  2. Had this weird habit of striding toward the first base line and trying to generate leverage by falling toward the plate. Seemed to affect both his speed and (particularly) his control. Kent Tekulve would fall and catch himself during his motion, but at least he stepped directly toward the plate, and so not waste his drive. Stepping in a different direction than you're pitching just seems to be fighting yourself. I got the idea that it drove Terry a little nuts, if not Warthan. Anyways, I thought, being that this submarining thing was new to him, year two might've been a better measure of whether he'd pull it off. Good luck in Colorado.
  3. Headed to the Roxx, according to Roobs. Fails to surpass Tim as most successful Burke in Met history.
  4. Yeah, as a minor league signing, I think he could be a great move. All upside. Finding fruits that have totally rolled down the hillside is fun. That's surely what Byrdie was.
  5. Well, Pena's unerwhelming performance goes well back into the Omar era. In fact, while his failure seemed a fait accompli two years ago, the last two seasons he's shown just enough puncher's power, just enough plate discipline and just enough defensive aptitude to sort of edge back into the picture as at least a potential backup. Anyhow, that's why I'm thinking he gets re-signed. Won't take a great performance to fashion a better career than his brother.
  6. Minor League Free Agents Triple-A: RHP Giancarlo Alvarado, RHP Greg Burke, RHP Matt Fox, RHP D.J. Mitchell, RHP Daryl Thompson, RHP Cory Wade, LHP Justin Hampson, C Francisco Pena, SS Brian Bixler, SS Brandon Hicks, and OF Jamie Hoffmann. Double-A: RHP Dylan Owen, RHP Armando Rodriguez, C Jeyckol De Leon, SS Josh Rodriguez, 1B Rhyne Hughes, and 3B Richard Lucas. I see them pursuing (at least Burke) and trying to bring back Pena, De Leon and maybe Rodriguez and Lucas. Wasn't Armando Rodriguez a half a prospect once upon?
  7. Alice in Chains? No fway! I want "Spoonman."
  8. I got Byrdie in there already. Obviously, any number of relievers can qualify. I'm grabbing a righty from 2004 and a lefty from 2006. Both did well, but neither lasted beyond a year, and so garnered only 1.1 pitching WAR apiece. Surely, we can top that. 1) ..., cf 2) Valentin, 2b 3) Byrd, rf 4) Tatis, 3b 5) Clark, 1b 6) ..., lf 7) Pratt, c 8) ... , ss Dickey, sp Reed, sp Young, sp ... , sp Botallico, rp Oliver, rp ... , rp ... , rp
  9. There's no such thing as a filler year, man. And there ain't no dog days. They're all precious. Either he's your man or he ain't.
  10. Use your memory, and cross check with the Google, I guess. Tony Clark checks out. Good one. The record's a little more ambiguous with Reed, but it looks like, yeah, he came in on a minor league deal. 1) ..., cf 2) Valentin, 2b 3) Byrd, rf 4) Tatis, 3b 5) Clark, 1b 6) ..., lf 7) Pratt, c 8) ... , ss Dickey, sp Reed, sp ... , sp ... , sp ... , rp ... , rp ... , rp ... , rp

Between 199-220 innings the last five years with 120ish Ks, doesn't walk guys, ERA in the high 3s (3.84, 3.88, 5.07, 3.74, 3.79). I'd absolutely sign him. And if the team is able to field the strong defensive outfield they hope to, along with the stadiums challenging dimensions, the Mets may be in a better position to absorb his downside than most. On the other hand, that ERA pattern suggests he's about due for a hiccup year.
  12. The best players in Mets history who started out as non-roster free agents. Help me out here. 1) ..., cf 2) Valentin, 2b 3) Byrd, rf 4) Tatis, 3b 5) .., 1b 6) ..., lf 7) Pratt, c 8) ... , ss Dickey, sp ... , sp ... , sp ... , sp ... , rp ... , rp ... , rp ... , rp
  13. The world needs NRIs. Somebody's got to field those fungoes.

  15. But probably a point of appeal for the Mets.
  16. Sings GooGoo Dolls songs.
  17. It's anybody's guess whether he's coming at all. ceetar wrote: Furcal is better than Quintanilla or Turner as a backup. I'd say that's in the territory of conjecture. We have no idea if he's healthy enough to take the field in competition. Thirty-six-year-old shortstops are rare enough, even just counting the ones with intact elbows.
  18. That's pretty funny (though certainly potentially true) to claim that Furcal represents an upgrade. He gets no guaranteed money from me.
  19. I suspect the Yankees are drawing up a two-year-plus-an-option deal for him as we speak (or type).
  20. Hey, the Expos abandoned San Juan!

  25. I prefer a player who disappears into the wilderness for several years over a player who loses 3/4 of one year to injury.
