Surpised to find out that this is Trammell's last year on the ballot. I'm a long-time supporter. He's weird in that his hitting was either outstanding or not particularly good, from year to year, but overall, I find him pretty comparable to Barry Larkin.

But Buddy Carlyle will not be one of them. Buddy, our opening day hero, collecting the save in the face of the unreadiness of Jenrry Mejia, before the suspension, which came before the other suspension. Hope he gets a post-season share. I'd say, all in all, there's a good chance this is not the last we've seen of everybody's favorite midcentury lounge lizard. Let's All Chip In With Our Thoughts on Xander Bogaerts
Edgy MD replied to a topic in New York Mets Talk
Can we get that one undone? -

Vic Sage wrote: Good players have longer, more consistently productive careers than good pitchers. It's heartbreaking, isn't it? I remember a video 10 years back of young NL East guys Ryan Howard, David Wright, and Dontrelle Willis messing about and zinging each other. Howard is winding down. Folks argue about how much Wright may be winding down. But Willis has been out of the game for over four years, and was ineffective for four years before that. Other guys feel their athleticism wind down. For pitchers, their viability is there, then it isn't. Yeah, new science has allowed us to rebuild the arm, but sustaining a high level of effectiveness is a crapshoot. An 11th grade female soccer player with a catastrophic knee injury seemingly has a better chance of returning to peak performance than a professional baseball player with a catastrophic elbow or shoulder injury.

Edgin started off roughly two weeks ahead of Wheeler, but yeah, relievers have a somewhat faster schedule, because they aren't being built up to go nine. Or six. Or whatever.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Marlins are fools to take the take the bait. There's something to be said for this perspective here, but does Alderson get points (with the media or with fans) when he coolly deflects when asked about Boras' broadsides?

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Simmons would give us a great glove, but he hasn't progressed as a hitter the way the Braves hoped. He also doesn't do much as a basestealer. He's also one of those guys they signed for a long time (till 2020). He's got a lot in common with Lagares, which might make a good starting place for a trade package. I don't think that top 10 list above is published by the Mets, so much as MLB.com, but I tend to agree with the idea of sticking with what the team has while their assets are growing at that position. The problem, of course, with that attitude is that it butts up against the now-is-our-window-of-opportunity attitude. I have little knowledge whatsoever of this Milton Ramos character. Definitely sounds more like a catcher. And beyond that, he sounds more like a Minnesota Twin.
-
Which pros would that be? Well, Dombrowski and Alderson to start with. Their lieutenants after that. Please forgive me. Laid up as I am, I'm not sure which level I'm getting aboard the conversation. I don't know if this has been reportedly discussed or is just Simon Says media-generated speculation.
-
Do we have any reason to believe something like such a deal has been discussed among the pros?

Centerfield wrote: I freakin' love our rotation. I'm not sure I can speak objectively about this. Besides. I think anyone named "Mookie" should automatically be a Met. Sure, but they shouldn't have to give anybody up. It should just be a Mets right of first refusal..

I'll support the Marlins on this one. Boras has every right and responsibility to advocate for his players, but his using the media for leverage poisons the well. It demonstrates bad faith and sets up the team to be holding the bag no matter what. It doesn't make the Marlins right, but come on. Unless/until you think that the team is being irredeemably malfeasant, keep the conversation in the room.
-
Harper's nonetheless getting ahead of things. José Reyes' agent courted suitors. When the Mets approached him, he asked them to name how high they were willing to go. They named it, and formal offer or not, the agent took that number to the Marlins and had them top it. I should be so shunned.

seawolf17 wrote: Electronic Torres is even more impressive than I thought. He actually is the all-time MLB leader in WHIP at 0.964, just ahead of Addie Joss and Billy Wagner, and third in opponent AVG and OBP. What magic happened in 2015? He came to the Mets and instantly ended a long history of walking a lot of people.

I missed the shunning. He made his own choices.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Does anyone understand the nuances of Desmond's struggles this year -- injury? personal turmoil? over the hill? Bad relationship with management? Because he at least once was a good+ player, albeit one who whiffs a little too much. You figure he's the kind of player some team will gamble on fixing with a good hitting coach or something. I dunno, but he peaked in August after having a sit-down with Cal Ripken. He crashed back down in September, but so did his whole demoralized team. Heh-heh. If the Mets wanna go really cheap, of course, it's Tejada and Flores up the middle, with Herrera, Reynolds, and Cecchini pressing from below.
-
And yet, the Mets offer it, and Murphy's representatives are likely advising him to reject it. So a lot of professional minds differ with you on that opinion.
-
We could make an eleventh "EVERYONE SELECT THIS" option to give a more guaranteed number. I actually thought of that. But then I become even more of a nanny, going, "Will everyone PLEASE remember to add the 'Everyone Select This' option to your polls? And will all voters PLEASE remember to select it? Else our data is worthless and it's all just an exercise in pushing buttons. Which I guess it is anyhow but still." I'm annoying myself just thinking about it. I went under the hood. No luck. Got good and greasy though. who didn't vote for Griffey? Welcome to the pool, Murray Chass!
-
The two situations are grave either way.
-
It'll be a matter of weeks. If Gary Cohen calls it the Home Depot Deck or the Bleacher Report Bleachers, I have no doubt the culture will fall in line. Bud Harrelson was the shortstop for a decade, and then he wasn't. And he was a human being. Folks move on.
-
Assuming that the Mike vote is 100%, that gives us a Crane Class of Piazza, Griffey, Bagwell, and Raines (coming in with exactly 75% percent). Maybe I should look under the hood and see if we can have polls report the number of ballots cast, and report each ballot item in terms of votes/ballots, rather than votes/total votes, which isn't very useful.
-
Unless it is, you know? Ugly. Ugly and awful.

I have not. But I am prepared to offer a favorable critique of Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown. Or, as we called it in the day, Genus Enim Animarum Vestrarum, Carolus Fuscus.
