I don't recall any report of Tejada coming in overweight. Mejia is unrecognizable with a visible neck.

Baltimore, for whatever reason, tried to slip Logan Verrett through waivers, and he's been claimed by the team the Mets are facing right now. He retains his Rule V (or Rule 5 or Rule Five) status, so he still needs to stay on the 25-man roster or be offered back to the Mets.

The Rangers booth is describing Mayberry, Jr. as "not quite the same type of player his father is," suggesting he doesn't cut quite the imposing figure. According baseball-reference.com, Junior is three inches taller and twenty pounds bigger.
-
Not a strong inning for Familia, but he gets the call for strike three.
-
Nieuwenhuis flashing some Juan Lagares-trademarked go-gettum skills. Make a catch like that, you've got to pay Laggy some money.
-
That's a lot of character in Mike Maddux's face these days.

Watching, in the fourth. And The Wizard Of Oz is on TV. If Murph isn't ready my vote goes to Reynolds if it's going to be any more than 3 games. Let Reynolds get hot, send Mr T down when Muffy returns. Let Tejeda get everyday at short down on the farm. Monell doubles to deeeeeeep right center. Tejada is not going down. If he was waived, he'd be grabbed in a Harlem second. Besides, to what end? So he can get some shortstop experience? He's the only experienced shortstop they have. By far.
-
Mets up 1-0 with two out in the third over the Rangers, who haven't yet gotten a scratch against Jacob deGrom. That's what you get for not dealing us a shortstop, jerks. Mets have something like their expected opening day lineup, with Lagares leading off, Tejada playing second and batting eighth, and deGrom batting ninth.

Strange. Maybe he was using mirrors, but he was getting the job done this spring. Twenty-three innings and a 3/13 ERA. Twenty-three strikeouts and eight walks. Where I come from, you don't release a starting pitcher striking out a guy per inning. But his last two appearance were his worst. You never want that to happen at decision time.
-
Montero would have to get past the "lacks lights-out stuff" label. Not to many control pitchers get the chance unless the team is desperate.
-
The stockpiling continues as the Mets go to the Rockford Aviators of the independent Frontier League and purchase the contract of Josh Smoker. Josh was a Nats prospect who was really good in 2011, his first year in the pen, but then played only six games in 2012 and none in 2013, before throwing 29 independent innings of mid-90s heat last season. I don't know if he was hurt or out of baseball in 2013, but he had shoulder surgery back in 2008. Likely to start 2014 in A+ with the Mets.
-
I'm still pissed about the scoreboard-expansion press release debacle. I don't know that I'll ever get over that one.
-
Ends as a scoreless tie. Our offense hasn't been the same since Granderson got hurt.
-
Oh, man. Be well, Grandy.
-
Man, I layed off of launching this as long as I could. Penance for launching a loser yesterday. but here we are in the fifth. Scoreless tie of the last Harveyday of the spring. Big play of the game is a defensively shifted David Wright going up for the liner at short-third. http://m.mlb.com/nym/video/v59480983/nymstl-wright-makes-leaping-grab-at-third/?game_pk=429938

batmagadanleadoff wrote: What's this business about cart guy having to get to Doubleday's within 30 minutes to close the deal? What if cart guy agreed over the phone, then got stuck in traffic or got a flat tire or something and was delayed? Delayed enough that he arrived at Doubleday's at precisely the same time as the other potential buyer got there? I can't believe Doubleday would make such a kooky arrangement. I suppose that once cart guy promised to show up to buy the cart, Doubleday could have called off the first potential buyer to avoid that kooky scenario imagined above. But then there'd be no need for cart guy to have to get to Doubleday within half an hour. The story seems to go was that Doubleday was selling the cart through an intermediary the garage where it was being stored. The intermediary found a would-be buyer and then recalled that the current owner had made regular inquiries through the years. He called the current owner and said that he could get it if he matched the price and showed up first. Not a particularly honorable way to operate, but not that different from the standard way New York auto mechanic garages work, in my experience. I wouldn't be surprised if he the agreement included a tax-free transaction if he paid in cash. When you not only back up five guys, but they're the five guys, more or less, most vulnerable to injury of any on the team, opportunities will arise. Unless you get hurt first. Or screw up first.
-
Looks like Montero makes the pen also, which may be another dose of tough news for Gilmartin. He needs to steal Buddy's bacon, now.

As if it hasn't been clear for a month (heck, it was pretty the last two months of last season), Kirk Nieuwenhuis has MADE this team. Still up in the air: Fifth starter, seventh bullpener, second catcher, and (potentially) the sixth infielder. But the outfield? Set! I'd've figured they'd wait until the last minute on that, since he's the last reserve outfielder if someone gets hurt between now and opening day. But I guess Campbell could become the fifth outfielder. The other last-minute decision of consequence belongs to Baltimore, still on the fence about keeping Logan Verrett, though he's given them nothing to be unhappy with.

Went for 90,000 according to ebay. Sotheby's says $112,500. Probably a premium the house puts on it. I can build my own for about $2,000.
