  1. Carlos Diaz and Bob Bailor for Sid Fernandez. What a heist. And amazing that we traded one Spanish-surnamed Hawaiian for another. I imagined that's the only time that has happened. I'm a BIG fan of the 1983 Mets, but never knew he was nicknamed "Bimbo."
  2. I think we saw from the number of plate appearances Cuddyer got in the World Series that he's in a show-me situation. If he gets a lot of starts, it probably means he's earned them, or injuries have left them without better options. My main disappointment in him last season was his declining to play third. He saw first hand that Campbell was performing like a liability. He said he wasn't comfortable. But with Wright out four months, he had ample time to make himself comfortable. His utility was, to me, part of the justification for his signing.

  4. If Smith comes strong, bloody hell.

Look for the Mets to salary dump Niese and his $9M no matter what happens. Well, you said that last year too. I'm guessing it's a moot point. Murphy likely won't accept it because nobody does.
  8. Smokey was a Nationals pick, not Seattle. The Mets have sure been collecting guys who sound like they could be a helluva door-slamming closer: Lance Broadway Vic Black Jack Leathersich Josh Smoker That's not a bullpen, there. That's a street gang (if only a cartoon one). There is still time, of course for the last few, technically. Kane Davis — there's a guy who sounds like he could stuff his enemies into the trunk and drive out to the desert. Man, they totally should've signed Damian Magnifico.

  10. Third best right fielder in baseball according fWAR and win probability.
  11. Wish I could find our bizarre, accidental Sound of Music tribute thread. Schoeneweis Schoeneweis Left-hand pitcher forever!

  13. QUEENS FOR A DAY is just goofy copywriting. I mean, they're dudes, and they're not dressing up in lady's clothing, either. Yeah, they play in Queens, but they play there EVERY day. At least, every day there's a home game. But the game this story is describing was on the road. So it's all bad. Puns, I must confess, aren't inherently bad. Desperately forced puns that don't actually describe what they purport to describe are bad. But I voted for that one, because the composition of that layout is award-winning stuff. Congratulations to the staffer(s) who laid out that bad boy.
  14. Indeed noo. I'm survived they outlived poor Recker and Wilfredo. BtW, I'm not sure they both become minor league free agents or have to pass through waivers or what.
  15. Virtually all closeups of Harvey's face strike me as distasteful. Especially in action. Always looks like something nasty is going to come out of his mouth.
  16. The problem is signing a guy and convincing yourself that he's one big bat and he's not. The idea that the team can absorb mistakes and move on is appealing, but for all teams, that thinking has its limits, and the critical mass of mistakes was a big part of what got the team in the mess in the first place. So I'll take wise over aggressive, no matter what the market size. I think they're going to be fine. And if they don't find their guy by opening day, they can keep looking as they did in 2015.
  17. It's funny. Murphy might end up being that guy who gets totally screwed by the qualifying offer. The guy who other teams think might be a good piece but they don't want to give him a multi-year contract and give up a first-round draft pick. On the other hand, he could sign with a bottom tier team like Colorado. They would only give up a second-round pick and he'd hit the ball all over the place in Denver. I'm probably crazy, but I could totally see him putting up a four-digit OPS in that park.
  18. soupcan wrote: This black Mets hat, would be fine with me IF they only wore it on the road with the grey unis that say 'NEW YORK' across them. Other than that, I have no use for any black anywhere on any Met uniform. This one is simply fucking atrocious and never should be spoken of ever again. I have no problem with black Mets hats on the head of civilians, but they shouldn't be on Mets. However, royal blue (any blue, really) clashes with black. The bottom hat would look fine if they stripped the blue and the white off the insignia and let the orange insignia stand alone, rather than relegating it unjustly to a drop shadow. It's like they had old New York Giants hats but were ashamed of them. And Curtis looks great in Mets clothes. He looks like a ballplayer.
  19. It's a colorless blue, relatively speaking.
  20. Johnny Monell Sr. joins Kevin Maine among Met properties who peaked in the high minors but got to to see their sons go all the way to the big team: He caught himself some serious Julio. Machado and Valera.
  21. Congratulations to a left-hander who's a known joker with a league-wide reputation for being a midnight token. And he won't even make you feel like an asshole for doing so. Much. May start an Instagram account with, like, "I'm Drunken, Stranded LWFS" as the handle, maybe. I've probably told this story, but at my dad's wake, I met a guy named Tim Condon. I only type his name in full because there's got to be a thousand Tim Condons in the tri-state area. I had perhaps met Mr. Condon when I was a child, but I'm not sure. But I knew him, because my dad had a half a dozen Tim Condon stories he told with great regularity. But Tim came up to me that night and told me the granddaddy of 'em all. About how he had to come and pay tribute to my dad that evening because my dad gave him the mother of all "3AM-I'm-drunk-and-stranded-and-not-sure-where-I-am" pickup of all time. I and I think I can speak for Tim Condon also can think of no finer tribute to Curtis Granderson.
  23. Something so cool about when a guy goes from the Yankees to the Mets. Especially now that the Mets have shed that noxious black hat habit. Yeah, maybe he has to prove he's not evil and all of that. But there is something about seeing him in the blue had with popping orange coming out of it after years in the colorless, joyless Yankee kit, that makes it look like he just got out of jail. I'm like, "Hey, look who got let out. Good for him. He looks pretty good, considering." Seriously, who among you can deny that Carlos Beltran has looked like a convict for the last few years?

  25. I hear you. His speech was just kind of insane, considering he didn't play in the post-season and only played 12 games for the team all season.
