  1. Matt dD tweets a shot of his hose before the game. Goodness, we are going to win by a huge margin today.
  2. I'm setting the over/under at 15 Mets runs and taking the over.
  3. Man, Lance Lynn. I just have inexplicable antipathy for so many of these Cardinals. Meanwhile, God has intervened. And will not let Bartolo Colon bat eighth. [*:3ggp3gav]E. 4. Well, if it means trading a loss to get Wright and Duda going, then I.... totally wouldn't have taken that deal at all. But I sure hope this game gets Wright and Duda going.
  5. Seems to me that, even if teams aren't finding it necessary, or tasteful, the league wants them to pander for votes. I imagine a good portion of the vote-grubbing content on the Mets website is created at league offices, and looks exactly like the vote-grubbing at most other teams' sites.
  6. David Wright hitting like he's angry. For the record, I don't know why there's that much anger over Niese's hook last time. It's a lose/lose call. The move was successful and Niese certainly didn't miss out on any win he otherwise would have gotten, as the game remained tied until the 13th. Maybe the bullpen may have lasted longer had they not yanked Niese, but it's asking a lot of a manager to manage in the seventh in order to preserve enough pitching to get through the 13th.
  7. God, even more than seeing that drive by Wright fly out, it was just nice to see him pull a ball.
  8. That damned idol-smashing Deadspin site has turned into a... complete Tony Gwynn lovefest the last two days.
  9. It is. Wifey MD, in fact, says his strong brow reminds her of you. I liken him to Jon Niese, though, beakwise, and so he stands in as my Niese muppet analog.
  10. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Just remembering now how much Paul E. C. hated the guy. I actually didn't much argue with him much in the old days but did get into it once on the subject of Tony Gwynn. His point of view, I guess, was that Gwynn was the embodiment of the batting average and the weight that fools he wouldn't suffer gave to it, but it was like personal with him. I was just re-reading the thread from the top, and noticing MetsGuy's initial, stunned, "Horrible! I always liked him." "Who didn't like Tony Gwynn?" I thought. The guy was the soul of decency. But there you have it. Pauly didn't like Tony Gwynn. I'm remembering an joint interview done with late-model Tony along with Larry Walker, 1998-1999-ish, when they were both hitting north of .375 late in the season, and the interviewer asks them both if they think about allure of hitting .400. Walker gave the boilerplate Bull Durham answer, that it's just a number, that he's just trying to help his team, yaddayaddayadda, anything he can offer as long as they win. Tony goes completely off book in a way that surprised me, saying that he honestly thought about it a LOT. That Walker's answer made perfect sense for Walker, because he was also capable of hitting 40 bombs in a season and was young and athletic enough to help his team on defense every day. "But giving my team base hits is a big part of who I am and what I do. I hustle out there, but if I'm not getting base hits, I'm frankly not helping my team. And .400 is the standard of excellence for getting base hits. So yeah, I think about it." A refreshingly honest look into the mind of someone who, like Rickey Henderson, was able to find a mindset that was, at the same time, self-centered and team-oriented.
  11. Glad to see the 1994 Expos, but it's really hard to judge "cool" when limited to a timespan that starts almost exactly as the seventies end.
  12. Really interesting that the three top performers against Tony Gwynn were all Pirates of the mid-late-80s. They played on the rug which should've helped him. They didn't have particularly high-performing defenders on the left side of the infield. What did they have? My guess is that Tony Pea had him figured out.
  13. Worth remembering that before he started carrying that basketball around under his shirt --- and probably for some time after --- he was an outstanding all-round athlete. It was basketball that got him recruited to San Diego State. He ended up making third team all-America, and his mixed concentration is perhaps why he fell to the third round in the draft, despite being an obvious and polished talent once his commitment to baseball was established.
  14. What did the booth have to say about Gwynn? Did Darling mention that the guy killed him, six strikeouts or not?

  16. This game was rotten. I also got the Cardinals feed, and while I've put up with a lot of MLB.tv giving me the other team's broadcasters, the Cards broadcast was intolerable, and I had to cut it and let Howie and Wayne take me home. Came away from the game with a strange sense of baseless optimism that things are about to turn. I think it was just the moral/aesthetic release of shutting that game off. It was like getting a joint popped back into place.
  17. Oh, like I couldn't have had 1,000 RBI if I wanted it.
  18. The pitcher batting eighth/slugger batting leadoff thing worked out a bit for us there.
  19. Whoo! Glad we didn't sign Peralta!
  20. It seems umps call more checked swings every year. Young barely started and got called for strike one.
  21. I like the early deficit. No lead for the team to blow for deGrom.
  22. HAH! Look at backwards-thinking St. Louis, batting the pitcher ninth, getting left behind the forward-looking world.
  23. Hes so far away that theres a pretty good shot that he will never even make the majors, but there is also a chance he could develop into a solid middle-of-the-rotation starter as he has a good frame, athleticism and the makings of three pitches. My people are saying that he's so far away that there's a good chance he's not even real.

Ceetar wrote: Edgy MD wrote: And ceetar gets the cruel and guilty pleasure of Young batting ninth --- which is exactly where you want the guy who does everything a leadoff man should do, but not enough. Wait a minute... this just in... TERRY HAS BEEN NAMED TIME'S MAN OF THE YEAR!!! With half the year still, to go, they're calling the race now. GOOD JOB, TERRY!! And it somewhat mitigates the power-hitter leadoff guy problem by putting a non-pitcher in front of him in subsequent innings. That factor was cited by TIME when they announced their decision. What a wonderful tribute to Tony LaRussa.
