  1. Starting catcher Wilin Rosario is day-to-day with a hand contusion. If he can grip the bat, he gets the call. A squat, chubby-cheek'd Dominican, Wilin has solid Coors Field power, is a good bet for 20-25 homers, and loves to hit lefties. Hits .250-.256 and gets his share of strikeouts. He's got a strong arm but is considered mechanically weak as a catcher. (In fact, Rockies fans and their press hate his catching game.) If he can't go, Jordan Pacheco will. Patch is a fringey guy with a goofy grin and a solid stick who, as a catcher, makes a nice firstbaseman. Still, chixx dig the backup catcher. Hey, that's not Todd Helton over there at first! Who the heck IS that?!

It's the nature of consumption to grow more sophisticated. Probably entertainment consumption more than most. The reason there are no ushers in movie theaters any more is that nobody would think to come late. Once upon a time, folks were streaming in and out through the whole movie.
  3. Sounds like a... Cry for HelpTM.
  4. He also scores well in the "Just Showing Up" column.
  5. Mejia: 0-12 Gee: 0-9 Colon: 0-8 Wheeler: 0-7 Niese: 0-4 Torres: 0-1 German: 0-1 It's, like, the hitlessiest start for a pitching staff since the 70s or something. Not all has been in futility, though. Met pitchers have walked six times, four of them by Niese, including that bases loaded jobbie that sunk Hamels the other night. They have three of the squad's 101 RBI. They have also successfully sacrificed runners ahead on the bases six times. Most impressive feat has to be that Colon only has six strikeouts, meaning he has put the ball in play twice. Go, Bartolo!!
  6. The funny thing is that the starting pitching has been consistently on, but nobody generally dominating, leaving Eric Young leading the team in WAR? Wutzdat?
  7. Yeah, there's often a lot of drama when an outfielder returns from an injury, only to find his replacement has been hitting well enough to stay in the lineup, but there shoudn't be, as there is always enough plate appearances to go around. If you throw the first-baseman into the mix, five guys should be able to start 80% of the time at four positions.

It's interesting that Anna's falling-in-love song felt catchy but dumb and shallow and forced and jarringly different from the rest of the songs, and it turned out to be appropriately so, as her relationship turned out to be dumb and shallow and forced.
  9. Really interesting to see whether Lagares picks up where he left off and keeps hitting, and/or how the Mets squeeze four starting outfielders into three spots.
  10. We need someone not funny but really popular. Jon Stewart? /ducks
  11. Sign him up and we can have an all-Young outfield.

  14. The low-res black-and-white photo and the modular furniture sure gives this a 70s feel, though don't it?

  16. Very cartoonishly directed. This is true of 16 Candles, but since this one has a lot more pathos at the center of it, it feels more inappropriate. And since he both wrote and directed it, it's kinda strange that the script and the direction seem to have a different tone.
  17. It's cool, I've gained all the weight you've lost.
  18. metsmarathon wrote: iand i did hand-wring at the time that the whole pivotal let it go song was kinda saying, "move past your doubts and insecurities - you too can be sexed up, bitchy bad girl if that's what you really want" This is the crux of thing, I think. It's thematically about female maturity, and how down we are with this song and with this film kind of depends on how we draw the line between sexed over and cold and mean and (literally) anti-social on one hand and self-possessed and free and artistic and liberated and in control of one's own sexuality on the other. I don't know where I fall, and I guess not being a girl or the parent of girl liberates me from the challenge of the question, but I salute them for trying to throw that out there and living a little in the ambiguity.

  21. Good luck with that, Rube.
  22. Mets marketers apparently are alarmed. So I did my job and called up a Mets marketer and spoke at length with him. Wait, I didn't do that at all. Instead, I published this screed which looks twice as amateurish as any Mets marketing campaign.
  23. I'm not sure that's really a skewing. I think a few 13-1 losses that would be 7-1 if not for the last two guys in your bullpen being suckers may just mean "a loss is a loss" in the short term, but possibly may meaningful data could project a real weakness over 162 games.
  24. That really is SUCH a classic New York robbery report item. "They stole my knockoff high end watch!" Johan should buy him an authentic one, but it just would never suit Duda.
  25. Let's just say that I don't know much about marketing, but jus' because it don't work for me doesn't mean it doesn't work for the fourth grader that gets his dad to buy him tickets. I mean, it seems a big part of social media marketing is to get folks to sign this or that, which I guess kinda pushes vulnerable minds into making a psychological commitment to the brand, and also harvests names and e-mail accounts for future marketing pusches --- moves them from the "Brand-Aware Prodigals" to the "Personally Connected Advocates" among the marketing segmentation groups, or from the "Personally Connected Advocates" to the "Cultural Disciples." I mean, Texas State Senator Wendy Davis has some marketing firm put something in my FB feed EVERY DAY asking me to sign this letter or that petition demanding redress against the latest offensive comment to her womanhood. I'm neither a Democrat nor a Texan, and I'm certainly not naive enough to believe her complaint is about answering the offense in question, but rather advancing her campaign for governor, but clearly somebody who knows something more about marketing than me knows this is how you advance a brand.
