  1. Johan, at some level, will probably command a guaranteed big league job, no? I don't think his brand has degraded quite as much as Daisuke's, even if Matsuzaka is demonstrably healthy. Maybe not.
  2. Is Viola in here somewhere?
  3. I think this one actually has two. Is that Francisco Rodriguez in the lower righthand corner?
  4. Do commemorative issues count?
  5. batmagadanleadoff wrote: "It would be an honor," Matsuzaka said through an interpreter, "and something I would take seriously." You're a pitcher who has your agent hustling to find you an NRI. You're going to say anything else about the team you're currently pitching for? batmagadanleadoff wrote: I hope this cover fueled Koosman's competitive rage every day and night throughout his career. I hope it does still.
  6. I wouldn't call it losing as it is something they don't yet have. But se la vie.
  7. Isn't it amazing that they could take such an unoriginal idea and slather themselves in it as if it was sprung right from George Steinbrenner's crazy head? Rivera has said he neither knows the cares about the content of the song and certainly didn't choose it for himself. Of course it was taken from another team and another player. What could the Yankees possibly risk doing first? Metallica, meanwhile gets a cut into their income if that song ends up artificially disappearing from playlists.
  8. So, is homefield advantage that important, or do you save your top starter for the play-in game? The question seems academic, as it isn't really clear who either team's top starter is. Cueto and Liriano, I guess.
  9. That's some amazin' dream transcription.
  10. If he gets a slot, it'll only be because he's earned it. There'll be a lot of options.
  11. Chicago takes it 4-2. Pittsburgh should still fly to Phoenix to pee in the pool.
  12. Heckuva tightrope to be walking there.
  13. I don't know how long Ron Washington lasts coming so close so often. He's got one more year on his deal.
  14. G-Fafif wrote: Not exactly a pop culture sighting, but this caught my Metsian eye, from The New Republic's profile of estranged Clinton retainer/handler Doug Band. Not everyone in Clintonland was thrilled at Bands ascent. He can come across as pretty harshly judgmental, says a former senior aide to Hillary Clinton. You could fill Shea Stadium with people who havent heard from Doug, or heard something they didnt want to hear, or heard something that alienates them. Unless research on this article began five or more years ago, that's a pretty nifty allusion for 2013. I think a little footwork and you can probably definitively name this un-named former senior aide outright.

G-Fafif wrote: Contrary to rumors that a Mo Vaughn float is being constructed to ride in the 2014 Tournament of Roses, the actual Mo Vaughn has been spotted leading the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim into the 2013 non-championship parade. The Angels qualified for the processional when they stopped conceivably qualifying for 2013 championship consideration on September 21. And really, could Mo Vaughn have signed with the Angels at a more sartorially confused time for this geographically confused franchise?
  16. Booo! I was hoping the O's would at least outlast the Yankees.
  17. Can we turn this game into a tear-filled and tribute-soaked sendoff for Matsuzaka?
  18. Hopefully, sooner rather than later, the organization's money will no longer be too tight to mention.
  19. That would be a creative form of vandalism. Replacing Yankee plaques with bogus (but accurate) rewrites.
  20. That could work, but only if you sell it as if you're serious. You'd have to wear the hat and shirt.
  21. Not that it works that way, but I tend to think of him as the Byrdbooty, and Black as the Buckbooty.
  22. It'd be pretty embarrassing, and perhaps a little sketchy, if the Mets under Sandy ended up signing a guy who was misrepresenting his age.
  23. He's just homely!
  24. A doubleplay ends it. And there I was hoping to see Black nail down a four-strikeout inning.
