  1. The big three I associate with being influenced by Big Star are REM, the Bangles, and the Replacements, to one degree or another, and in different ways. REM referenced them in guitar textures, the Bangles in harmonies, and the Replacements in song structure.
  2. It's fishy, I tells ya.
  3. Duda's in the fold!!
  4. Crap. I rooted for him 'til the end.
  5. The Nats/Ats relationship is starting to get weird. Today they announced that versatile outfielder Corey Brown goes to Oakland (back to Oakland) for multi-position player Cash Kinsiderashins. Brown had previously gone from Oakland to Washington in the Josh Willingham trade back in 2010. But the bigger story is that this is the third trade between these two teams this offseason and the eighth in the last three years. WHAT'S THE DEAL, BILLY BEANE?!
  6. Not sure I'd've gone with the red background there, People cover editor.
  7. That's a surprise to this reader, too. Hey, who's the wife in between Buddy and Yvonne? Why is Bun E. Carlos behind Tom? Was he on the flight? [fimg=777:3ehu0c9k]http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7304/12064682286_461b73ca46_o.jpg[/fimg:3ehu0c9k]
  8. Lee Mazzilli and his fictional wife in Tony 'n' Tina's Wedding. Ray Knight, Nancy Lopez, and kids, circa '88.
  9. I don't think he profiles like Irabu. More like Halladay, I think, or Maddux. Coming off a 24-0 season and working on a 26-game winning streak... that's no joke. His ERAs the last few years... 1.27, 1.87, 1.27. That's not a bag of Goldfish crackers. Downsides: His K/9 has been dropping, from 1.06 in 2011, to 0.97 in 2012, to 0.86 last year. They've changed the ball or something, haven't they? The real downside is that, like Daisuke, he had one of those legendary work loads in high school that are like something out of a comic book or a W.P. Kinsella novel. They should be happy to get three high-end seasons out of the seven. But at least they didn't have to pay $51.1 million up front for the honor. And he's only 25, only four months older than Harvey. It's defensible, certainly, but it's hard to see how this is a safer risk than Cano.
  10. .... because metal detectors will be required at all MOB stadia by 2015.
  11. The Yankees should be fine. Isn't this just the sort of situation they signed Drew Henson for?
  12. "There's some'n'... I say, there's some'n' that's kind of YEEEeeee about a kid that's never played baseball."
  13. Man, you need an article, buy Ron Davis a beer and let him talk your ear off.
  14. Everybody else approaching arbitration has come to an agreement at or around the halfway point between the team's offer and the player's request. It certainly could be the team drawing a hard line. I imagine they draw up their budgets by taking whatever their offer is and adding 25% to it.
  15. What a smorgasbord of delectable nomenclature the whole list amounts to: [list:3bsn5wbz]1. Kolten Wong 2. Rougned Odor 3. Mookie Betts 4. Arismendy Alcantara 5. Devon Travis 6. Jonathan Schoop 7. Taylor Lindsey 8. Eddie Rosari 9. Micah Johnson 10. Wilmer Flores[/list:u:3bsn5wbz] How crazy to be coming to the table with an ace of a name like "Wilmer Flores" and realize it probably doesn't even qualify for the top five on this list. What a great time to be young and collecting cards. "Rougned Odor"!!
  16. Flores drops from seventh (in 2013) to 10th among secondbase prospects. Dilson drops off the list despite his relative youth. Prospects are rated in various departments on the scouting range from 20-80, but (as is common) nobody on this list is graded above 60 or below 40 on anything --- the lone exception being Flores, who was given a "20" for his range.
  17. The Gee settlement, as reported, is official Don't know what Duda is holding out for. Posters of trucks for his bedroom, I think.
  18. John Dewan sings of Bartolo. Colon may be the most fascinating case. In his prime, Colon was an elite pitcher with tremendous stuff. Now, he is in his 40s and averages less than 90 mph on his fastball. However, rather than shy away from his diminished fastball, Colon has relied on the pitch more and more. In 2013, he threw it 86 percent of the time. Despite the frequency and slowness of the pitch, Colon enjoyed the best ERA of his career.
  19. No way! Torre got a pitchman's deal on his three-pieces.
  20. Cliff would, I guess, be the first Mets English-language announcer of color --- well, of a color more vivid and marginalized than half-Polynesian, anyhow. It would probably play into the WOR and Mets thinking a little, no? Wright can make him carry his luggage.
  21. I'm not sure. I think I would play air banjo.
  22. Has a lot in common thematically, with Hot Tub Time Machine. The main difference is this movie's version of "Lou" --- Gary --- is the protagonist.
  23. Reports have Gee and the Mets and the Mets and Gee settling at $3.625 million, about .005 off from his ERA. If that's true, the arbitration chapter of the book of the offseason looks to be a brief one, with only Duda unsettled.
  24. Now you're stretching.
