  1. Buddy Carlyle. Forever doomed to be the second-greatest Buddy in Mets history, but certainly the top-performing Buddy yesterday.
  2. I'm kind of rooting for Bartolo to take over the lead on this list by the end of the season. Wins by a Mets Pitcher After 40 1) Tom Glavine (20062007): 28 2) Orlando Hernandez (20062007): 18 3) Bartolo Colon (20142015): 16 4) Orel Hershiser (1999): 13 T5) Roberto Hernandez (20052006): 8 T5) John Franco (2001, 20032004): 8 7) Frank Tanana (1993): 5 8) Warren Spahn (1965): 4 T9) LaTroy Hawkins (2013): 3 T9) Miguel Batista (20112012): 3 11) David Cone (2003): 1
  3. That makes sense. It's a rare sort of case, however. And man, stress fracture of the back isn't pretty. I have a pet theory that I had ben working on that Campbell was only going down until he got a handful of games under his belt as a catcher, so he could come up and be a plausible emergency third-stringer. Obviously, if Mejia gets disabled, the eight-man pen gets shaved away before he could even take a bow on opening day for Las Vegas. So I guess, if they don't want to call him up just yet, they go back to eight-manning it, rather than call up Tovar or activating Muno, Reynolds, or Castellanos. Most likely to step in, then, would be Goeddel. 5. Jordan Zimmerdude starts Game Two, which is TWO WHOLE DAYS AWAY. Zimmermann should know better than to go up against The Hair, but he's a good soldier anyhow. A career Nat, Zim has started exactly 32 games each of the last three years, and is impressively improving as he gets older. He hasn't been kind to the Mets, going 7-5 / 2.98 against them in 20 starts over his career, including 3-0 / 2.13 in four starts last year. Daniel Murphy has had the most success against Zim, going .320 / .333 / .600 // .933 over 51 plate appearances in his career, including three homers and eight RBI. Kaz Matsui has also hurt him, but the Mets have him listed as unavailable for this series. Zimmerman is an efficient worker in a series marked by efficient workers, leading the league in walks-per-nine last year with 1.3. His bugbear in the past was contact, but last year he upped his strikeout rate from it's usual ~7/9 to about 8.2. That's damned effective. He has four pitches and has been a steady, consistent performer since TJ surgery early in his career. Remember, it's two N's at the end of his name, one at the end of Ryan's name.
  6. Three of five teams lose in the NL East, in addition to the Mets beating the Nats, Boston tore down Philly in the battle of Ben Frankly home towns, and Atlanta beats Miami, which beats the alternative, at least in theory. San Diego's recreation starts off no better than Chicago's, as the new Padres lose 6-3 to the new spending leaders Los Angeles.
  7. Zvon wrote: I still don't like Lags not leading off. Like I've said before, like Ronnie said today. You don't groom a guy to lead off, have him excel, and then not lead him off. TC will say he's protecting him from...what? The pressure? Bullshit. Every game counts. Time to take off the kid gloves T.C., and if you want Laggy to be the lead off guy, don't fuck with his head. Let him lead off. Granderson led all of baseball in OBP during Spring Training. That's not nothing. I'm sure Lagares will get his chances.
  8. Mets beat the Nats, 3-1. Nats lose to the Mets, 3-1. Yankees lose to Blue Jays, 6-1.
  9. Anywhich, Terry and the Mets get some degree of vindication for going with Colon.
  10. Breaking their closers on Opening Day it's a Met tradition!
  11. An injured closer: Reason #7 why you don't pull your relievers after one effective inning.
  12. Met #987: Jerry Blevins
  13. Mets open with Blevins to face Harper. Speculation that Mejia isn't coming in after him.
  14. Good contact, but into the defensive positioning. That's some 2014-era Grandy.
  15. Met #986: John Mayberry, Jr. Starts his Mets career with a pinch-walk. [fimg=550:wtk9stz2]http://imgick.nj.com/home/njo-media/width620/img/mets_main/photo/17352567-mmmain.jpg[/fimg:wtk9stz2]
  16. We should bring in Blevins to face den Dekker.
  17. Tap down the third-base line. A demonstration of why bunting against the shift is the smart play.
  18. Low-end weirdo sponsors who have returned: [list:2ckv47mm][*:2ckv47mm]yourmarketingsucks.com[/*:m:2ckv47mm] [*:2ckv47mm]Norman Seabrook New York City Correction Officer's Benevolent Association[/*:m:2ckv47mm][/list:u:2ckv47mm]
  19. I don't know. The 1969 designs are uninspired and derivative to be sure. But the circles are two-toned, good contrasts on the colors, and the fonts pop more than the dark-gray-against-the-light gray fake script of 1970. Plus the excellent portraiture features the players with their hats on, which means more color. I just realized that a lot of what I don't like about 1970s are a lot of indifferently coiffed hatless portraits. The 1969 portraits are heroic. The 1970 features the greatest player on the planet in what looks like hostage photo. I guess what I hate is all the gray. It's like they they're asking me to buy the car while it still has its primer coat on. Do me the honor of finishing it, and then we'll talk.
  20. Six-pitch inning. We need to do some scratching, Mets.
  21. Mets Guy in Michigan wrote: Just seeing all those cards in one place makes my day. I'm torn about which one I like best. Clearly the '72 Colon in action is a classic. The '77 Wright is perfection. The '76 Campbell looks like it just came out of a pack. I have fond memories of that set -- I pulled a Seaver in the first pack I opened that year, and declared I didn't have to buy another pack for the rest of the year, a vow that I believe lasted a day. I'll come out and say it. The battleship gray design of 1970 is about as depressing as anything Topps ever did. Makes me feel bad to look at — real bad — and speaks of no era in particular so much as an era in which people don't care about anything, and the player doesn't seem distinct with regard to his position or his team. It says, "My friends all got real Topps baseball cards but my parents got me this generic off-brand cardboard crap." That it was the design on which the Mets most miraculous victory was celebrated is like the team's second historical damning, after their misbegotten birth. That said, the 1971–1974 cards are a dream. Those designers belong in the Hall of Fame.

  23. That's the strangest part of it. Your dignity is lost waiting in line for two innings, just for an opportunity to relieve yourself in a manner that is a second and final assault on your dignity.
  24. Murphy has made a few of us a little richer.
