  1. Started in 1985 at the Metrodome. Ken Griffey is the only three-time champ. More history from the Wikipedia.
  2. Centerfield wrote: He's raking at AAA. He's not even at AAA. He's barely had more than a month at AA.

  4. Splitting off from the home run contest thread, I was braining about who the best f/s hitting teams were. Plucking candidates from my memory (mostly), I scored the the way Bill James once did when he was trying to figure out the top baseball clans, combining the WARs, but doubling the WAR for the lesser-achieving player. The only other rule was there had to be two generations who actually played big league ball, however passingly. Else, Babe Ruth and Ted Williams would be in the top five even without a big league father or son. Also, I counted only offensive WAR. Sorry Schofields, but that was the question. If you count step-parents and why shouldn't you? our men Mookie and Preston are a higher-achieving pair than I might have guessed. And Ray Boone, who knew you were so good? #Better PlayerWARLesser PlayerWARAdjusted Total1Barry Bonds142.6=#0040FF]Bobby Bonds51.6245.82Ken Griffey, Jr.83.8=#0040FF]Ken Griffey, Sr.41.1166.03=#FF4000]Buddy Bell47.3=#0040FF]Gus Bell24.195.54=#FF4000]Roberto Alomar70.0=#0040FF]Sandy Alomar, Sr.7.885.65=#FF4000]Pete Rose, Sr.82.2=#0040FF]Pete Rose, Jr.-0.182.06=#FF4000]Prince Fielder35.0=#0040FF]Cecil Fielder19.974.87=#FF4000]Maury Wills38.1=#0040FF]Bump Wills15.168.38=#FF4000]Tim Raines, Sr.68.4=#0040FF]Tim Raines, Jr.-0.567.49=#FF4000]Tony Gwynn, Sr.66.2=#0040FF]Tony Gwynn, Jr.-0.465.410=#FF4000]Gary Matthews, Sr.39.2=#0040FF]Gary Matthews, Jr.12.263.611=#FF4000]Hal McRae29.7=#0040FF]Brian McRae16.963.512=#FF4000]Buddy Bell47.3=#0040FF]David Bell8.163.513=#FF4000]Yogi Berra56.5=#0040FF]Dale Berra3.463.314=#FF4000]Bret Boone28.2=#0040FF]Bob Boone15.960.015=#FF4000]Ray Boone27.4=#0040FF]Bob Boone15.959.216=#FF4000]Mookie Wilson20.5=#0040FF]Preston Wilson14.749.917=#FF4000]Buddy Bell47.3=#0040FF]Mike Bell0.047.318=#FF4000]Bob Boone15.9=#0040FF]Aaron Boone13.342.519=#FF4000]Andy Van Slyke37.1=#0040FF]Scott Van Slyke2.642.320=#FF4000]Danny Tartabull35.2=#0040FF]Jose Tartabull0.736.621=#FF4000]John Mayberry, Sr.27.8=#0040FF]John Mayberry, Jr.3.134.022=#FF4000]Sandy Alomar, Jr.13.7=#0040FF]Sandy Alomar, Sr.7.829.323=#FF4000]Todd Hundley15.8=#0040FF]Randy Hundley5.927.624=#FF4000]Dick Schofield14.1=#0040FF]Ducky Schofield6.527.125=#FF4000]Jerry Hairston, Jr.10.4=#0040FF]Jerry Hairston, Sr.6.222.826=#FF4000]Eric Young, Sr.19.6=#0040FF]Eric Young, Jr.1.522.627=#FF4000]Ben Grieve15.9=#0040FF]Tom Grieve3.021.928=#FF4000]Nick Swisher23.9=#0040FF]Steve Swisher-2.618.729=#FF4000]Dave Duncan9.8=#0040FF]Chris Duncan3.717.230=#FF4000]Jerry Hairston, Sr.6.2=#0040FF]Scott Hairston5.316.831=#FF4000]Tony Pea, Sr.18.7=#0040FF]Tony Pea, Jr.-2.214.332=#FF4000]Dave Duncan9.8=#0040FF]Shelley Duncan1.212.233=#FF4000]Ozzie Virgil, Jr.11.7=#0040FF]Ozzie Virgil, Sr.-1.19.5

