  1. Guy behind home plate waiving at the camera for your friends, turn in your jersey.
  2. Wright second and Cespedes third is a treat. Put Duda between 'em and watch the thunda. Easy to forget, but Wright was batting second at the start of the season before he went down.
  3. Benjamin Grimm wrote: No Murphy, Cuddyer, or Flores. Is Wilmer still away from the team? Murph is hobbled. Cuddyer is mostly starting against lefties these days. Wilmer was expected back with the team this evening, but I expect Terry doesn't want to throw him out there right away. So they're going with Johnson at first, who I'd probably put at number five on the depth chart over there.
  4. Gavin has landed the coveted Eastern League Rookie of the Year trophy. Tough noogies for you, Gabriel Ynoa! Coming down the homestretch at .317 / .377 / .442 // .819. Seven homers and 51 ribs in 109 games. Brilliant.
  5. Adam Rubin reporting that the Mets will ride Harvey like a Turkish stallion in the playoffs, blast past any innings limits, and laugh and point whenever Boras sticks his head up above the water. He further reports that Harvey will sign with the Yankees at his earliest opportunity and become the first player ever to hit the disabled list over an injury that incurred while signing his contract. Yankees Pitching Coach Lawrence Lee "Larry" Rothschild will decry that the Mets over-worked Harvey's signing musles by forcing him to sign all those baseballs and programs for children. Dan Warthan will officially respond with the words "Ho, ho, ho." After missing all six years of his Yankee contract with the exception of occasional rehab games, the Mets will sign Harvey to an incentive laden minor league deal. He'll eventually get into good enough shape to proved 14 more-or-less successful garbage innings down the stretch, but the zip won't be there, and the pain won't go away, and Harvey will retire at the end of the 2025 season, focusing on his marriage and skin care product endorsements. It seems Rubin did a lot of ground work on that piece.
  6. If the Mets go 23-6 (or better!) the rest of the way, they will have bested their highest-ever all-time winning percentage, which currently residing at .480261 (Sunday, May 31, 2009). What a day. The next day you lose, but... just a minor setback, you think, and then that setback goes on for years. Decades, if you're not careful.
  7. I'm almost positive he's going to be an NRI for the Mets come March.
  8. I don't think anybody accepts coupons. John Mayberry supposedly came to the Mets at a cheaper rate than the Cardinals were offering because he thought he'd get more trips to the plate and be able to put up some loftier stats for next year's market. Oops. But such bets against the future aside, I don't think anybody accepts coupons. If Harvey signs here, it's because the Mets are getting him at the price they think he's worth. I'm not sweating it. I'm confident the Mets hope to lock up core talent. I'm more confident that they hope to sweep through the post-season first.
  9. That's pretty much what would have to happen. But it's not what Boras is angling for. He's criticizing but not insisting. And certainly not putting his client in the position of insisting. That way, when Harvey gets injured down the road which experience suggests will happen, sooner or later he has planted the seeds to retro-shame the team. LOLMETS!!11!! I just need to get me some Quallcomm.
  10. I don't know, but I certainly hope that if he becomes a Yankee, he never becomes a true one.
  11. No agent wants to hit free agency with an injured pitcher. Neither does he want to hit free agency with a pitcher whose agent begs him off the post-season roster. If Boras is in earnest, he should have made his case in private.
  12. That's OK, just... well... it's not a good day for Tom Koehler to end his funk.
  13. Conflating is a lot like confusing. In fact, the two terms are often conflated and confused.
  14. Chihuahuas kicking some Vegas butt tonight. It's 7-1 after 6 innings with the lone run coming on a Nimmo solo shot. First place in jeopardy.
  15. They really gutted themselves, though, didn't they? I understand the teardown that has to take place in order to have a future, but you threaten the future too by forcing the few remaining players you hope to be a part of it to carry on in such a hopeless and demoralizing present. But now, I guess it's all about the new park with them. The 2015 Braves: As good an argument for relegation as I can come up with.
  16. Wow, clever move, Fartolo! I imagine he volunteered for bullpen duty with the Schaefer trophy in his sites.
  17. Magic. That Cuddy card looks like it came right out of that year's set.
  18. That's what Terry wants you to think! Talk to me Saturday. Eric Young or Eric Campbell will be in the lineup.
  19. The two big ones in my mind are Doug Flynn, because it happened for a poor hitter on a very weak offensive club somehow in the midst of a 10-run inning, and Marlon Anderson, because he blew a bubble rounding second.
  20. So, I'm guessing that Murphy sits out the Miami games and Cuddy is our first baseman. Maybe Campbell gets a start against Brad Hand. Maybe he bats cleanup!
  21. That's what I get for going to sleep.
  22. Wally Backman's 51s tied 1-1 with Jami Quirk's Chihuahuas. Travis Tajeiron has his 25th homer. A win would cut the magic number from 6 to 4 with five games left on the schedule after this. Unfortunately, two of these will be against these same Chihuahuas.
  23. Your New York Mets are now a .500 team back to Wednesday, September 6, 1978. This takes us back to a feckless 8-2 loss to Montreal, the only highlight of which was Dan Norman hitting his first career homer in only his second big-league game. I really think he's going to be something. [fimg=800]http://www.ultimatemets.com/scorecard_graph.php?game=2747&font=1[/fimg] The .500 record now goes back 5,858 games. The all-time Mets also now sport a .4793099 winning percentage, the team's highest since .4793686 on Monday, July 8, 2012.
  24. Here's a flashback to one of (I think) two threads on the matter. It also triggered the famed Battle of the Bridesmaids.
