Asking your neighbors to join you in re-celebrating your baby's birth every month will get diminishing attendance and increasingly indiscreet eye rolls, and eventually devalue birthdays and other, realer, more compelling milestones. I mean, you're also in the legacy business, trying to sustain an ongoing relationship with your fans. Let's keep it real. The Mets, by the way have surpassed the Yankees in ratings.
  2. Zvon wrote: It's not just being 6 games back of WSH, it's being ahead of 3 of these 4 teams: LAD, MIA, STL, PIT. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/standings/wildcard.jsp Wild Card is a mid-September word. Agreed. I don't even look at those standings before the break. Usually not until the dog days settle in early August. I work so hard on them.
  3. That's a pretty thoughtful post by Steve I think. I remember the old MoFo, where the folks most abusive to the Mets poorer players were the ones most nostalgic for the poorer players of days gone by (*cough* Doug Flynn *cough*). Folks love to demand it both ways. To review, the Mets have hired, in one capacity or another, Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez, Wally Backman, Tim Teufel, Mookie Wilson, Ron Darling, Lee Mazzilli, Howard Johnson, Randy Niemann, John Gibbons, and Bob Ojeda. And that's just the guys who've gotten more-or-less full-time gigs. Darryl Strawberry, empty though his relationship might be, has been retained on more than one occasion as a spring training instructor. Darryl can say what he wants, and I'm sure it's partly fans egging him into their narrative, partly the interviewer egging him into a statement that's controversial enough to make the papers, partly just him just being in a mood, and partly, you know, probably kind of true. (Who wouldn't be surprised if Jeff kept Darryl Strawberry at arm's length?) He can say what he wants but in the end, it's just another guy filling time on the radio. Stay healthy and sober, Darryl.
  4. By the way, Eli Marrero. Amazin'. Did we really have a Bench Player of the Month in 2006, or was he retroactively awarded.
  5. Psst ... you're pulling an Edgy there ... and have left your vestigial "May" headline in your post.
  6. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Edgy MD wrote: I don't know why we should divide by the number of at-bats. Longevity counts. Otherwise, retire Céspedes number now. You're right. I guess Ed Kranepool was a way better Mets hitter than Cespedes because Krane accumulated a lot more of everything than Cespedes. Then we're good. Please realize, in the midst of this sarcasm, that Céspedes has already surpassed Kranepool in WAR for the Mets, at least according to baseball-reference, so let's stay on topic.
  7. I don't know why we should divide by the number of at-bats. Longevity counts. Otherwise, retire Céspedes number now.
  8. d'Kong76 wrote: I'm gonna start a facebook page like that Hodge's nut has for Gil in the Hall for the Mets to retire Kranepool's #. Original Met, 18 years; what do they want, blood? That guy is a nut's nut. He went nuts on me and then I backed away slowly and quietly withdrew from the Facebook group, and he kept re-adding me unsolicited. He's so unstable and out there and un-self-aware about it, I almost kind of like him, but I tend to think he's hurting the Hodges case more than helping it.
  9. I think Jim Duquette sort of had Pomeranz at the top of the Mets' shopping list.
  10. There's a post that needs a drug test. Ceetar wrote: Frayed Knot wrote: I suspect he's mostly saying things that he thinks sound good at the time. Indeed. And dropping "Had sex in the clubhouse while games were going on" quotes is not exactly the way you endear yourself to the Mets organization. Or the ministry.
  11. Franco. I would agree there isn't much there there. Other 1986 Mets have made similar complaints, but they seem to have been equally nebulous (or, when specific) misguided. I think there's a fan cause celebre that has long argued that 1986 Mets aren't respected enough and somehow the organization hasn't held them in high enough esteem, and they've put a bug or two in some of the players ears, so they voice it too. But under the light of day, the complaints often don't have all that much substance — and turn out to be just a thing to say in order to stay relevant for a few moments — which is too bad because an open and real conversation about how the Mets honor and engage with their past would be a great thing. I perversely like that our site has become so marginalized that The Yellow Hammer can drop the lede for an exclusive scoop and be confident that no outlet will find it and run with it.
  12. Makes sense, as Gooden has looked mostly good the last few years, but certainly looked unhealthy at the reunion parade.

  14. Centerfield wrote: I can't imagine why they need to know which league will host the first 2 games months in advance if the team itself isn't determined until a few days before, but whatever. I imagine they start putting down deposits for hotels around September 1 for all teams that are still in contention and then start withdrawing them as the possibilities get whittled down. Centerfield wrote: I think letting it determine home field is dumb. They should just say the winning team gets to bang the wives of the losers. And you're against posting innocent pictures of prom dates and their cats.
