The director should have pulled the plug on this five minutes ago.

Geno Auriemmia is one slow talker. Not an easy assignment for Steve Gelbs. The playoffs may begin before this interview winds up. And college basketball players aren't "girls," Steve.

I'm not sure, if you're using the same personnel, you want to put the one you want to "hide" at second.

That's when you slide into first.

Where else would they go?

Lest it be overlooked, today being September 1 means the Mets have pulled off a rather rare achievement for them, successfully carrying a Rule V player for the entire season, thus fully securing the rights to the player. I guess the last time they pulled off that trick was with reserve first baseman/pinch hitter Eric Valent, and that was when they didn't have a nettleson pennant race getting in the way.

I believe all these deals were final before September 1, so all the principles are eligible for the post-season.

Three teams with October hopes added outfielders just before the bell yesterday, all of them CLEARLY intimidated by the Mets' addition of Eric Young. Austin Jackson from the Mariners to the Cubs for a player to be named. Jonny Gomes from whatever's left of the Braves to the Royals for minor league infielder Luis Valenzuela. Alejandro De Aza (who went 0-7 with two walks against the Mets this weekend), from the Red Sox to the Giants for high A left-hander Luis Ysla, who doesn't seem shy about handing out the walks. De Aza earlier this season went from Baltimore to Boston. If the Giants bring him into the post-season, he could end up facing the Mets in three different uniforms in one season. I'm assuming all three could have been claimed by the Mets. Maybe not De Aza, as the Giants now have a worse record than the Mets, but perhaps didn't at the time of the waivers.

It's sorta a splitter. It seemed like having an extra weapon was confusing Jeurys and Recker yesterday in what they should go for, and it can be that carrying an extra pitch with it's own philosophy is challenging him a little.

Cuddy starting in Flores' place today.

Something's fishy down at the Syndicate, as that link makes no Metly mention.

Steven Matz threw for Binghamton yesterday, going 5.1 innings, giving up 1 hit, 0 runs, walking 2 and striking out 4. He left with a 2-0 lead but his Bingo-pen blew that up for him and they lost 6-2. He's un-scored upon in 15 innings during his rehabilitation. I'm guessing he's done with that noise. On the other hand, the Mets may want him to join Las Vegas for the playoffs.

Cuddy, you Phillie-killer!

I know I want to love him but I can't decide.

I just realized that it's September 1, and Marc Rzepczynski is officially not happening. Or, if it did happen, he'd be ineligible for the post-season. At least, he would be, barring some cheat-tastic maneuvering-type stuff.

The post-season is a crapshoot. The Mets had as good a team as God will allow to exist in 1986, and they still had to BS their way through October. I'm taking it one day at a time.

batmagadanleadoff wrote: Edgy MD wrote: Thing is, the team we'll see over the summer will have a meaningfully different composition from the team we've seen much of the spring. Even if Wright doesn't ever return, the relaunching of d'Arnaud, Murphy, and Herrera, to say nothing of possible contributions on the pitching staff coming from Syndergaard, Matz, Parnell, Black, Mejia, Leathersich, Blevins, Montero, Carlyle, our guest from A-ball, etc., will define much of the team's fortunes going forward. That's the better part of a pitching staff right there. How could you forget to consider who the Mets might pick up when some other loser teams that aren't the Mets throw in the towel and go into dump mode? Whoah.

It's the same in Vegas, only moreso, as a solid game is blown up by the bullpen in the ninth. This time proved fatal, however, as the 51s entered the ninth up 5-3 and Scott Rice and John Church conspired to throw the game back to El Paso, giving up three runs, and ultimately, the victory. Some associate Rice and Church with weddings. Wally Backman is going to associate them with lost pennants, as the setback closes the Las Vegas lead in the PCL Southern Division to a half a game (!!). Logan Verrett, on loan from the big league club, opposes El Paso's Jason Lane, still grinding it out at the age of 38 to the tune of a 5.71 ERA. You may remember Jason from such films as Young Power-Hitting Astros Outfielder and 35-Year-Old Washout Turns to Pitching. He's only appeared in three big-league games since 2007. Almost makes you want to root for him. Almost.

Clinching Labor Day has its appeal, as does a .413.

Vegas and Paso tied 2-2 after six. Cody Satterwhite on in relief of Darin Gorski. Matt Reynolds has a homer, his sixth.

Buddy Carlyle's needs are ill-considered as Reed is rewarded with his traditional 43. Next problem is Eric Young, as Plawecki is second- or third-string catching in his old 22. The 51s are left with Monell and Rohlfing as catchers, and both aren't really catchers all, but really hitters who catch. They need a shot of Vitabmin X. Xorge Carillo, baby. Well, the tying run is off base. So much for the un-blemished August. Now let's win.
