  1. Look at yourself . You just look stupid. Ray Knight to a Nats fan who came by the set of his post-game show with a bag on his head
  2. Also, for meaningfully long segments of that 10-week period where good pitching every day was keeping them alive even as the offense tried to sink them, Curtis Granderson was utterly NOT sucking, and was usually the only thing the team had going offensively, apart from the pretty-good-for-a-pitcher offense they were getting out of the nine hole. To me, just as remarkable as the surge was them staying in good enough position that it mattered through those long periods of noodle-battedness.
  3. I had some gastric pain last weekend where it seemed like I was trying to personally eliminate Atlanta. Don't ask.
  4. I'm riding with the Bandit.
  5. I imagine Conforto will hit lefties, but it's not like the way they're doing it now isn't working.
  6. Amazing how so many threads, even IGTs, turn into offseason planning threads. Hey! Fantasy boyz! THIS IS THE FANTASY! Be here NOW!
  7. deGrom really seems to be having fun with his teammates. Even on his pitching days, when he's supposed to be surly and detached, he seems engaged. In fact, he's a great model for Harvey, who was in the celebratory scrum after his team got him off that huge hook two days ago, even if he did still seem like he just swallowed a lemon.
  8. I don't know. Cespedes is playing great. Our top player. But there's a lot going on beyond beast mode. I mean Kelly Johnson. I just don't want to get caught up too much in the monster narrative, lest any notion permeate the culture that the team will crash as soon as Cespedes levels off.
  9. I guess the next question regards most consecutive games with a save.
  10. Not un-noticed in the "Where Mets Rank" thread. When was the last time a Met saved all three games of a series?
  11. Yankees lose so we get the TH. Blue Jays don't cooperate, however. Dodgers losing to the Angels in Anaheim. A loss puts the Mets within two games of 'em. Victory by Texas over Houston pulls them within 3 1/2 of the Yankees. Minnesota tied with KC in extras, trying to pul within 5 1/2.
  12. There are actually three Mrs. Matt Williamses out there. Interesting fact: Matt Williams' grandfather played six games for the 1924 Washington Senators, the only World Series winner in DC history.
  13. So long, September 1978. The Mets are at least a .500 team over their last 5,872 games, going back to Wednesday, August 30, 1978, an improvement of 3 games. The Mets are at least a .490 team over their last 8,110 games, going back to Saturday, September 26, 1964, an improvement of 1 game. The Mets are at least a .480 team over their last 8,572 games, going back to Saturday, April 28, 1962, an improvement of 5 games. The team's all-time winning percentage is now .4794409, and I'm starting to think an all-time .480 is reachable this season. They would have to go 16-7 the rest of the way. They win tomorrow and their all-time winning percentage would round up to .480.

And I seem to remember you signing with Washington, bragging about how you were excited for the opportunity to have 18 games to make the Mets pay for their poor judgement in not re-signing you. Maybe that was someone else, you bandwagon-jumper.
  15. Terry sure seems to know whose number to call to pinch-hit these days.
  16. Mets can't win this unless they spot the Nats six more runs.
  17. On the other hand, d'Arnaud ain't afraid of no dogs.

  19. I think this thread needs to be framed for posterity. [fimg=400:2jpuzwm9]http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/avgn/images/3/3b/AVGNGhostbusters.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20090418150545[/fimg:2jpuzwm9]
  20. It has to be repeated, that while the starting rotation has been somewhat less than great (maybe fourth or fifth best in the National League), they certainly were great for the 10 weeks that they had to be, allowing the team to tread water just long enough to get to the magic time when three hitterowskis were acquired, two were healed, and one got promoted. The funny thing is that as little as the Plawecki/Monell/Recker/Campbell/Herrera/Nieuwenhuis/Ceciliani et al crew gave the team as a B-squad forced into too much A-squad duty from late spring to mid-summer, it's kind of cool to have most of them around now as a C-squad. REDEMPTION FOR EVERYBODY!!
  21. The tinkererer in me says to flip Wright and Cespedes. And then to flip Murphy and Duda. And then to flip Murphy and Conforto. He's an annoying little tinkererer.
  22. Edgy MD wrote: By the way, Dilson starts tonight. I'm calling it. How disappointing. It's passing strange to keep in looking at the evening's lineup and think that they #3 batter isn't looking all that impressively better than the #8 batter. But, you know, in a good way.
  23. I'd probably let any Met short of Lenny Dykstra and Ambiorix Burgos live in my basement, rent free. And both cases would be more out of fear than hate. Kong could live up-stairs. And have my bed!
  24. I don't think it's about one extra inning, so much as needing a warmup for general sharpness.
  25. From 1987 to 1989, Tommy LaSorda rode Orel Hershiser to death. He led the league in innings three straight years, and pitched an amazing 42 2/3 post-season innings in 1988, carrying his team to a World Championship. He was never the same again. Maybe his subsequent injury was unrelated to his workload, but it seems pretty self-evident that it cost him the Hall of Fame. The Mets ain't Tommy LaSorda. They've been trying to manage this all year, no matter what Tom Boswell says. If he gets hurt, it ain't for lack of foresight.
