  1. My eyes are going. Whenever this thread pops up, I see "Davis-Duda, arrested."
  2. Yeah, but Marvel an DC are on a roll. Every guy (seemingly) Green Arrow hunts down, or the assassin he hires for him... it's all: "Jan Van der Sloot, you have failed this city!" "Joo Infante, you have failed this city!" "Natasha Grishkin, you have failed this city!"
  3. Again, this promotion isn't about veterans per se. But from my observation over the last 32 years, I'd guess that veterans' causes rival only the University of Michigan among Fred Wilpon's personal favorite beneficiaries, whatever his faults. And MLB's broader efforts on behalf of veterans have largely been driven by Wilpon's initiative. That's my observation, anyhow. http://metsmerizedonline.com/2010/07/welcome-back-veterans-thank-you-fred-wilpon.html
  4. These votes are supposed to be filed before (and therefore without regard to the outcome of) the post-season, are they not?
  5. Meanwhile, Dick Young is alive and well.
  6. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Good for Marlon; hopefully not good for Phillies. This seems like an early (in the offseason) signing, doesn't it? Maybe, but he's the sort of guy who gets gobbled up during the GM meetings. Not a Type A, but no minor-league/camp-invite guy either. Two years, decent but not pre-emptive money. The sort of guy that happens while they feel out the market.
  7. Frayed Knot wrote: Atlanta mayor says that Turner Stadium will be demolished after the Braves leave. Hope they tear down all the championship banners. #OOPS! Seriously, though, has any stadium ever seen so much overall-success-mixed-with-lack-of-ultimate-triumph in history? Seventeen seasons. Fifteen of them winning ones. Twelve playoff seasons. No championships. The math on my napkin says that's .571 winning percentage. Any stadium would be lucky to be so winny. But never has its team raised a championship banner.
  8. "Duda. He is better project than Ike." That's some way to make a decision. My confusion over this comment may be what swung me to Davis.
  9. I'm starting to get the notion from all Marvel superhero movies and TV shows that the greatest threat to makinkind is modestly charismatic Eurotrash and their damned fay hairstyles. Those fuckers apparently are so totally devoid of empathy.
  10. We're similar cats, different only in degree. I might be drifting toward 2.
  11. I'm scout 4, God help me.
  12. Seems reasonable... for the right team in the right position. Whether that's the Phillies is hard for me to answer. Beats Delmon Young, surely.
  13. How about that --- A.J. Pollock got even more scrod than Laggy, and it takes the stat geeks to argue for the importance of defense.
  14. Suprised Teheran is a rook. He's barely appeared in the bigs before this year, but the Mets saw him twice in 2011. Homers are nice, but surely Laggy outperformed Gattis and Gyorko. Probably Teheran, too.
  15. In fair fairness, it's not about veterans per se, as the associated promotion isn't for vets, but for active duty or retired military personnel. And unless I'm wrong, it takes 20 years of service to earn the "retired" designation. They just chose Veteran's Day to launch it, which may or may not have been wise.
  16. TransMonk wrote: Average Monday home attendance was 27,187 in 2013 - 65% of capacity...plenty of seats to spare. Also, it's another jersey option and jerseys don't sell cheap. Unless they sell at a CitiField store, giving the Mets a chunk of the markup, doesn't all MLB-licensed merchandise revenue get otherwise shared?
  17. The only way this can come out as a cynical way to directly further enwealthen the Wilpon clan is if they manage to sell more tickets on Mondays. Seems perhaps just as likely that they'll lose money, as the promotion involves granting complimentary tickets to U.S. military personnel with an active or retired military identification and up to three other guests.
  18. But just to be clear, they still can't wear the emergency responder caps on September 11, because somehow --- among the Mets, MLB, New ERA, and the MLBPA --- nobody yet has hired somebody smart enough to clear up any possible conflicts there.
  19. "Hi, Joan. It's Fred Wilpon." "Hi, Fred." "We wanted you to know. We're un-retiring number 14." "You're WHAT?!" "Yeah, you know. For Jay Horwitz." "Oh, well, you should have told me that up front. You've got to take care of Jay."
  20. I went to the hearing that Congress convened after MLB announced it's intention to contract. Other topics that came up were the coming CBA war and drugs, and in fact the contraction threat was just MLB flexing it's muscle in anticipation of the coming CBA. Then-Governor Jesse Ventura was a surprisingly effective witness for the cities facing the loss of their teams and being strongarmed into providing new facilities (strongarmed by the same maneuver that MLB was strongarming the MLBPA with --- well played, Commissioner Selig!). He insisted that he, as a former wrestler, could also see the issues from the perspective of an athlete. When this drew broad laughter, he angrily raised his voice, "Say what you will about wrestling, but we use existing facilities and pay rents set by the free marketplace." Nobody laughed at that one. But his most damning testimony was showing pictures of the HHH Metrodome, and pointing out that the trees planted around the outside hadn't yet matured, and here he was being told that the league was firing the city because their facility was woefully out of date. It was scored as "HR-Ventura" by any non-biased bookkeeper in the room. If only it was a 15th inning walkoff. The Metrodome was about 17 at that time, if I remember correctly.
  21. Check out the baseball maniacs in 30269!
  22. "In what is being hailed as a victory for rich people everywhere and a great opportunity for Atlanta Braves players to shorten their commutes... ."
  23. Wilmer Flores straight up!
  24. Six years after then-Duckie Jose Offerman ended two minor leaguers careers by attaking them with a bat, his case is ready to go to trial... and he's nowhere to be found.
