just kill them, rather than have Kirk do it unknowingly. 4. How did Khan know they send those particular weapons after him?
The idea seems to have been to send Kirk to exterminate Khan, kill his companymen unknowingly, and provoke a war with the Klingons. 5. Did that ship have any sort of security at all? Scotty just lands at their base and is given full access. No one notices him?
Yeah, in our age of the techno-survellance state, all of Star Trek history kind of looks silly, with people creeping around each other;s ships. 6. Did Starfleet know anything about security? Setting up a meeting room with glass windows (and not bulletproof glass) instead of in an underground bunker?
Also noticeably goofy at my end. 7. Khan clearly read the script beforehand. His actions made little sense unless he knew exactly what was going to happen.
Khan knows all, even when his enemies are irrational, except how he's gonna get outfoxed on the last move. That said, the movie had enough in the tank to make it a decent adventure flick, if you didn't think about things. Yeah, I dunno if J.J. Abrams is a genius madmen or if our standards have fallen so far, that he's now made two mostly appreciated and appreciable Star Trek movies without about 50 gaping plot holes and implausibilities between them.
4. That closer has REALLY come out of nowhere. He's a ahead of Scott Rice in his off-the-turnip-truck status, but not much more than that. Grilli's been a major leaguer for a decade, but mostly an ineffective one. Now he's carrying the bullpen of the best team in the majors? Back when we saw them, they really look like a lot of other pretenders --- Braves, Yankees up until a few weeks ago --- in that they seemed to be running half a lineup out there most nights. I figured, like the Yankees, the realities of playing Hide the Scrubs would catch up with them, and the seemingly more well rounded Cards and Reds would knock them down to size. It's almost July 4th and this hasn't come to pass.
5. Seems like a pretty crappy return on the items, it's true.
6. Or is it like a no-hitter, and we ruin it if we mention it?
7. Mets Sign No. 25 International Prospect Ali Sanchez July 2, 2013 by Ben Badler Venezuelan catcher Ali Sanchez, the No. 25 international prospect for July 2, has signed with the Mets for $690,000. Sanchez, 16, is 6 feet, 180 pounds with good catch-and-throw skills, quick feet and good hands. Scouts highest on him have been impressed with his ability to hit in games by staying inside the ball with a contact-oriented swing from the right side of the plate. Sanchez has traveled to the Dominican Republic to play in the International Prospect League and trains with Yhonson Lopez. Baseball America subscribers can access a complete scouting report on Sanchez, along with reports on more of the top international prospects on the market. He's also pretty. Also found while looking for more on this Sanchez... Mets Sign Venezuelan Righthander Luis Silva July 2, 2013 by Ben Badler The Mets have signed Venezuelan righthander Luis Silva for $275,000. Silva, 16, is 6 feet, 170 pounds with long arms, a high-waisted frame and a loose delivery. He throws strikes and generates sink on his fastball, which he can run up to the low-90s at times. He also throws a mid-70s breaking ball and a solid changeup for his age. Silva trained with Julio Bolivar. No related posts.

9. I'm more interested in reports that Satin's play may delay Davis' recall. I hope that's just motivation speak -- as Davis is slumping again. But Davis' return should be wholly linked to Davis's ability. Satin should be competing with Turner and Lutz for plate appearances. Satin is a pretty good righthanded secondbaseman relegated to first. They need a lefthanded slugger in the lineup yesterday, and he'll likely never be that. You know, they can settle these two issues at once by making Satin a catcher.
10. I thought Capuano had been a lifelong Brewer before the Mets got him.
11. Awkward exchange between my sister and my wife. Sis: So, you've been taking piano students? Wife: Yeah, I didn't recruit any. But a couple approached me, and I thought I'd give it a try. They've passed my name on to other people, so it's just worked out that way. Sis: So, I guess those who can't do, teach? Wife: Actually those who can't do... marry a rich fat guy and get nannies to take care of their kids, even though they don't work. Sis: I'm sorry. Wife: Nothing. Excuse me.
12. I'm betting it comes from the offensive side. t's not like Valdy and Nieuwie are getting any PT. Lutz even less.
13. Shoulda made this move at the start of the homestand. This pen is gassed.
14. * The danger, of course, is that he was putting the winning run on when he walked Buck and "The Book" considers that a no-no. That's a pretty good page in the book. On the other hand he did it to get to a pitcher batting (no NYM options) who, if he swung away, was a GiDP candidate or, if he bunted, the 2nd out. Well, sure, but if he doesn't, he gets a chance to pitch to Buck for the second out --- and every manager in the league knows Buck is pitchable these days, chasing outside slider after outside slider for six weeks --- and Harvey for the third out, taking the bunting option away from the pitcher. Walking Buck sets up the Bunt, Terry gets a pass out of the corner he had painted himself into. * IW-ing Q to get to Brown is a little more suspect in that it brought the game-tying walk into play. But it also gave Collmenter a RHB to face instead of a LHB, a newbie instead of a vet, and worked around the night's hot batter for one recently in the game. And it's not so much the game-tying walk, but it's the pitch you throw to avoid the game-tying walk. Brown is just the sort of AAA star that is dangerous in the bigs --- if you have to go after him and if you have your back end-pitchers at him. Q was hot, no doubt, but pitch around him a little. Give you pitcher a chance to get him out without giving into him. Don't just quit on him. Basically, it came down to --- do I want to pitch to Buck with a chance to tie the game with a single, or force them to execute a bunt successfully giving Quintanilla with a chance to win the game with a single? Buck-for-a-single vs. Harvey-for-a-sacrifice-and-Quintanilla-for-a-single, with a bigger payoff. I take curtain #2 every time. It can probably be quantifiably measured with some reliability.

16. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Andrew Brown gives about as colorful a postgame interview as you'd expect out of a guy named Andrew Brown. Mazel tov, ya big schnooze. Great work. Nonsense. He was wonderful. I, on the other hand, fell asleep during one of the intentional walks, woke up to Cohen calling the game-winning hit.
17. Well, they didn't sign A-Rod, but traded for him. Unless you mean when they re-signed him. This is an excellent time --- and by excellent, I mean "very informative for both the Mets and Yankees and everybody" --- to compare sales with actual attendance. The decline in butts is the real story, and like YES ratings, is a more immediate guage of the marketability. If attendance is down 6% now, September might be mortifying, depending on whether they are able to pour Jeter back into his uniform. Man, they are going to hammer the last-chance-to-see-Rivera angle, aren't they?
18. Well, they have to get it out of the way now. They won't get a chance to fold for the Yankees in October.
19. Can anybody make sense of Kirk Gibsons walkophilia in the ninth?
20. It was a nice monkey to shake off tonight. All the Mets' minor league teams got clobbered or are getting clobbered tonight. Who cares, right?
21. Andrew Brown shouting to the crowd > cream pie face
22. Down to the last strike. Lets find some appearances for El Bron.
