  1. Guys, with much love for my blogging brothers and sisters, those guys are professional baseball writers from major metropolitan newspapers.
  2. I already had Atchy down as a free agent, refusing to believe, despite the credible testimony, that he hadn't yet clocked six seasons of service time. If somebody told you he'd pitched for the Expos, tell me you wouldn't believe.
  3. Well, you didn't even paste him into the list.
  4. An advantage Yankee Stadia II has is that there were more teams in the AL from 1977 to 1993. The disadvantage is that Shea spans YS I and II and covers both leagues the two years in between. Go, Shea!
  5. Very sad to watch someone's deluded self-image cracking. Got to happen, but it doesn't need to happen in front of a camera.
  6. Oh, do go on. Michael McKenry, senator from Maryland. Justin Ruggiano, Penn State defensive tackle. Tommy Hanson, on the other hand, sounds like... a good guy to take a flyer on?
  7. Terry Bross! (Do we have an answer yet on whether he's one of the pitchers with the best WAR/IP?)
  8. Which kind of gives Shea an edge, I think.

The problem is that attrition hits much harder in pitching rotations than in outfield units. You've got to get durable vets in place and prepare the rookies to jump in the breach when they fail or go down. Throwing a surfeit of the young and unestablished right out there is a precipitous decision.
  10. Looking at this card and wondering... ...is it possible that Shea is the setting for more baseball card shots than any other location? Can that question even be researched without needing a team of ten and five years, with the help of a generous grant from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation?
  11. Here's their new first base coach posing at Shea.
  12. If you missed Tejada playing himself out of a job, well, he played himself out of a job. How many Tejada starts were the difference between him being called up on September 1 and being called up when he did?
  13. Frayed Knot wrote: His hitting is more than a little bit K-tastic (94 in 256 ABs - Oh my!!!) ... BUT - he walks a decent amount - over 40% of his ML hits have gone for XBs - he hits right-handed (when, you know, he hits) so the platoon aspect works there But he's not creaky and old and I guess they like him defensively. No wonder Barajas makes his comp list. The Mets could have a Flores and a Flowers in '14.

  16. I'd say it's highly unlikely. They clearly and with good reason lost 95% of their faith in him at short and 71% of their faith in him at second. He'll have to make a pretty irresistible case, because they will resist.
  17. Strange to see such an enigmatic and haunted title applied to a my-bad-ass-hobby-becomes-a-vehicle-for-adventure film. It's like The Fast and the Furious meets Mystic River.
  18. Certainly. It would bump out deGrom as the number five starter. The current number four is Mejia, and it's far from certain that he'll be ready to be a viable part of a big league rotation April 1 or thereafter. VBLSs are definitely a need.
  19. You 're probably looking too many steps down the road, and for what it's worth, I think Niese still clocks in as the Mets' number one, but yeah.
  20. Bronson would join Trot Nixon, Pedro Martinez, and Brian Daubach among 2004 Red Sox to later come to the Mets.
  21. You'd figure Knieval's leathers are so distinctly recognizeable that he'd be easily fingered by his victims.
  22. If the implication is that Ryan Church was valueless, or a throw-in or not a real target of the deal, I disagree with that. He had OPS+'d at 131 and 114 the previous two seasons. Also, while Milledge could be called a top prospect pre-2006, it's debatable whether he was still such an animal pre-2008. Clearly the Mets had lost some faith.
  23. Church was doing all-f'ing-right until concussing himself attempting to break up a game-ending double play. Never remotely the same player after. Nonetheless, this strikes me as the sort of deal that Alderson stays away from. (He stays away from a lot of them.) If he has a positoin open and can't find the player he wants for the price he wants, he'd just as soon try and squeeze two WAR out of minor league free agents and fringy prospects, rather than try and reach three WAR by going with an unditinguished veteran, holding his money and redirecting any difference elsewhere.
  24. The issue reportedly is that he's asking multiple years. The Mets are only interested for one.