  15. Last year's SHaMs were a .589 team, vs. .529 for the FHaMs. I can predict no less.
  16. I wish I could say he was trending well, but the OPS against splits are pretty damning: April: .292 / .350 / .575 // .925 May: .267 / .333 / .467 // .800 June: .314 / .375 / .533 // .908 July: .372 / .413 / .488 // .901 What else you got?
  17. If we do Baseball WeekTM, we can have three games. If we have three games, we can get everybody in and give them meaningful time without an impossibly dizzy parade of changes. If we can get everybody in and give them meaningful time without an impossibly dizzy parade of changes, we can continue to have every team represented without farce. Every offensive player would start at least one game. Three worthy starting pitchers would get to start for each league, instead of one. Starters would go around five innings instead of two. Offensive and defensive substitutions would otherwise occur only as the game dictates. If we can continue to have every team represented without farce, the games will be both competitive and fun. If the games are both competitive and fun, the profile and quality of the All Star [crossout]Game[/crossout] Series will be raised and the World Series link won't be absurd. Bonuses Injured and hurt players will have time to heal. Healthy players, even All Stars, will get some R&R with their families If the league elected, three teams (possibly within a train ride of each other) would host each year, instead of one), keeping a fan base from having to wait 30 or more years for an All Star Game. Fans can build mid-season travel plans around either the break in the schedule or, alternatively, a full week of baseball pilgrimages. Fans of even (or especially) the worst teams would enjoy the emotional reset of a second opening day. Teams would enjoy the big gate and the big publicity of a second opening day. Days taken from the schedule would be made up for by the return of a handful of Sunday double-headers. And that's all without mentioning all the other cool stuff going on during Baseball Week that a cleared schedule will focus more light on. Charity events The Hall of Fame Game The Hall of Fame Inductions The Civil Rights Game Cracker Jack Old Timers Game The Stupid Draft The Futures Game Expanded Skillz Competitions Rock 'n' Jock, hell yeah
  18. The problem is that all that depth at second isn't getting us the production we need as of yet, but I like it, and it certainly looks better if Reyes and Flores return from the break as hot as they went into it. The funny thing would be that Walker being in the final year of his contract was part of the reason the deal worked the first time, and it may be part of the reason the deal works going back. Part of the value is lost though. Part of what Mets were getting with Walker was a compensation pick when he walked. If he were to go back to the Buccos, nobody would get that pick. Also, the ratio of contract time remaining when the last deal occurred was 2:1 — 12 months of Niese for six of Walker. Now, it's more like 3:1 — nine months of Niese for three of Walker. Which isn't to say it couldn't be done, but it might be a little more complicated. Mets and Bucs seemingly love to deal.
  19. Your starting rotation sequence to begin the second half. Colon, Verrett, and deGrom go up against the Phillies on the road to begin, followed by Matz, Syndergaard, and a return to Colon against the Cubs at Wrigley. Wheeler's a mystery and Rafael Montero just got demoted to Binghamton following a staggering 10-run outing (the culmination of two months of ineffectiveness), so if Verrett can't hold that spot down, look for Sean Gilmartin or Gabriel Ynoa.
  20. Wiulmer Becerra may be making the strongest Mets beard statement since Angel Pagan. Rosario may be making the weakest one since José Reyes. His beard makes him look a dozen years older than he is, and not in a good way.
  21. And adding fourth-rounder Michael Paez makes this draft look pretty successful. The closest thing to a lost opportunity looks like our ambidextrous 20th-rounder Carlos Cortes. Paez debuted at short with Brooklyn tonight and went 2-4 with a walk. Move over, Colby Woodmansee! 22. One of only three Doc Ellis Mets wins in captivity. I hope somebody asked Tommy Lasorda what his opinion was on that first inning.
  23. Catching up with St. Loo, a lot of comings and goings leave them fishing to rediscover their identity. David Thompson hasn't yet found the magic he had working in the South Atlantic League. Not so much as Amed Rosario has carried his production on after jetting off to Binghamton, certainly. Wiulmer Becerra still searches for his power stroke, though otherwise hitting fine. The offense is really leaning on Kevin Taylor. The pitching is something else. Limping through much of the season with four starters on the DL, they've mostly been able to carry on. P.J. Conlon has certainly picked up where he left off in Columbia. And Ricky Knapp is walking around with seven wins and flirting with a sub-2.00 ERA. The team has won six of their last 10, having finished in second place, 2.5 games out, in the first half of the season, they now sit in third place, 2.0 games off the pace in the second half. Becerra, catcher Thomas Nido (Mets catchers are hitting at every level this season), and Amed Rosario represented the team in the FSL All-Star Game. Nido got one of only four hits for the North squad in their 1-0 loss. The team aided Orland relief efforts in the wake of the devastating shooting last month, hosting a unity circle and sponsoring a blood drive. Sock it to 'em Wiulmer!
