Reyes popping up on the first pitch. Drag that bunt, man. -
So the other day, the Mets had the night off, and I check the system scores the next day, and it reads like this: LAS VEGAS 4, OMAHA 2 Yay, we rule. Great pitching! BINGHAMTON 4, PORTLAND 0 Two for two, and our pitching is UNSTOPPABLE! ST. LUCIE 3, LAKELAND 1 Really, how can you be a batsman and not feel sorrow going up against a Mets affiliate? COLUMBIA 6, HAGERSTOWN 1 FOOLS! Trying to out-hit the Mets! Or the Fireflies! Whatever! BROOKLYN 3, ABERDEEN 2 That's five games. Five wins. Five outstanding pitching performances. I'm on top of the world. What could possibly go wrong? ELIZABETHTON 17, KINGSPORT 3 Well, that's just ... WHAT. THE. FUCK?! Really, guys, can you get with the program?! Way to kill a totally good buzz. I wanted to blame the defense. You know, Appalachian League. They probably kicked the ball all over the ballpark. But I read the box score (because I hate myself, and there were no errors, and only one unearned run. The pitching was just atrocious. They walked nine dudes and gave up 19 hits. And because it's still more or less early in the short season, that one game is bloating everybody's ERAS. God thing they called off the bottom of the ninth, guys! Jerks. GULF COAST METS RAINED OUT Whatever. The Kingsport game killed my buzz anyway. So that's what you got with Kingsport. Questionable pitching. And in the last week, bullpen fixtures Max Wotell and Chris Viall have joined the rotation, along with recent promotee Six-Toe Torres, who hasn't appeared yet. The main exception was Thomas Szapucki, but he's been sent to Brooklyn, you know, to join a real team. Ronald Guedez has been the best bull penner, and he's joined now by Darwin Ramos, who had been doing OK as a starter. What they got going offensively are great on-base percentages. They're reaching at a .343 percentage as a team, which is more-or-less leadoff quality. They have three catchers, reaching at Bondsian rates of .426, .406, and .417 respectively. While the team is tied for fourth (and tied for last) in the Appalachian League West Division, it's on-basiness like that keeps them within 3.5 games of the division leader. High stakes pitching matchup. I think we need some Jos Reyes activity today. -
Yeah, Bradford's was certainly called a sinker. He was the man. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/16/sports/baseball/the-pitch-from-down-under.html?_r=0 I tend to categorize Jeurys' pitch as a splitter. Or is this two different pitches we're speaking of?
-
Splitters and cutters deserve their own thread, I think. Scroogies too, even if there's been only a handful of guys who dealt it.
-
Everybody welcome Jared Diamond briefly back to the Mets side of the fence with a cool feature about the turn-of-the-century Mets brain trust recalling their initial pursuit of Ichiro. The weird part is everybody recalls that Bobby Valentine was a raving advocate for the guy, but then comes this bit o' weaseling: Phillips added that while Valentine did push for Suzuki, “even he just wasn’t sure.” Nobody's sure of anything in scouting, but by my memory and clearly everybody else's, Valentine couldn't have put more chips on the table. Good job by Diamante of rounding Phillips, Valentine, and Duquette up and getting them on record, but strangely nothing from anybody named Wilpon.

Great to start off the weekend gaining on both the Jingoists and Istiophoridae. Flores going 0-3 in his trips to the plate (though with a walk) and Loney hitting the difference-making homer really puts a crimp in the Mets-hate-Flores-Start-Him-over-Loney-Fulltime Movement. -

Cspedes is out there in the outfield in the ninth why? OE: I guess De Aza is the natural sub and he's been burned. And DOWN goes Stanton. -
Marty Noble told me about that game: http://www.mbtn.net/?p=855 We came in to the clubhouse afterward and Wally was there and said, “Come here, write this down.” And he motherfucked George Foster for an hour! "That motherfucker wouldn’t fight. Danny Heep was out there fighting in his underwear, and George is on the bench. Fuck him. Write it! And say I said it!" And I did. I've never been able to picture John Milner without his mothy old bathrobe since reading that interview. I also still want to pin down Strawberry on whether Kelvin Chapman was a better basketball player than him.

Got to say, opening with Mrs. Trump was not a good omen. -
Garrison Bryant, 36th rounder out of Clearwater (FL) HS has signed with the Mets after getting assurances from Sandy Alderson that the team will continue run the pro-set offense.
-
"Koosman could throw his curve any time." — J.C. Martin His had some lateral break — more 11-to-5 than Gooden's and Ryan's straight north-to-south drop.
-
The slider was Seaver's other killer pitch, so much so that he named his dog Slider. Writer and longtime Seaver friend and chronicler Pat Jordan would tease him that if he had another dog name Curveball, he'd have won another 100 games.
-
Juan Berenguer was the second Met, after Nolie, to hit 100. All sorts of badly edited craziness in this video. Jump ahead to about 2:00 and it gets real crazy. [youtube:3pf8oooy]rd0-1PMFfEY[/youtube:3pf8oooy]
-
This certainly doesn't look like something pleasant is coming.
-
And Ryan's was Gooden's predecessor. I loved Neil Allen's tight, hard curveball.
-
Billy Wags. Still throwing 99 when he got to Flushing, but folks kept fouling it back.
-
When Chad Bradford was on his game, and a right-hander was coming up, I was tempted to just write 5-3 on the scorecard before the first pitch. Against lefties was another matter.
-
Santana's I think was a palm change. Pedro's too, I think, though he probably mixed in the circle change as well. Glavine threw about the straightest straight change I remember. He threw nothing but the change and the fastball. And despite the change being dead straight and the the fastball not being that much faster than a change itself, it mostly worked.
-
Sinkers and splitters in the same category? As for sinkers only, Doug Sisk. Gave us two homers in 182 innings between 1983 and 1984
-
He gets a World Series ring. He stays modest; he don't boast. [youtube:3k4xbqwd]-aZHPuss9jo[/youtube:3k4xbqwd]
