  1. The real question is why I'm blacked out on the internet because I live in Baltimore, which is an hour outside of DC, but in a different media market, even though it's a damned national broadcast.
  2. Both equipos score on a walk, single, and a sacrifice fly.
  3. I imagine his position would be that it's been hot in part because of the benevolent situations he's been inseinserting it in, but yeah.
  4. Except by Rich Becker.
  5. Almost no new news on the draft front. Thirtieth rounder Eric Villanueva joined the team, and immediately had about as bad a debut as you can have. Coming on the sixth for the lowly Gulf Coast Mets against their Marlin opponents back on June 28, Villanueva walked his first guy; fielded a grounder off the bat of the second hitter, before committing a throwing error; walked the third guy to load the bases, and then hit the fourth guy. He was then relieved by Enmanuel Berihuete, but all four runners he gave up scored. Although only one run was earned, Villanueva has to wake up every morning with an infinite ERA. This was back on June 28, and the Mets haven't run the guy out there since. It's starting to get disquieting that second pick from the first round Anthony Kay isn't signed yet. There were reports as recently as July 8 that second-rounder Pete Alonso wasn't signed, but I think that's panicky fanbois, because we had him in the fold before that, and he's currently listed on the Brooklyn roster, but hasn't yet debuted. But Ward Melville's Kay, and the lack of activity on the back end, that's where the fretting should be directed. It'd be a shame to lose out on 20th-rounder Carlos Cortes, as he's got a little bit of Mazzilli in him. An ambidextrous thrower, Cortes throws left-handed when playing the outfield and right-handed when playing the infield. But he remains vocally committed to honoring his college scholarship. I mean, that's what they ALL say, as it's the only leverage they've got, but he seems serious about this stupid education thing. 6. One of the original names considered for the Mets was "The Avengers." And like the Avengers, they've won without Thor before, and will win without Thor again. [youtube:wx1rjywq]RGgRipOH0nY[/youtube:wx1rjywq]
  7. I'm guessing de Aza ain't going just yet, not that I don't doubt Bernadina has as much of a chance of having a good second half as he does. The other thing is that, with Nimmo ensconced on the roster, de Aza's centerfieldiness isn't as needful a thing to have around. But he's probably here at least until the Mets sort out the issue with Cspedes calf.
  8. I think that's Terry's saving grace with me. He's ready to get back up and do it tomorrow, and he has his team ready, while I'm still living last night's game thinking all was lost.
  9. Trea Turner may be the Dilson Herrera of the International League but I kind of like how those transactions play out for the Mets, if only that the Nats have to stumble through changing horses mid-stream. Speed better? Sure, much. But hopefully Taylor's defense is less informed by his speed and more reflective of the worst error ever — so a play so insanely bad it almost singlehandedly got him demoted. Reminiscent of Bobby Meacham getting sent down to AA for a base running blunder.
  10. Whiffing Murff twice is impressive. As it would also be satisfying to chase Strasburg. I'm just a little fretty the team doesn't have enough horses out there to stage this comeback. Wilmer Flores, be with me in my time of need.
  11. Good call from Josh: "Separated by 1,026 draft picks, Lugo gets Rendon."
  12. De Aza gets another stay.
  13. MLB has your answers. Participant The oldest player to participate in an All-Star Game was Satchel Paige at 47 years, seven days (1953). The oldest non-pitcher in an All-Star Game was Pete Rose at 44 years, three months and two days (1985). Starter The oldest starting player in an All-Star Game was Barry Bonds at 42 years, 11 months, 17 days (2007). The youngest starting player in an All-Star Game was Al Kaline at 20 years, six months (1955). The oldest starting pitcher in an All-Star Game was Roger Clemens at 41 year, 11 months and 9 days (2004). The youngest starting pitcher in an All-Star Game was Dwight Gooden at 21 years, seven months and 30 days (1986). Winning Pitcher The oldest pitcher to win an All-Star Game was Nolan Ryan at 42 years, five months and 10 days (1989). Losing Pitcher The oldest pitcher to lose an All-Star Game was Roger Clemens at 41 year, 11 months and 9 days (2004). (OE: Getting raked before his home crowd, pitching to Mike Piazza, utterly ruining the moment — to the extent that such a manufactured moment could be ruined — later in the game when he was given the Commissioner's Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence.) Home Run The oldest player to hit a home run in an All-Star Game was Cal Ripken, Jr. at 40 years, 10 months and 16 days (2001). Hit The oldest player to get a hit in an All-Star Game was Carlton Fisk at 43 years, seven months and 13 days (1991). Bartolo, when he woke up this morning, was 43 years, 45 days old.
  14. It would turn the game into a farce if he got a chance to bat. DO IT, TERRY!
  15. The thing is, if this is really about abused spouses, there's a strong argument against the notion that folks who have an abuse history should be treated as beyond the pale as far as employees. It creates a huge conflict for a victim spouse in an abuse situation with regard to seeking help. [list:35uz2mbu][*:35uz2mbu]It can cut the victim off from financial support and benefits.[/*:m:35uz2mbu] [*:35uz2mbu]It can cut the victim's children off from support and benefits.[/*:m:35uz2mbu] [*:35uz2mbu]It consigns the perpetrator to the home for many more hours of the week, making the victim-spouse that much more vulnerable.[/*:m:35uz2mbu] [*:35uz2mbu]It deepens the perpetrator's animus toward the spouse and society.[/*:m:35uz2mbu] [*:35uz2mbu]It separates the perpetrator from counseling provided through employee assistance programs.[/*:m:35uz2mbu] [*:35uz2mbu]It lifts from perpetrator the challenge of having to put on his or her best face eight hours a day, which is meaningful practice in getting one's act together domestically.[/*:m:35uz2mbu][/list:u:35uz2mbu] All that said, even if there's a strong argument against making such persons unemployable, it gets weighed against whether you want to be one doing the employing — to be associated with whatever the person is, whether that makes you an enabler, or feel like one, or be seen as one, whether you can be seen as symbolically endorsing the person's past (and possibly future) behavior to the outside world. Whatever the answer is, if you buy it, you own it. So the Mets, going in with their eyes open, owe it to themselves and everybody to do what they can to bring out José's best going forward, because it will be nearly impossible to distance or absolve themselves from any future assaults. And I hope they discussed his employment with some of the players, because they have wives too. And who he is or is not touches the guys who play and dress with him and have his back.
  16. I don't root for the laundry, I feel confident in saying. Which is good, because some of the laundry has been ugly. I root for Jeff Wilpon. Love that guy.

  19. Wow. That's a florid lineup.
  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Eleven and oh? The Mets need to do something about that! Same thought shot through my head.
  21. I'm not sure that's really Mike Rizzo's fight to have. It's Dusty who should be riding Blue. Rizzo should be going after the administrators who made the call possible.