  8. Former second-round pick of the Twins (2006). Got into 21 games for Minnesota back in 2011. Released by the Braves in June and catches on now with the Mets. Assigned to Binghamton, where tea-leaf readers may see him put there to shore up the team following the imminent promotion of Nimforto. 9. I wouldn't take anyone under 10. The high concept that is hard to wrap yourself around with at least some schooling. Except the headache-inducing candy colors are anathema to many who are over 10. Agreed that Sadness carries the day. Not fair that Joy is shaped like a Disney sprite while poor Sadness is such an amorphous shlub.
  10. Nine years later and I'm still waiting on Kim Shamsky's tell all book on her and Art's shocking marriage and tumultuous divorce. OE: Referenced in the 2006 WW thread. Follow the link and then search for "Sham." In the same post, Anna Benson foreshadows her less-than-shocking future breakdown and gun-related arrest.
  11. Great report and photos. Imagination sometimes seems almost illegal in the batter's box. Don't try something new or you'll screw up your swing for a month. Only the Cuban guys are different, because (1) they are born fully formed and (2) the batting coaches are afraid of them. Did the Pail hang onto his Nieuwenhuis shirt?
  12. >>> "We left Paul Giammatti on Mars. Alive." >>>>>> "Oh, that's so sad!" >>> "And it would take like four years and two billion dollars to get back there to rescue him. We left Matt Damon on Mars." >>>>>> "AND WHY ARE WE SITTING HERE TALKING ABOUT IT?!!" >>> "Well it would take like..." >>>>>> "SHUT UP!!!"
  13. Buddy Carlyle, meanwhile, appears to have had hip surgery and seems to be done for the season.
  14. Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo represented the Mets (and the United States) in the Futures game. Conforto went 22 with a run scored and an outfield assist. Nimmo went 12 with an RBI and a run scored.
  15. Good to see Met Hunter around, if for all the wrong reasons. Met Hunter, that relative you like, and make a note to not just meet up with at weddings and wakes, but you never do.
  16. Sorry to mess up Botelho's name. I actually kind of remember him well (as well as could be expected). He was a sad sacrificial lamb an over-his-head call-up during a period where Chicago had pretty much their entire starting rotation (which had been a fantastic recycled veteran unit in 1984) on the disabled list. I think he gave up two homers to Gary Carter in his very next start. Meridith was an emergency fill-in also, I think.
  17. Minor League All Stars can be a mixed bag. Many of your minor leaguers enjoying their best seasons won't taste All Star glory because they were promoted just before the All Star Game. Some are climbing stars and others veterans who are outclassing their peers because it's their third season at the level. Some come from small leagues, where the roster is comprised from six teams in the southern division playing six teams in the northern division, while others represent leagues where the entire league pools it's best for an inter-league All Star game against another league at the same level. That said, here are your Mets minor league All Stars. 18. I had just tuned in after getting out of mass. He observed somebody's number and said "You know, there's just a GRR-REAT website called 'Mets by the Numbers' tells the Mets story through the prism of the uniform numbers and the men who wore... HOLYFUCKINGSHITT!! KIRK NIEUWENHUIS JUST DID IT AGAIN!!!!" I was so doubly excited that it took me something like five tries to note the reference in a post with my mobile device. Howie sounds just terrific by the way, and it was cool to hear him doing his Tony the Tiger imitation while talking about MbtN.

  20. Oberkfell was the bench coach during Terry's first season with the Mets, before the Mets grew unhappy with the bench's performance, and brought in Bob Geren. What a weird card this is with Teddy wearing his Cardinals' home uniform at Shea, while the coachie hits fungos in his more appropriate road uniform in the background.
  21. Today's win ups the Mets' all-time winning percentage to .478617, which rounds up nicely to .479. Having lost their first boatload of games back in 1962, the Mets have been fighting uphill for the life of their existence. This fight peaked on May 31, 2009, when John Maine went six shutout innings against Philadelphia and Chris Vodstadt. After Pedro Feliciano added a seventh, J.J. Putz, handed a 3-0 lead in the eighth, immediately started giving it back before the unlikely hero in the guise of Bobby Parnell bailed the Mets out before turning the game over to Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth, thus achieving the Mets highest all-time winning percentage of .480261. They'll hopefully be back above .480 rather soon. They certainly will if Philadelphia keeps sending the likes of Chris Voldstadt out after us. Go Mets!
  22. Man, they've amazingly gone from the most airtight bullpen in the league to the most porous.
  23. To be distinguished easily from the Father's Day Game. #MetsCelebrateWins
  24. Howie throws down a shoutout to mbtn.net and Kirk celebrates with a second kaboomie.
  25. 1. Some good teams do a good job overcoming injuries. Some by luck or by some elusive skill never to have to do confront that. The Mets' two championship teams, for instance, suffered very little in terms of injuries. Between them, the main injury was to Bruce Berenyi. So, no, it isn't particularly true to suggest that good teams, by definition, overcome injuries. 2. I disagree that the 2015 Mets have not built depth to overcome injuries (or "done a poor job to secure depth for their team"). They haven't particularly done well at all in simultaneously replacing David Wright, Daniel Murphy, and Travis d'Arnaud, but they've shown themselves to be dazzlingly prepared to endure injuries (and suspensions) to Zack Wheeler, Josh Edgin, Bobby Parnell, Vic Black, Jenrry Mejia, Jerry Blevins, Buddy Carlyle, Erik Goeddel, and Steven Matz. And the Mets are a good team. Sixth-best team in the league as of this morning.
